Royal Ontario Golf Club
About
Royal Ontario Golf Club sprawls across gentle hillsides blanketed in mature trees and thick fescue. Formerly a stable, the course features large meadows and dense groves of trees that frame the fairways and greens. The layout has a more traditional, links design that features occasional water hazards, most notably on the par-5 ninth and 18th holes that share a large lake, but the tree-covered hills are the true challenge of the golf course. Although there are many difficult elements on this course, five sets of tees make it accessible for players of all skill levels. Royal Ontario Golf Club is often compared to the Masters Course at Lionhead Golf & Country Club.

Terrible Tee Blocks, 0 player management
As 3, made into 4, we let two solos pass, a double pass and caught up to a then several times.
The course should be able to spot these deficiencies and ask the slower players upfront to play faster or educate them on the game. (They were waiting for people to finish the hole to tee off and spending 5+ minutes looking for balls)
Entering the shop was a little weird, no explanation or direction on where the 1st hole was, where to get carts, etc.
TEE BLOCKS: the only thing that makes this course difficult is the fact you are swinging at 45 degrees due to how terribly uneven the tee block were… literally unplayable
Not to mention, no one on this course fixed divots or ball marks. Course and green was beat so bad that due to slow play we probably could of had been paid for how much maintenance we did
Good round of golf..... lots of walking
Somethings you can change, others you can't. No marshalls on the course from hole 5 onward. waiting on every shot was tough on a hot day. poor tee sheet management. played as a twosome, behind two other twosomes. Cart girl told us four groups up had a huge gap in front of them.
Course is challenging, though some holes i wasn't a fan of. hitting two 100 yard shots on a par four seems odd?? didn't like that hole.
Also note under things you can't change, it was cart path only as there was rain the night before. lots of walking though completely understandable. i will say compared to others, this course does not drain well. despite playing midday in very hot temp, there were puddles all afternoon on the fairways....
Amazing course great conditions
Everything was great, if anything the golf cart has a bell to signal pace of play, food at the turn etc.
a little bit loud bell.
It kept ringing that we were a home behind where we were right behind the group in front of us.
I guess in hindsight it’s a great tool to keep slow groups on pace.
So no big deal. For sure I will be coming back.
Need more Marshall's
Very slow round. Waiting on every hole. Staff was great, just wished saw Marshalls on the back nine.
Odd course layout. Scorecard doesn't match GPS. Plays much shorter than advertised... Shouldnt hit wedge/wedge on a par 4 that plays 200 yards and you cant go for... on another one not be able to hit anything longer than a 6 iron offthe tee with a short right hand approach to the green. Some very nice holes but just a few odd holes.
Amazing
This was the first time I have played Royal Ontario and won't be my last. Fromt check in you are treated like a member. The starter asked if we brought lots of golf balls due to how tight the course is and how much water was on each hole. The fairways were so nice and greens so pure. I almost aced the 11th hole landed behind the hole rolled back missed by an inch rolled to 3 ft.
No sand in bunker and sloped tee boxes
Title says it all. The bunkers are terrible. Lots of rocks and doesn’t look like they’ve filled or maintained them at all. Played from the blue deck and it was literally like teeing off on a slope on at least 7 tee boxes.
Can’t hit driver off the tee on a lot of the holes. Found. Myself hitting long irons or hybrid off the tee for most of the par 4s and even a par 5. Just not a course I would play again. Too many other courses with a better design
Tough course. Nice Layout.
Lots of narrow fairways with tree lines and thick fescue.
Price is a little steep for just walking.
A few picturesque holes to be sure.
Amazing Course
I Love this Royal Ontario Golf Course. This is a stunning, well maintained golf course with such variety on every hole. It demands different shots in the bag. The maintenance crew is the best in the biz. Course is always in top notch condition. You pay a little more to play here but it’s worth it. The course is carved beautifully into the surrounding forest. I highly recommend this course.
the day was perfect and so was my score, I had fun with my friends
The day we had was excellent had not been golfing in a while it was such a nice time with my friends and family a real treat ,
Silly layout
Royal Ontario takes great pride in being one of the highest slope ratings in Ontario. One would think that that would translate into a memorable course but instead it means a bunch of blind shots and quirky holes (225 par 4 90 degree dogleg). Definitely a course you need to play this course a couple of times to know how to play it.
Could use some TLC
The course has a nice layout , with many holes having tight landing areas off the tee. Easy to donate balls if you’re not accurate from the tee. Greens were both thick and also filled with unrepaired ball marks. Very frustrating to see a good layout not respected by the staff and players.
Thanks
Bad design that isn't worth it
I had expected a course with a "Royal" designation in its name to be a top notch place but, don't let the name fool you. I thought that it was a really badly designed track with a lot of water features that couple be presented better instead the overgrowth around all the ponds. If I was the owner of this course I would not be too proud of how this course has been taken care of. Its not the superintendents fault its just that the surrounding forest and bush has been allowed to grow over and consequently covers a lot of the natural features that this course has. Because of this overgrowth its not a particularly attractive course to play. A couple of suggestions I would have is to clean up the overgrowth along the ponds and other water features, divot the fairways better and take the large stones that can be found out of the bunkers. I expect a lot from a course with the Kaneff brand on it and this one definitely was a disappointment. Might be a while before I come play this track again?
In response to the Kaneff Golf comments on my past comments. This is just a deflection of blame when it comes to my comments about the course conditions. I'm sorry but, I'm not interested in coming back to play this track again because of what I commented on previously. I'm sure that the conservation authorities aren't that strict about the areas mentioned previously?
Many areas around the ponds are now protected areas by conservation authorities. Being able to cut and trim everything is not possible due to various enviro restrictions. Along with spraying chemicals to help with this are now heavily regulated.
We are on it each day, divots and ball marks. Thanks!
