Royal Ontario Golf Club
About
Royal Ontario Golf Club sprawls across gentle hillsides blanketed in mature trees and thick fescue. Formerly a stable, the course features large meadows and dense groves of trees that frame the fairways and greens. The layout has a more traditional, links design that features occasional water hazards, most notably on the par-5 ninth and 18th holes that share a large lake, but the tree-covered hills are the true challenge of the golf course. Although there are many difficult elements on this course, five sets of tees make it accessible for players of all skill levels. Royal Ontario Golf Club is often compared to the Masters Course at Lionhead Golf & Country Club.

Ball marks and divots everywhere
Not sure if it’s the caliber of golfer they attract or what the reason is but I have never seen so many unfixed ball marks on the green and unfilled divots in the fairway.
New this year...they are clearly in trouble financially because they didn’t bother to join the Golf Canada program, so you can’t actually enter your score for handicap purposes. I’ve been golfing in the GTA for 30+ years and have never encountered this. Won’t go back for that reason alone.
Spend $15 more and go down the road and play Piper’s Heath. Much better experience from start to finish.
You are not welcome
Some of the green Marshalls had very bad attitude as if questioning why we were there. Absolutely NOT friendly, nor helpful. For example, after the first nine holes on a very hot day, a green Marshall refused to let us (including my gest from overseas) to eat something and had a drink before starting the back nine. He did not even allow us to go to buy a beer or water to carry to the back nine. When a lady eventually showed up at the 6 hole selling refreshment. We purchased couple of beer and two cold towels. One of the towels was very dirty and smelly, and another one was smelly. The lady refused our request to exchange a clean towel for guest. What kind of services was that. A total Disappointment!
Tough feedback, thank you. We are talking to all our Marshals that work at the golf course and giving them your feedback.
COURSE IS NOT RATED, so you cannot post a score to Golf Canada
Golf Now shows this course as rated, Well, they didn't pay their subscription to Golf Ontario, so they are no longer rated and anyone with a handicap CANNOT POST THEIR SCORE
GolfNow should remove the following 'rating/slope' information, because it is no longer valid and is misleading to anyone who plays it based on this information, as it no longer shows as a course in Golf Canada or USGA listings.
Tee Par Length Rating Slope
Black 72 7074 yards 75 146
Gold 72 6785 yards 73.4 142
Blue 72 6385 yards 71.5 136
White 72 5958 yards 69.7 130
White (W) 72 5958 yards 74.7 137
Red (W) 72 5225 yards 70.8 124
Thanks for the feedback. Our course will always have ratings (par and slope) whether we have joined Golf Canada or not. We joined many courses across Canada and did not pay our membership. The golf industry is extremely challenged right now with increased costs, over supply and less golfers. As a public facility we made a decision not to join as an effort to keep people employed and maintain cost feasibility.
Tournament Layout
Superb golf course! Back Tee's play longer than the yardage. You must hit fairways here or you have no chance of playing well. All Par 3's are challenging. Awesome layout! Par 4's offer some birdie opportunities and a good mix of short target tee shot's and some require a 280-300 yard drive from the tips. Course conditions superb! Greens are comfortable speed and consistent. Got a $60 w cart hotdeal on golfnow. The course is worth $100. Highly recommended!
Great feedback, thanks!
Royal Treatment at Royal Ontario
Arrived for our 10:40am tee off about 15 minutes early. Had a great chat with the starter who was an Olympic Medalist and Rose Bowl Champ!
Teed off and it was like our private course. Group ahead kept a great pace and nobody behind us in view. It was hot so that kept the fair weather golfers away I guess. Great cart service, course was is top shape, my wife and I played 18 with carts in 3hours 40 and I shot 92; awesome day!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks!!
Great Early Season Round
Royal Ontario is a great course, well manicured and very challenging, but fair. It is a course you need to play more than once unless you have a pro guide book or range finder with slope rating (there are just too many holes that play a club longer or shorter than one would think). Even with very little wind, this is a challenging, but fun layout.
We agree with you! Thanks!
4 Stars
Course is great. It is kept in pretty good condition. Staff is friendly and helpful. Only complaint is that it gets overbooked and usually takes me 5 hours to play a round in the summers.
Quick round by normal standards
This was a 4 hour round, things kept moving along.
The greens were 'tined' and a lot of sand was on the green and not in the tined holes
Admittedly, the course did call to advise of the tining prior to going to the course
I wish they would learn a lesson from Scotland and Ireland, there they do one half of the green one week, placing the flag on the side not tined, then the following week, they do the other side, thereby allowing play to continue with enjoyment.
Greens were in terrible conditions
Found a hot deal on golf now for Royal Ontario on Oct 12. We were told at the clubhouse that 9 of the holes were being aerated. 16 of the holes ended up being aerated and about 5 or 6 being totally unplayable with a layer of sand covering the green. It would have been nice knowing what the conditions were before booking, otherwise we would have not played here.
Royal Ontario, harder than I remembered
Course was in excellent shape. There was some waiting at every hole. Pace was about 4:40, so it should have been half an hour faster. Greens were fast and undulating and some pin placements quite unfair, although most were ok. Course was very tight in spots. Overall, a very nice track...
Great track
This is a great course and will test good golfers. The greens are in great shape and lots of undulations make them tough to read.
Nice Course
We enjoyed the course quite a bit. There were several holes that you could not hit the driver on as you would run out of fairway or by design you need to hit a lesser club. Lots of blind landing areas from the tee which is not ideal.
The marshal was annoying to say the least as he was on us for a good portion of the front nine even though there was no one behind us or on the tee. Totally inappropriate if you pay $250 plus for threesome with tax and you get bothered for no reason.
I certainly won't play this course again because of the marshal system.
Play once or twice a year
Challenging course with not too many easy holes. 9 and 18 are their signature holes and making par on either requires a careful approach. 7 is an easy drive with a approach into a narrow green virtually surrounded by water/hazards except for one side. The on course service is good as well and staff are friendly. Prices seem to have come down so you are getting good value for your money.
Thanks for the feedback. It is a challenge in todays golf world to educate the golfers in fixing ball marks and divots. One of the reasons we did not join Golf Canada. We have joined over 1 thousand courses across Canada who have not joined Golf Canada in hopes they will listen to public golf courses not just the private courses
