Lions Municipal Golf Course
About
Lions upstaged the prestigious sand-greened Austin Country Club when it opened with Bermuda greens in 1923, and has been Austin’s most beloved municipal ever since. Although no one knows for sure who officially designed this short, 6,000-yard classic, it appears that many members of Austin’s golf scene were involved, including Harvey and Tom Penick, and perhaps even the legendary John Bredemus. Either way, the design is famously unique, jammed into an unusually small piece of oak and cedar-covered terrain north of Town Lake. The track features loads of trees, even more doglegs, and some subtleties that have stood the test of time.
Lions’ colorful history is part of what attracts the 100,000-some-odd folks that cram the course every year. Ben Hogan teamed with Harvey Penick here in the 1950s for an exhibition match. He put on a show by stumbling around the first hole as if he’d spent the previous night partaking of drink, only to straighten it out and light up the course, much to the delight of the patrons. The story involves Lion’s No. 16 signature hole, which was No. 7 back then. Hogan was apparently a bit intimidated by the view from the tee. His question “Where’s the fairway?” has been asked many times over the years as hacks prepare to negotiate the blind tee shot on this 381-yard par 4. And while the hole isn’t as difficult today as it was back then, the approach is still testy over the water into a sloping, elevated green.
Getting there : From Mopac south, take the Enfield exit and turn right. Drive up the hill and make a left when you see the entrance to the course.

If you want life on the outside to pass you by...
We were a foursome behind another foursome and we waited on each teebox for five minutes or more on each hole. The groups behind us started to quit. What is it with Austin golfers not letting faster groups play through?
Other than that, the course is in OK shape. Worth about $12-$16/round. Anything too much above that and I would consider playing elsewhere.
Staff is OK. No real complaints.
The course is fun--just wish it were in better shape and played faster.
The range is sad. The range balls are sad. It mad me sad.
Where's the grass?
Thin lies all day. Fairways were barely grass. Green's were pretty good. We've had lots of rain. I thought fairways would be lush.
The course greens were very nice.
There was people walking in front of us that were a little slower than I expected but over all it was great golf. I would recommend it to anyone that has not played it this course.
Great Fun, Great Value
Paid very low fee for play on a course that was in very good condition. Balls rolled so true on the green. Played 18 holes in 3.5 hours.
Really enjoyed the play.
Winter Round at Lions
I have played Lions many time and reviewed it as much. The course is just like any other muni in Austin. Overall the condition was good. Greens rolled well and tee boxes were good. Like any course in the winter, the ground is hard to its tough to drive down on the ball from the fairway.
Tip: Putt from off the green. I tried to pick chips clean and duffed a couple. I ended up putting everything 10 ft off the green and it worked. Went from 12 over on the front to 3 over on the back by just doing this.
HardPan
They did not overseed anything and the fairways were almost 100% hardpan. My playing partner told me that Austin did not overseed the Austin public courses. Already (mid-December) the fairway Bermuda has been knocked flat and you need to pick the ball off the fairway dirt (or mud, in some places). A very pretty day it was, but the course condition was so poor I won't go back until next summer. We played behind a 4-some of guys in their 30's-40's. Three of them were near-beginners, and they were playing from the tips - hitting MANY strokes on every hole. Further, they played honors golf waiting on each other all the time, plumb-bobbing on every putt, and they were almost never ready to hit when it was their turn. The Marshall drove by at least 2 times but never said a word to them. No players were ahead of them. They offered to let us play thru at the turn, but we didn't because we needed something from the snack shop. We should have played thru. As a result, the pace of play was so slow that we wound up driving home in Austin's rush hour.
Challenging, friendly, professional
Crs has narrow & wide greens for complexity, this is good. The greens were in good shape. Indoor toilet facilities can be attened more often for cleanliness & flushing. Staff is kind & friendly. Very inviting course. I enjoyed the experince. Thank you.
Fun Course
Lions is an Austin Gem. Fun course right outside of town. It was in its average condition last Sunday. Overall it was green and soft. My only complaint were the greens. They were a little hair and spongy. Hard to have a true roll.
Practice
It's a basic municipal course. Not a particularly challenging layout and conditions were okay at best. Had to rent clubs and they were terrible. Staff seemed harried but pleasant. Pace of play was a little slow. Not sure I'd go back.
Muny, Save it!
The greens are back to normal. They would be perfect if anyone would ever fix a ball Mark. Obviously the layout is great my favourite thing about this golf course is that there is not one single house anywhere. If you're new in town or just visiting, this one is a must play. Oh and please sign the petition let's keep this place a golf course. SAVE MUNY
A decent mid range course, for the local golfer
I have played a few times over the years, sometimes the pace of play can be slow, but yesterday we finished in 4hrs. The staff was very friendly, course was in decent shape. I felt we had good value, at $25.
Historic Lions
The course needs work. Greens were very fuzzy and not consistent from green to green. Lots of hard spots. But this course is an Austin staple and will continue to play here. :)
SLOW
Overseeded and sanded greens 2 days before. They failed to let this be known. Layout short but fun. Greens always slow. Play always slow. Play Kizer.
Average Muni
Lions is always a good time. Overall course was in good shape. Only downside were the greens. Little hair at time and had to hit it firm. Other than that it was green and lush.
Lions Muni ROCKED!
This course presented excellent opportunities to have a good score but also provided challenges to try your luck with some risky tee shots! Cutting corners over the trees is possible and the greens were in pretty good shape. Rains the day before made for good GIR from 180+ yards.
Excellent value!!!
Great for public course!
Well maintained course with a friendly staff. I will definitely play there again.
Not to happy
This is a ok layout with small greens. I hit a nice iron shot on number 6 in the fairway so I pull my 5 iron out to hit into to the green hit a rock with my 5 iron took a a chunk out of my club. I was in the fairway brand new clubs so after that I just pack up my clubs and left. I will not play this course never again.
Classic Old Muny is in Great Shape Right Now...
I've played Lions too many times to count thru the years, but I've never seen it in this great shape. Guess the record rainfall in May really helped. Get out and play it now before the 100 degrees July/August Texas heat bakes it into a parking lot. Will miss Old Muny when UT takes back the land in 2019, will be a true shame. Hope somehow my alma mater comes to its senses and continues to lease the land to the City of Austin. Come on Longhorn Nation, we have enough money, don't need to destroy this gem in the middle of Austin. Just great playing a classic old course where Kite and Crenshaw cut their teeth and legends like Hogan, Nelson, Trevino and Demaret are rumored to have also walked. We know Hogan for sure (hole #16). Lions isn't long, but definitely narrow in some places, but many birdie holes (#2, #4, #8, #9, #10 #11, #12, #14, #15, #18)...but also many holes that will eat your lunch and put a double bogey on your card to ruin your round (#2, #5, #6, #8, #12, #16!!!). Go out and enjoy Lions while you still can, especially on a weekday when you can play it in under 4hours (sadly, I stay away from Lions on the weekends as 6 hour rounds are common).
Enjoyable Golf
The Greens were bumpy and needed to be topped with sand again. It appears that the recent rains caused this issue!
