Nice course
I bought two t-times from Tee-Off for 12:10 p.m. on a great weather day. It started raining and we had to stop and ask for a raincheck. The pro shop would not give us a raincheck and instead asked us to call Tee-Off and get them to refund our money since I had paid my fees to them. When I called Tee-Off, they refunded most of the money. Other than this hassle, it was a good start to a fair ending. The course was wet with cart path only. I'd play it again.
Really good municipal course
Outstanding value for a municipal course. Good design and nice layout. Really good course conditions. Friendly and helpful staff. Good driving range. Great burgers. Exceptional pace of play for a muni on a Thursday afternoon : under 4 hours for a 4-some (with one walking) and a very s-l-o-w group of players in front of us who were playing from the blue tees when they were barely suited for the forward tees. Big bonus features rarely, if ever, seen on a municipal course: starters and course marshals who actually monitored—and good steps to enforce—tee time assignments and pace of play on the course.
Back again
This is the 2nd year in a row that we had the pleasure of playing there. The course was in great shape considering how hot and dry it has been. The traps and greens were in very good shape. The course is well maintained. The staff both inside and outside were friendly and helpful. Already looking forward to next years visit.
Great Pace
Played as a twosome and started just before noon and finished at about 3:20p so the pace was excellent. Very hot, about 107 when we finished. The course was in pretty good shape considering the heat over the last couple of months. Greens and fairways in pretty good condition. Off the fairways quite dry. Plenty of cold water out on the course. Take a couple of water bottles to fill as you go so you don't run out. Overall, very good day.
Nice Course
Well the title speaks for the course! Nice layout, greens were in very good and tricky but fair. Will be back again! Good staff and area to eat.
Great Course for a Day of Fun
Jimmy Clay appears to be really nice course. Fairways were in nice shape. As were most greens. This course gets a lot of traffic, but still looks great. Real variety from one hole to the next.
Best course condition ever
I played this course 15yrs ago and has improved condition-wise night & day
Loved the c the 3some on the front 9 were great, they left I played with s 2some awesome, the greens were not very good Kizer were better but overall I enjoyed myself will play again
Overall impression and/or issues -- it's just not a good time to play this course. Out of the GolfATX city owned courses in Austin, we rarely come back to this course. It's simply been a broken record +/- for a decade or so. It was designed long ago and would take PGA money in order to rebuild it to desired playing standards.
Speaking of money, did I see any water jugs on the course today? I don't recall any. Maybe they're there ... or maybe they've indefinitely succumbed to COVID-19 (when they were first removed from the GolfATX courses). Be prepared regardless.
The governors on the golf carts appear to be on the slower end of the spectrum. We thought our cart hadn't been charged properly and turned around on the first hole only to get the same limited speed out of the second cart. Ugh! I'd almost consider trying to adjust the nut on the rod/cable that controls the electric speed governor. It's not like Clay is a dangerous course with big hills, dangerous curves, etc. It's a tame/safe course.
With a handful of fairways stacked next to one another like bacon in a frying pan, there's often a bit of forgiveness when you miss the fairway. That'll help players who are perhaps higher handicaps and/or having an off day (like ... me!).
As for the actual course conditions, the winter months are never much fun on older muny type courses. All dried out grasses were cut short and left us hitting a lot more hardpan dirt. A number of tee boxes were more dirt than grass. I know this course gets a good amount of play and funds may be more scarce (vs private course), but some of the boxes were just ridiculous. The fairways were in decent shape generally speaking. They just had short, 'dead' winter grass. Don't expect decent divots if that's your style of play. The bunkers were all in good shape. Of course, we don't want nor plan to play from them so that's not really that helpful. Still, kudos for having plenty of good soft sand and rakes all around. The water hazards all seemed to be in pretty good shape. I only noticed that the one around the #6 green was on the low side. Luckily, that worked in my favor since my approach came just short enough to drop down into what would normally be water, but was instead dried dirt. The greens were alright. But they, too, were dry and hard. They certainly didn't hold a shot. None of us needed a repair tool today. I often hit a shorter shot into the green to compensate for the extra roll/bounce I was going to receive. I did see a few weeds and/or undesirable grasses creeping in here and there; it happens. They were rolling fairly decent ... a little on the quick side (which I certainly don't mind). I did see a few too many cut grass clump droppings that came from underneath the mowers. Not exactly sure how you prevent that ... or if you have to come behind with blowers to get them off. We simply had to move a number of them before putting; enough to make it noticeable.
See you in a few years Jimmy Clay ... maybe, maybe not.
Didn’t get to plat
I made a tee time for 4:30 and showed up after paying the booking fee. I get into the pro shop and was notified that they were closing in 30 minutes. This is after I drove all the way there - nobody had the decency to let me know ahead of time that they were closing.
Great course, horrible pace of play
It should be expected at any course renting out push carts, but the slow play here was worse than imaginable. Multiple groups of walkers and a mom and kids group holding up walkers and carts.
I’ve learned to expect this at all golfatx courses and will be avoiding them moving forward.
