Lions Municipal Golf Course
About
Lions upstaged the prestigious sand-greened Austin Country Club when it opened with Bermuda greens in 1923, and has been Austin’s most beloved municipal ever since. Although no one knows for sure who officially designed this short, 6,000-yard classic, it appears that many members of Austin’s golf scene were involved, including Harvey and Tom Penick, and perhaps even the legendary John Bredemus. Either way, the design is famously unique, jammed into an unusually small piece of oak and cedar-covered terrain north of Town Lake. The track features loads of trees, even more doglegs, and some subtleties that have stood the test of time.
Lions’ colorful history is part of what attracts the 100,000-some-odd folks that cram the course every year. Ben Hogan teamed with Harvey Penick here in the 1950s for an exhibition match. He put on a show by stumbling around the first hole as if he’d spent the previous night partaking of drink, only to straighten it out and light up the course, much to the delight of the patrons. The story involves Lion’s No. 16 signature hole, which was No. 7 back then. Hogan was apparently a bit intimidated by the view from the tee. His question “Where’s the fairway?” has been asked many times over the years as hacks prepare to negotiate the blind tee shot on this 381-yard par 4. And while the hole isn’t as difficult today as it was back then, the approach is still testy over the water into a sloping, elevated green.
Getting there : From Mopac south, take the Enfield exit and turn right. Drive up the hill and make a left when you see the entrance to the course.

Top 2 muni - greens in poor shape
I haven't played all the municipals in Austin but I consider Lions to be the 2nd best course after Mo' Willy. Tucked in a very ritzy area of town, Lions is a very nice course for being a muni. Good bang for your buck if you want to play in a well kept course. However there are two big negatives from our day: 1) greens seemed to have been aerated either the day before or very recently and the ball rolled horribly (very hoppy), 2) pace of play was poor, we had a super slooow five-some in front of us and they were walking (making the round pretty unpleasant). Nonetheless, I would definitely would want to return to Lions in a month or two after the greens smooth out and hopefully we don't play behind a walking 5-some this time around.
Not happy
I was very upset cause I was in the fairway hit my ball and took a chuck out of my club. Hit a rock in the fairway. Brand new golf clubs. The new Ben hogan club. So I quit after the ties hole. This is not a good place to play.
Lions GC
Course was in good condition. Greens were in excellent condition. Enjoyed playing the course. will recommend course to friends.
Beauty
Beautiful Day! Beautiful Course! Good conditions and good pace of play. Especially considering the price. $25 for the round. Great value!
good beginner course
driving range is garbage. have to hit off felt pads and can only use irons.
Muny as charming as ever
It's not even my favorite city course but there is a special place in mine and all local golfers' hearts when it comes to Muny. I tend to play Mo Willy more often, but when I do play Lions, I'm always reminded in its subtle charms. It's a course you have to play for a lifetime to really figure out. Depending on the wind and the firmness of the turf based on recent rains, the course can play entirely different since the last time you played. Golfers need to work the ball both ways in order to stay out of the trees. The greens are something else. Right now they are rolling very fast, and if you're above the hole, good luck.
Recently I've been thinking that Lions could very well be put on a level with San Antonio's Brackenridge Park if there could be some certainty and investment into the future of the course. The land is just so good, and the bones in the hole designs are there. I hope the University of Texas sees just how much of an asset to the community and to the history of the state that Muny provides. And when you consider that UT's home course is far west of town and not even accessible to students, why not take Muny over and make it the official course for students and faculty while also letting residents play it too? Seems to make perfect sense to me.
I could keep writing about Muny for another couple thousand words, but I'll wrap it up by saying that I'm only giving it three stars because of the untapped potential the place would have if it received the blessing of UT and could receive some needed investment into the grounds. It's special now, yes, but could really be a treasure.
CIty Course means PUBLIC Course and you know the PUBLIC part
It course is located in a nice area with lots of room for improvements! Lack of proper management, fairway, local amenities or lack of, not even be able to find a parking spot in the parking lot to get the task of the day started off wrong. No on-course discipline made the freezing delayed day a even more frustrating! Riding on this 18-hole rating 70 with slope of 114 took nearly 5hrs to completed, had no ranger to managing the playing pace on the course is an indication that all they care is to collect the green fee and you can live or die on your own.... I'll never come back to this place, not even for free...
Historic
Beautiful time warp. Old established landscaping. A rare treat for an Arizonan.
Awesome
The course is challenging for anyone. Rewarding for risk takers and forgiving for conservatives. Watch the greens because the will make you tri putt every time you hesitate!
Okay... not good, not bad
The course was in okay condition, the tee boxes and fairways were nice as usual however I've seen the greens in much better condition than they are at the moment as they are bumpy and slower than usual, also the sand traps could use some work. The pace of play was the main issue and was awful as I was playing solo and had a group of 3 older gentlemen walking the course 2 groups in front of me and a group of 3 older ladies new to the game directly in front of me that wouldn't let me play through. The course is acceptable for less than $30 but more than that I'd look elsewhere.
Fun layout, greens in poor condition
So many pitch marks and dead spots in these greens. Also they are very slow.
Good Morning Monday
It was nice to be able yo play with friendly people. Had nice round. I'm improving.
Golf tradition of Sustin
Great layout. Tee boxes need some work and greens were not very consistent. Being an older course, has great ambience
Great Muny
I really enjoyed this course. The front nine and back nine have completely different personalities. Do your scoring on the front, because the back is considerably tougher (although I, for some unknown reason, scored better on the back), with some long shots over water. The greens were a bit difficult for me to read...but that's nothing unusual.
Tight Tee boxes
Many Tee boxes are either close together or right on the cart way.
Also maintenance can be better. A few holes if your tee shot goes off the fairway, most likely you need to drop a new ball.
Nice
Course was well kept, great staff, great gameplaym
Monday Rate Special
I played Lyons on a Monday that I booked thru GN for $36.00. On Mondays Lyons runs a special for $25.00 all day tee times. So if your going to book a tee time on a Monday you should just book it with golf course.
Great Value
Convenient Location and great Muny course. I'll play Lions again.
Sunday at Lions Muny
Greens are questionable, perhaps due to all the rain we've been having, and indicate root system issues. Greens were running at about 6.5 - 7. Cloudy, rainy weather giving way to direct sunlight and warmer growing conditions should help.
We played on a Sunday. The course was packed and it took right at 5 hours to play.
Despite these issues, Muny has a quirky charm that makes it fun to play regardless.
Not bad
They punched the greens today. Overall course was decent. Not bad for price and a little bit of history.
