Fun day of golf
Set in the Caledon Hills northwest of Toronto, this was a very different kind of golf for me. Elevated tees, rolling fairways and undulating greens more than make up for no sand and very little water. Course knowledge certainly helps here as there are some blind shots. It is not unfair but is can be challenging, particularly from the tips. Autumn golf with fall colours is spectacular. I found the rough to be a little thick. The first and eighteenth had a little water damage both being the lowest holes on the course. Otherwise I really enjoyed my day at Hockley.
fun time
A challenging course with lots to see and enjoy. Definitely feel like your in the country.
The Resort in the North
What the most amazing feature of this course is how difficult it plays with the lack of bunkers and water hazards. The signature of this design is the change in elevations, and the greens so neatly tucked away. Certainly lost a few balls in the rough, as it is very thick but the fairways were clean. Would recommend the use of a cart otherwise expect to be "climbing" throughout the round. Par 5's were reasonably long but not impossible to hit in two, if you know where to aim. Par 3's were all on an elevated tee box, which can be deceiving when selecting the correct club. Pace of play was wonderful as we golfed on a Monday morning, but can see it being slower on a weekend due to volume. Resort amenities are wonderful with a full formal dining area and bar along with all standard resort offerings. Green fees are fair and if using a golfnow.com tee time will increase the value for dollar tremendously. In closing, I would certainly recommend Hockley Valley, especially for someone looking for a "different" style of course.
Hockley
Both greens and tee decks in rough shape. The course design provides a great challenge.
Really Goofy Layout
Course staff was very nice but the course itself certainly was not. Way too many local course nuances with way too many blind shots into almost inaccessible greens. If you hit the ball more than 200 yds off the tee, this is not a course for you.
Fun to play
Great condition, greens top notch, beautiful vistas. Not many courses around like this one, has a very unique feel and look. If in Ontario it should be on your must play list.
A good day of golf is better than a good day of work!!
It is still the toughest course I've play. I love it. A nice touch at end of round is when an employee wipes the crud of your clubs. I'm impressed! Thanks for a great round!
Pace of play
It Is a well known issue at this course. They have tried to address it by posting tips to improve pace of play in each of their golf carts. However, they don't enforce it. We expressed our frustration with the slow pace of play and pointed out to the Marshall that the twosome in front of us perhaps should move up a tee box. We observed this twosome rarely making the fairway from the second to back tees. He informed us that we were playing at the suggested pace, (acceptable pace of play they base on a foursome) After a lengthy discussion in which I suggested he observe them and kindly ask them to move forward a set of tees, he said would but when we got to the next tee (to wait once again) the Marshall was nowhere in sight so I do not believe he spoke to them.
Up and Down
Short but difficult track, no bunkers that I remember, but tight with lots of elevation changes. Fun course, pace of play slow but ok for a resort course.
Challenging off the tee
Very nice course, nice views and a good layout that would probably be enjoyed more on subsequent rounds. My only criticisms would be that just about every par 3 has really elevated tee blocks, which are tough to judge (at least for your first time). Also there are some holes that are somewhat blind off the tee with minimal help from the signage/card. There were quite a few lost balls off the tee for a group of mid handicap golfers.
Its a Challenge
Excellent layout, somewhat dry as we seem to be going through a drout so can't blame that on the course. Greens running med- fast. Narrow fairways with raised or lowered greens make it tough if your not on your game.
Hockey valley
Course was dry. But still enjoyable
Excellent Day
My buddy and I had an excellent day at Hockley Valley beginning with the gentleman that set us up with our golf cart. Don't even ask about walking this course! The course has magnificent views throughout all 18 holes. Precision golfing is the name of the game at Hockley Valley.
Love the course, but strange decision by starter....?
I booked a threesome through Golfnow. We arrived at the course about 20 minutes before our tee time, and were told that there are no groups in front or behind so we could take our time warming up. Then, when we got to the first tee, the starter told us that he was pairing a single with us. I have no problem with being paired up, but it seemed strange that he would pair the single with us rather than sending him out alone on a fairly empty course. He also sent a twosome out behind us because "they showed up late." I would think it would be better to either send the twosome ahead of the foursome, or add the single to the twosome to make two threesomes so that we would keep the same pace.
When we get to the third tee, a marshall approaches and asks us why we have three carts (the starter told us it would be ok for the single to keep his own cart, and our third to stay in his own cart rather than amalgamating....) The marshall then says that he will send someone out to pick up the extra cart, but no one ever came...Whatever.
Overall, I love the course, and have had some awesome experiences there over the years. This day was a bit off, and our encounters with employees rubbed me the wrong way, but it won't prevent me from going back.
picturesque
very fun probably really quick greens in the hotter months
A must play in the GTA
My all time favourite venue in the GTA.This is the fifth time I have played this course for the season and certainly would not be the last. All the staff here are very professional and make u feel appreciated.
Course is in great shape. The greens have recently been aerated hence were rolling slower.Fairways in great shape .Play the right tees and u would have an
enjoyable round.Keep the ball on the fairway or pay the price. There are lots of uneven lies and elevation changes. The vistas are amazingly breathtaking. No sand bunkers but dont be fooled this course has its fair share of challenges.
Challenging Layout
Played the course for the first time in challenging weather conditions. The course, despite the rain, was in great shape. The changes in elevation were incredible and made the already challenging tract even more difficult. I was not sure on several occasion whether we would get up the hills safely or down the hills safely. This made for an interesting round. I would definitely play this course again and would recommend it to friends who are looking for a challenge.
challenging
Always enjoy this course. I like the challenge on some of the holes. You have to really place your shots and that is good.
