Rating 72.6

Set along the Rio Grande River, this is a scenic course with spectacular views. The front nine was built in 1987, and the back nine followed in 1992. The highlight of the course is what is perhaps the longest water hazard in Texas, the Rio Grande River, which flows along holes 5 through 13 on the left side of the fairway.

Narrow fairways and grass bunkers make the course tough, especially when the wind is howling, as it is tough to hit the small, firm greens. Water is everywhere. No. 14 is the only hole without water. The par 3 17th hole, with its island greens, headlines a series of demanding par 3 holes. The last hole plays 434 yards into the wind and has out-of-bounds on either side of the fairway.

Getting there : From Harlingen take Hwy. 77 south. When you come to Hwy. 802 turn right, then continue until you reach Hwy 281. Turn right again and drive approximately 2.5 miles to the course

On the border

Fun course. Good course for the Valley area. Greens were in good condition and enjoyed the round. It was fun playing right next to the Rio Grande River.

Layout is Interesting

Course winds in between retirement community. Can be little confusing for first time. Greens were in decent Mr shape. Fairways not so much. Pace of play slow. We had 3 guys jump in front of us on hole 10 and slowed really down.

Nice public course

We enjoyed our round at River Bend. It was our first time playing the course. The signage getting you from hole to hole was excellent.

My only complaint is that there are no yardage markers on the course making it difficult for a first timer unless you have a range finder (which I did not).

Overall the course is laid out well and enjoyable to play.

Don’t allow groups of 6

Course was really not very nice, but the worst thing was the group of 6 in front of us. That’s right, 6. We skipped past them after 3 holes. No idea why they didn’t wave us through. There was a marshall on the course and saw us (twosome) behind this group and didn’t say a word. I still wouldn’t recommend this course even without the group of 6 problem.

River Bend Resort

Upon arrival checked in with nice lady in pro shop, the pro shop doesn’t have much to offer. Went to driving range the tee area was lacking greatly for grass mostly dirt. The starter was a very nice person and we got started. The course was ok much like a muni course very average, we caught up with the group ahead of us in about three holes and things got very slow for the rest of the day on one par 5 on the back side there were four groups one on the green, one in the fairway ,one on the tee box, and one waiting. Finally saw a Marshall on 13 or 14 but not sure if anything changed. Overall it’s a course I would play again but it is a little over priced and if I had to drive more than 20-30 minutesi would look for something else.
