Worth the drive
This course has a good layout, several different teeing options and plays challenging on some holes with tighter fairways, trees, various bunkers, undulating greens and then some holes are wide open and you can really go for it and score. The course was in good shape, some of the greens need some repair work but overall they rolled well and if you spin the ball it will dance. The driving range was closed due to heavy rain but it appeared to be in excellent condition. Practice putting green mirror the actual greens maybe a bit faster as it did feel drier than the course greens. The short game area was decent with various shots possible including bunkers. The carts lack GPS so you will need a range finder on the course as the on course markings weren't very visible or accurate.
Hidden Gem
A must play..!!! The greens are as nice as the staff!! The only minor issue is on some of the tee boxes the grass hasn’t grown in completely other than that get that tee time, make that drive and enjoy yourself ..
Great staff
Course was in very good condition especially for the Texas heat.
Had some spots that were bare but nothing too bad.
Staff was very friendly and accommodating.
This is one of the finest maturing courses in our area.
I sort of wish I didn't write this review because now everyone will want to see what "a real golf course" looks and plays like. Bravo for the prodigious work the grounds crew accomplished saving the greens from the freeze that all Texas courses suffered from earlier this year. Someone here has a vision for where this course is headed. And frankly, it's too good for most of us, so remember to fill your divots and fix your ball marks!
The beverage cart was making the rounds often.
Unsatisfactory
If you have 6-7 spare hours on a Wednesday this is the course for you. No marshals, beverage person seen twice in 18 holes. Our cart was missing the cooler (apparently these get stolen a lot here???). We asked if we could have 1 from another cart (no).
On the 5th green the pro or heads greenkeeper was on the green telling us to hit into him. Not fun.
Too bad cause the course has a lot of potential. Played here over 10 times over 10 years.
Leave the putter...
Unfortunately this course is going through some major transition. We last played after the winter storm and it was in better shape. The greens are a snails pace with a lot of dead spots. I really love the challenge of this course but not for the price they are asking. I hope it gets back to normal because it’s truly a beautiful layout. Only tip you get is if your approaching a green on every hole go strong because the ball will stop on a dime. Hope it gets better sooner than later.
SOUTHERN OAKS Is making it's way back
Over the past 2 years this course has got better. Pace of play was great and flew through the Round. Price was good but the greens had just been punched and sanded so getting true roll on the greens was impossible. Wish Golf Now and the course.would.commicate when greens are punched. Once greens are ready again in a few weeks this course will.be back to top.shape.
I did all the homework......
Southern Oaks is a 108 mile round trip for me. I love the course - layout, fairness, pace of play. So before I made the trek to Burleson, I read the reviews, made sure weather would cooperate, even called the golf course. I did all the homework. The course reported 'no maintenance issues' on Monday. I arrive on Wednesday to beautiful blue skies, light winds....... and 300 tons of sand on the greens. The picture is a typical green today. Unplayable. I will give them props on the rest of the course - rough was high, fairways and tees level and soft, bunkers decent, but the greens made it hard to enjoy for a good player.
I know every course with Bermuda needs to aerate and sand. I just wish they would tell you when they do it rather than surprising you. Today, the long drive was not worth it. I will go back, but it's gonna take some time for that much sand to sink in. Disapponting.
Great course, greens were sad due to the Texas freeze.
The rest of the course was fantastic, but the greens were nothing but sand. It’s required obviously after aeration , but there was an inordinate amount which made putting not even worth trying.
Great course. Never anwser phone
I do love the course. And most the staff is friendly. But no joke ive called on several different occasions throughtout the years...and they NEVER anwser the phone. Not a huge deal most the time i guess since u can book online but id like someone to pick up if they got a phone.
A good test
I used a $20 Golf Now voucher on this course I've been wanting to play for a while. It helped to have a playing partner who'd played the course before.
Prior to the round, I watched the YouTube videos of flyovers for each hole, which I found helpful.
The combined tennis/pro shop was somewhat hard to find (it's on the way left of the parking lot near the tennis courts). There is ample space for the practice area, which consists of the driving range, practice putting green, & an area for practicing chipping/pitching/sand shots.
Further advice I received from my playing partner was NOT to miss the 2nd green long. The course is convenient--to the Burleson Airport!
