Very good course
I really enjoyed my round of golf, staff was really friendly, they met me at the parking lot with my cart. The condition is very good, everyone's greens around DFW are the same right now. Good course layout.
Front 9 is very poor
Terrible front 9. This is probably why they start you on hole 10. The back 9 is excellent, but the front 9 completely takes away from how good the overall course is.
Good layout, but needs a little more upkeep
It's a very fair layout. I liked almost all of the holes. The holes are mostly tree lined but there is room to miss and still find your ball on most misses. The greens are on the slow side but fairly smooth.
On the bad side there were two temporary greens on the front 9. I'm not sure how long it will take to get them playable.
That said I will be back even though it is a drive to get out there from FTW
Great staff, lots of variety in the course layout
A great day to play and this course is always a great choice. The staff very friendly, the course in great shape. There are two temporary greens on the front, but the rest is well maintained. The variety of the layout make this a fun course as you do not have hole after hole of par 4 repeat.
Go check this course out
I have been delaying playing this course, due to all the talk of the greens. Yes, there are currently 2 temp greens, and some blemished areas (not to interfere on 1 putts) on a few other greens. But, there is nothing to complain about at this facility!....great layout, tee boxes & fairways are great....staff is great. A top notch course open to general public!...give it a go.
Greens suck
This course has a great layout, but the greens are in really bad shape, with 3 temporary greens. I would give it a year to come back.
Very nice course...but
Very nice course, just picked day right after aeration, so greens not in good shape, will play again when in better shape. Not much water, bunkers everywhere, would be nice if it really was sand and not Texas clay mix. Moderate to hard.
Quick round on a SUN
Played in little less than 4 hrs.
$25 on GOLFNOW.
Fairways in great shape.
Greens had their issues (2 temp greens) but all Bermuda greens are struggling this year.
Staff top notch and friendly.
Greens are just not good enough
The greens are just in terrible condition. I know it was due to the harsh winter. The fairways are good. There's always a bunker or two full of sprinkler water which has always been an issue here
Dead greens
I hear the greens are getting better. Maybe next year. I will not go back before then
Greens
Tee box to green in fine shape. Greens were unacceptable for this fine layout. Disappointed, hopefully greens will be in better shape for prime season.
Course
Some of the fairways were great, the the tee boxes were poorly maintain, sand traps were very bad in worst, the greens. I've never played a round with greens this bad. You had 2 provisional greens that were poorly created. I can't believe you expect to have your Grand Opening with the greens n traps in this bad shape. I wasted a perfect day for a round of golf at this course.
Course conditions...
Past few years course conditions terrible. It appears a material effort is being brought to improving the conditions.
First timer
Enjoyed my1st time here and vwill be returning. Greeted by a very nice gentleman at the bag drop so I anticipated it being a good day. Some repairs ongoing but won't affect your play unless you hit an errant shot. Pace of place was very good. Slowed a little towards the end of our round but that tends to happen when a twosome follows a foursome. Carts in excellent shape. Facilities are in excellent shape as well. Looking forward to playing there again.
Needs work. I can tell they are trying to make it better.
Next spring it should be in great shape. I will return before the end of the year to see how it is progressing.
Getting better
Southern oaks is showing some real potential the course condition is getting better and better. It shows that someone is actually caring! I can't wait to see what it looks like in about a month. Worth the round and trip. A nice challenge from the tips.
Wait until they fix this course
I was looking for a place to play early AM and booked Southern Oaks. I knew that it would be cold and windy, having just played a private club in Ft. Worth the day before. The weather was not good, but the condition of Southern Oaks left much to be desired. In fact, we stopped and walked off the course after just eight holes as the lack of grass on the fairways, numerous GUR spots and greens under repair made it a pointless exercise in futility.
It appears that they have been putting some money into the course, and based on other reviews, the owners are trying to improve. I should have listened to the reviews rather than my friend who told me that Southern Oaks was a good bet. It was not a bad track, but I would not play there again for at least a few years to see if the changes take place and they can whip it into shape. At the price paid ($95 for two players), it was not a bargain at all.
One last note: the dirt bike races going on all morning adjacent to the course made for a constant source of annoyance. Not very conducive to concentration.
Not in great condition
The greens were not very good, one green had no grass and was completely sand. Most bunkers were full of water even though it had not rained in about a week. Very nice practice range.
Under Construction
Several of the holes were under construction. Even though we were able to tee off ahead of schedule, it was a loooong round. It took 5-1/2 hours to play 18.
Excited about improvements
This course was neglected under prior owner and course conditions still reflect that. There were some bare places on fairways, but these should improve when the grass starts growing again. Clearly, the new owner has made substantial improvements showing a commitment to make this a fine golf course. Looking forward to Spring to see how much better the course conditions get.
Hi there
My name is Bailey and I'm new at Southern Oaks Golf Club. I read your poor review of Southern Oaks on GolfAdvisor.com and wanted to share a few updates with you.
First let me say thank you for taking the time to write the review. We appreciate the opportunity to learn about the course and our operation.
Since early July we have not received a bad review, all 11 golfers, posting reviews, have recommended our course. We hope this means we have the course back in form but we know you are the ultimate judge on that. Please contact me at baileyteetimes@gmail.com as I'd like to provide you a promo code for a return visit. Yep, I'm asking you to come and play the course again and consider updating your review or posting a new one. We want to earn back your business and we're willing to sell you a very cheap round of golf to do it.
Thanks again for the review- it helped us to learn about our golf course and we're very thankful for that.
