I'm always a fan of playing from the back tees when they are tucked up in some trees above the fairway like here on #8. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 08/05/2017

A challenge but also a great deal
I am a high handicap golfer. That said, I still enjoy playing this somewhat difficult course. I have played twice now from the gold tees, and doing that makes it much more enjoyable. The grass in the fairways has been a little long, but we’ve had a very wet August. If you hit it in the rough you may as well kiss the ball goodbye. There are quite a few hazards, but once you play this course a couple times you quickly learn what you need to do to stay out of trouble. At the end of the day, if you hit generally where you’re aiming, it’s not that difficult. Just like any other course I’ve played. Yes it’s a challenge, but for the money it can’t be beat. The views on the back nine are fantastic.
Is what it is
Packsaddle has so much potential. Some beautiful views.
I’ve played here a lot. Condition varies from fair to awful. It’s been fair this fair, better than last year,
I take my 4yo with me and for $20 it’s perfect, if we only get a handful of holes in it’s not a big deal.
If you’re looking for a cheap course to play it’s perfect. If you’re going to be bothered by unplayable sand traps , greens with dead spots and crab grass in the fairways and tee boxes then go else where. If you’re just looking to get some swings in its great for that.
Greens rough
You couldn't make a putt 4 ft away they airrated the greens and never filled in the holes the worse shape greens I've played on all summer
Course is currently in bad shape
Greens half dead, fairways overgrown. Tees unmowed. Will not play here again at any price. It used to be beautiful but has not been kept up. Sad.
Birthday golf
Played on my 68th birthday, shot a 88. Great views but some greens are in rough shape due to drought.
Beautiful view
Although the course needs a little work, it is very playable with an excellent layout. I played this course several years ago and have not played for a while because of poor reviews. I took a chance this time around and was glad that I did. Great value for the bucks you pay. I will definitely play again.
Needs lots of work
I would safely say that 9 of the 18 greens have major issues. Looks like they got some type of disease or fungus.
Fantastic layout!
This course is challenging, but a lot fun to play! The layout is fantastic and fair. After hearing about poor conditions in 2019 we were pleasantly surprised how the conditions have improved. I would not let some of the reviews sway your decision to play this course. I play a lot of golf and this is one of my favorite layouts of all time.
Not bad for the money.
Very challenging course that is loaded with awesome views and scenery. Greens and tee boxes need improvement.
Best view in The Burg
The course just reopened. The greens are coming along nicely. Errant shots could be costly with high rough areas. Keep you balls in the fairways.
Always a challenge
I play this course every year when in Harrisonburg. however this was the worst condition I have seen the greens this fall. Having said that with the remoteness and lack of customers at this time of year, I can understand their budget may be limited? Having said that I still enjoy this challenging layout as a 15 hdcp I have yet to break 90! I have brought other single digit hdcps here and they have struggled to keep their scores in the 80's. I am not sure what the business case is for keeping this course open with the seemingly lack of play, but it would be a shame to see it close.
Great mountain layout
Great mountain layout Near Harrisonburg. Beautiful course, some great mountain vistas. Greens, collar, tee boxes could really use some work. Can only imagine this course in peak condition, some really challenging holes. Well worth the $35 rate from Golf Now. Some very interesting rock/stone designs and hazards.
Awesome hidden gem
After a senic approach we entered the Packsaddle course complete with charming bronze statuary and
a bubbling waterfall. We entered the upscale clubhouse and were greeted by knowledgeable and friendly
staff. We played the challenging mountain course which was in good condition considering the recent
drought. Many of the holes offer interest and challenges. The views from the back nine are stunning!
The quiet electric carts allow for many wildlife sightings. Lunch and beers at the 19th were great and
completed our pleasant golf outing.
Needs Help
First, the staff where extremely pleasant and helpful. This course layout is a true test of golf, its tight, hilly, and wayward shots are quite often punished. I like the layout. Unfortunately, over the last years the condition of the course continues to degrade. The tee boxes were crab grass, in many cases with only one tee marker. The greens had many dead areas, where the pins were positioned, on good grass, the greens were extremely slow. Bunkers had minimal sand and, in some cases, just weeds. Many had been raked. The fringes of the greens varied from nice grass to weeds. The fairways were OK, the rough a little high but mowed. The clubhouse was nice as always. A great layout, with great views, but given the condition of the last couple years, that was my last round there. The owners need to either invest the money necessary to bring the course back to a reasonable condition, or just close it.
