Great Bakery, Not so Great Course
Played on a very warm Saturday. No ability to book carts before arriving on golfnow, and no carts available once we arrived. We felt our pace was fine, having to wait for a foursome in front of us for a couple minutes for about 3 holes. Were then rudely told by staff at the snack hut to "catch up" as the group ahead of us got 2 holes ahead. This is possibly because the 13th whole (i believe?) is more like a mini-putt hole. No liquor served here. Also told my energy drink had to be disposed of if it contained alcohol? Not a pleasant experience.
Rude marshall
We were playing as a foursome on a Saturday morning tee off. The course was understandably busy, but not packed. We had a few beginners with our group and were respectful of players behind us. We had let a group of two pass us since they were playing faster than we were. Makes sense. However, the groups behind us after that were twosomes and even slower than we were. They were never waiting for us to finish a hole before having to tee off. A marshall comes out of nowhere and tells us we have to play faster because there are "several" groups behind us that are waiting. We said no problem and that we would let people pass. He said no and that we had to play faster. That we were not allowed to take turns hitting and that we all had to play at the same time to speed up pace of play. Completely disrespectful and lacking an understanding of who was waiting for who. After we had sped up according to his notice, we ended up being 2-3 holes ahead of the group behind us. Made no sense. I like the course and would like to remain a regular, but he was quite disrespectful.
Not all staff is rude here though. The staff at check in and the boy at the 12th hole refreshment spot were very nice.
Great course
It’s super nice and the people working make it even better. Although, I’m gaining a bit of weight from their delicious tarts lol
Price can’t be beat!
This was a very cheap round and it’s a beautiful course. There are a few holes in the middle that are flawed and frankly dangerous - there are 3/4 holes all very close and shots from other golfers get dangerously close. Would go back, as aside from those few holes, I love the rolling hills.
A Real Challenge
This course may be short but it is not short on challenge. It is very hilly and your drives need to be fairly accurate otherwise take lots of balls with you. The greens are very unusual in layout, size and toughness. We thought we were going to ace the course... not so.
It is great value for 18 holes.
Height of hills were not optimal for golf
For majority of the holes, the height of the hills were so tall that you can’t even see the flag for the hole. You were basically testing your vertical height golf skills and not horizontal. Disappointing.
Avoid this course! Unless it's your first time playing golf...
When booking my round I knew (based on other reviews) not to expect too much, and that's exactly what I got.
Pros
-Cheap about $27 walking with pull cart rental
-Friendly staff
Cons
-Many holes are under 100 yards, and the majority of the yardage distances listed on the signs and scorecard are incorrect. Hole 13 is listed as 85 yards, but using my scope is 64 yards.
-Absolutely ridiculous hole layouts on some holes. Lots of doubling back from the green to the next tee box.
-Blind tee shots, can't see other players or your ball.
-You may want to wear a helmet as some greens and tee boxes are in direct line of fire, almost got dinged a few times. And as this course appeals to the beginner- there are lots of crazy shots flying around, never heard a "fore" either.
-Some greens are tiny.
-Super hilly layout. I walk every course I play, and this was pushing the limits, a couple of holes were so steep I was barely able to pull my clubs up the hill.
-Although technically listed as located in Pickering, the course is located far north, just 14 mins to Port Perry on the Whitby boarder. So if coming from Toronto area be prepared for a long drive.
Although the conditions are okay and the price is cheap, trust me don't play here, spend a few more $ and go play a course you will enjoy- unless this is your first time playing golf then this is where you should play, as it likely won't make a difference.
Perhaps they could merge the 18 small holes into a nice 9 hole championship course one day... until then avoid!!!
Interesting Executive.
Executive course, par 60 with 4 or 5 par 4’s sprinkled in for good measure. Some challenging holes, hidden pin locations, dog legs. Great if you want to play 18 but you don’t have all day. We played 18 in around 3 hours. Nice little store with baked goods, fresh vegetables and an assortment of jams. I’ll be back for sure.
Very good executive 18
Hy-Hope golf course ws a nice surprise.
The green and tee conditions were good, fairways well cut and bunkers raked.
With no long holes and no waiting on the tees we completed 2 rounds of 18 in 5 hours using most of my clubs.
I will do it again
Hidden gem
I always love playing this course. It’s short but challenging with some memorable holes that requires smart golf. If you don’t feel like playing a full length course but want to play 18 it’s great.
I AGREE VERY BAD EXPERIENCE with "The Owner"..WAS ESCORTED OFF THE COURSE AS WE COULDN'T spot the
tee box on 9th hole tee box..."under NO
circumstances " were we allowed to park where we were! I'm floored NEVER been treated in such a condescending manner!
