Riverside Golf Club is appropriately named. The course sits in a floodplain along the Trinity River with water in play on seemingly every hole. This is a combination links-style/traditional layout that is surprisingly difficult for a municipal course. Great holes abound on the Roger Packard layout, which requires the rare combination of length and accuracy when playing from the tips.

Holes 4-6 offer one of the better stretches of golf, starting with a 462-yard par 4 that is cut in the landing area by pesky fairway bunkers, and features a long approach into an elevated green that is surrounded by water and slopes back-to-front. Club down on no. 4 because leaving it short still offers the chance for an up-and-down. No. 5 is a good par 3, especially from the middle tees where it generally plays as a short iron. Watch for the front pin placement, which can leave you with a long downhill putt if the tee shot is too long. Water looms to the right but it takes a bad shank to dunk it in the drink. No. 6 goes 543 yards, doglegging left along the Trinity with water fronting the green. The tee shot must be long and straight, and anything too far right leaves a precarious second shot around the bend.

The back side is the more fun of the two, taking you through good combinations of holes that offer excellent birdie opportunities if you’re on your game. You'll need those birds when you come down the home stretch.

Awesome course

Great layout. Great course conditions. One of the best values in DFW without question. I will be back many times. I play to a 5 HC and normally play from the blues but I played from the tips here and it was a great combination of challenge and enjoyment. Highly recommend this course.

Windy Beauty, Eyes Open!

This course is a challenge, especially on windy days. Some holes wind along the river (7 comes to mind), all the par 3’s have water in play except 16, which doesn’t need it as it’s a 180-195 yard shot uphill over a deep valley to a 2-tier green. I shot 92 and was proud of it!

I really enjoyed my round, course was in great shape from tee to green. I only have two critics:

Pace of play was a bit slow, round took nearly 5 hours. Hard to avoid at midday in the spring in DFW so no biggie.

Some of the holes crest scenarios where you run the risk of being hit into. On the front I believe the approach and green of 3, tee of 4, and fairway for 7 really almost overlap. On the back it’s fine for the most part, except 15 tee. People on the driving range were easily reaching the tee box and sending balls bouncing by us into the river. My group took turns watching so we didn’t get hit. I really think a net on the back left of the range should be put up.

But overall I had a great time, would definitely recommend and play again. Just keep your eyes open!!!

Great pace of play

I’ve golfed here a few times, and even on a busy weekend it seems like the play on this course stays pretty much constant after the first couple of holes. The staff has always been very friendly and helpful. Has several pretty tricky holes, but also a lot of simpler ones, so for a high handicap golfer like myself it presents its share of challenges, but isn’t so difficult that I can’t enjoy it. I would recommend trying it if you haven’t yet.

Muny

Wide open and windy with players and balls crossing over fairways often. For a creek bottom location- few trees were left to separate the holes or break the wind. Trees along the river bank would have helped- instead the river has chopped off several fairways, making play more difficult. Course is over-played- back to back on every hole, and the fairways show it. Endless tight lies right up to the greens. Greens dyed green, hard and fast.

Course layout good. The creek has truly done some damage. Excited to see green grass. Staff is excellent. Starter was a great transplant from PA.

Challenging Course, Good Value

I first played this last summer and found the layout very challenging. Played recently because it was pretty cheap, comparatively. Perhaps coincidentally, both rounds were under heavy wind. There are many tee shots that you have to hit to a somewhat blind location, so it helps to have a vet in the group help you out. A few holes can rock you if you don't hit your tee shot in the right place. There are also quite a few hills that leave you with tough lies, and the greens are small. I would say the course was still under winter conditions when I played this last time, and the greens were great for the time of year. They roll true and are acceptably fast. Tee boxes are decent. Good round for the price, but it's about 5 strokes harder than an easier course.
