Sharpstown Park Golf Course
About
Originally known as the Sharpstown Country Club back in the 1950s and '60s, and former host of the Houston Open, the course shut down amid financial turmoil until the city of Houston scooped it up in the late 1970s and hired Jay Riviere to renovate the layout.
With its generous fairways, the course is primarily known as a hacker-friendly track. Wayward tee shots are recoverable because of the relatively sparse tree-lined fairways. Even though there are some rather long par 4s, you'll be able to fire away with your driver on the straightaway holes.
The final stretch of golf is the best, with a few short par 4s and 3s as well as a birdie-able par 5.
Note that they refer to the net along No. 6 as the Zindler Net-it's a wire contraption installed to protect the home of local newsman Marvin Zindler, who lived near the course in the 1970s and '80s. Houstonites know Zindler for his infamous association with the famed La Grange chicken ranch.
Getting there : From Hwy 59 south take the Bell Aire Blvd. exit and turn right. When you come to Harbor Town Dr., turn right and the course is just down the road on the left side.

Sharpstown is playable
Played there today, greens in good condition despite having been aerated recently, fairways were a bit thin and ratty. Pace of play was slow but okay - I was in no hurry. Staff is friendly, I had my own cart, all was good.
Nice course, well maintained, fast greens. Looking forward to playing there again.
Great Value
I played with three other locals and had a great time. The course if flat and an easy walk. Given the time of the year the green were in good shape and the fairways firm so you got a pot of run on a shot. I would recommend this course to beginners and the average golfer. Low handicapers would find the course to easy.
It had rain a lot cart path only. Los of standing water.
Golf Etiquette 101
Got a great deal from GolfNow on Christmas Eve. The weather was perfect. We played the first hole fairly quick (didn’t have to spend much time searching for our golf balls). Then the fun stopped. The people in front of us were so bad, and had 0 golf etiquette. They would wait until the hole is clear before they would tee off. Never seen that in my life. We ended up skipping about 2 holes because of them and the long wait. I’ve never been there where we’ve had to wait extra hours to finish our round. Might be awhile before I go back.
Course
Not a bad course for the price. Needs some TLC on the greens and some fairways.
A Hidden Gem
This was the only golf course we could find open on Christmas Day. It was our first visit to thus old course hidden behind strip centers. Not much water, but well-kept greens and fairways. Very long greens, especially the par 5s, where the lady’s tees were often 100 yards forward of the whites. No drink cart, few carts the holiday we played, but overall a delightful surprise.
Modest muni
Came here in the afternoon following a morning at Memorial Park. It felt a little like a "have and have-nots" situation. Memorial Park just got $15 million and is part of a huge city park. Sharpstown is in a middle-class neighborhood with an outdated layout. Bizarre first hole: a long par 5 with two clusters of trees in the middle of the fairway. Greens rolled pretty good and can't complain about the turf quality for fall but the many ditches with standing water throughout the loop are a bit of a sore spot.
There was a steady stream of golfers here both playing and practicing on a Friday, so locals seem to like it, but I'd have a hard time recommending it to a visitor.
Do not play here, DO NOT
This course was by far the worst i HAVE EVER plauyed. Fairways terrible, teebox terrible, greens terrible, layout terrible. im an 8 handicap. if you like to wear jeans and never have swung a golf club this is your place. if you like to play golf go somehwere else.
Average All Around
Nothing too great or too bad about this course. Straightforward layout, with very few hazards to challenge or worry about.
Greens were in good shape but maybe something was off on the cut because every hole seemed to play at a different speed.
Tee boxes could use a trim. Fairways were very firm but good shape.
Net for a range and no beverage cart.
Pace of play was good due to the extreme heat but normally its an issue.
Worth it for a stress free round on a cheaper deal.
Don’t bother with a tee time
I I’ve played Sharpstown many times. The good - price and conditions. It’s a pretty nice course for a muni and especially the price. The bad - don’t bother with a tee time. They let everyone who walks up play. I’ve shown up pretty much every time I’ve played there to see a line of 12 carts waiting to tee off on #1. I quit waiting and I haven’t been back. Pace of play is usually not bad but can get really slow at times because they cram as many people as possible on the course.
