Oak Hollow Golf Course
About
After 50 years, the old 9-hole McKinney Municipal Golf Course shut down to make room for the new 18-hole championship layout now known as Oak Hollow. This new layout, designed by Maury Miller, opened in 1998, featuring rolling terrain that routes around six manmade lakes.
Miller’s design is particularly friendly from the middle tees, playing a fair 6,277 yards with several short par 3s and many average-length par 5s. The number one handicap is No. 15, a 423-yard par 4.
Getting there : Take Hwy. 75 north to Hwy. 380, then head east to Hwy. 5 (McDonald St.). The road veers and leads you 1 mile to the course.

Course is OK, not sure I would try it again
When we checked in, we were told they were running about 15 minutes behind so they offered tokens for range balls and apologized. We didn’t tee off until about an hour past our tee time and of course were then concerned if we could get 18 in before the sunset (and we were not able to finish). By now, the course was pretty backed up so had to wait for golfers ahead of us to clear on probably 1/2 the course. The staff was apologetic and offered us a free round the next time, so they were trying their best to acknowledge the unfortunate situation we were in. The course conditions were ok, not great. The course doesn’t have very many sand traps to get stuck in, has some elevation changes, and was overall relatively easy to play. The course directions were a little unclear but we had someone with us who played here before so that was helpful. We are new to the area and knowing there are plenty of courses to try, we will most likely seek an alternate course for the next round.
Great municipal course
You can’t beat the online specials for this course and the course itself is fun and several holes are challenging. I stack this muni against others in the area for fun and value. Greens are usually fast, which I like and will play here throughout the year.
Impressed with improvements
I’ve payed Oak Hollow probably something like 30 times over the past ten years or so. It’s never been one of my favorites—the layout is OK, the course conditions have typically been marginal, and the pace of play has always driven me crazy. I have to say, however, that this was one of the most fun rounds I’ve played in quite awhile, in spite of the fact that it was cart path only due to the massive rains of late. The greens on this course have obviously been reworked and were in the best condition I’ve ever seen them—kudos to the staff who’ve clearly worked hard to improve the conditions. The last time I played here I really thought I’d never come back, but I was going to be in the area and got a cheap tee time so I gave it another chance. Really glad I did! The staff here are so friendly and helpful and I ended up playing with a super group of guys. Thanks also to Carey who is one of the best hospitality people in the business—treats everyone like a friend.
A wet day to play
This is a very nice course to play with a very friendly staff. The course was wet due to heavy rain so there were some wet fairways and mud but me and a friend made the decision to play anyway. The greens are in very good shape. It has holes that you can recover on if you have a bad shots; and there are holes that will test your game and penalize you for bad shots. It is one of my favorite course to play. And GolfNow hot deals make it a great value for the money.
Great for the Kid
Great for working on the short game and playing with my six-year-old son.
It’s worth it
I play this course regularly and have reviewed it several times. Simply put it’s a nice course with a friendly staff. I recommend you go play it.
Great Course for the Price
Challenging and fun course for the occasional golfer. Hole 8 is unforgiving, but very fun to play. Will play many more rounds here.
Worth playing
Fairways and greens were in great shape. Greens had very good roll. Just a good old fashioned golf course that is worth playing. Very friendly staff. Go play it. It’s worth it.
Great Time!
The course is fun to play. I learned how to play golf on this course. Challenging enough to motivate me to improve and forgiving if I make too many mistakes. At the time I was in the ladies golf group and had a fantastic time. Hope to return soon to the course. Missing golf due to surgery to my right shoulder.
Last Round of 2017
Played this round at twilight, and it turned out to be my last round of 2017. It also turned out to be my best scoring round of the year. I enjoy playing at Oak Hollow. It is a great city course with a few challenging holes. For the most part, the course is pretty wide open.
First time playing here
I enjoyed playing this course. I got paired up with a group of older guys and a walker, so it was a little slower than i normally play but it was still decent pace because the course was fairly empty. it was 44 degrees and windy. The layout was pretty good, lots of doglegs. the course was in good condition for winter. the greens were in good shape. very fast. there were a few challenging holes. i will play here again if i get a good deal. i payed $28 and i think that was a good value for this course.
Goog Muni
This course is good for the average golfer. Green speeds are very good for 'old school bermuda'.
Course needs water in the Summer. Hard to believe the city of McKinney doesn't take better care of this place.
Once you get off the fairway its hard to find your ball
Hole # 8 needs a redesign. Hole #14 is funky too, no grass in the fairway. A lot of fairways have no grass in the fairway making for a lousy 2nd shot..
I like....
This is an older course that is one of my favorites to place. It was 49 degrees when I played. I like the layout of the course. It was in winter shape and damp. If you get a chance go play it.
Course not crowd during the week
Course is easy to get onto, great location for me as i live in McKinney, staff is very friendly
Much improved since early season 2017
Played this course a number of times over the past 5 years. Earlier this season I wrote a scathing review of the dead greens but now have to applaud their efforts to repair the greens.
As of Nov 2017, the greens are in near perfect condition.
Fun course
I enjoy playing this course. It’s simple but challenging in a few areas. I was playing as a single from the tips and I had a 3-some in front of me that would not let me play through. That kinda suck.
