Mesquite’s muni, located in the Duck Creek floodplain, was built in the 1960s by Leon Howard. Playing only 6,280 yards from the tips and void of bunkers, it makes for a fun day on the links. In fact, water comes into play only seven times–not as much as you might think for a floodplain course that has been ravaged by floods over the years.

The most challenging hole, No. 13, has water. It’s a 418-yard par 4 that doglegs right and features a tee shot over a creek, followed by a long approach to a tough, narrow green.

Other notes: Garrett Gill and George B. Williams redesigned this course.

Getting there : From I-30 east, take Northwest Hwy. for .5 mile to North Hwy. 67 and the course.

Nice layout

This course will be fun to play when grass grows! However, someone better figure out how to make the greens a fair challenge. They were so fast and the pins were all stuck on the side of a hill....it just became a joke to auto add four strokes to each score if you were farther than ten feet on first putt. Ridiculous greens.

Tough for no real reason...

Nice staff, nice place.

Don’t get the assigning carts 15 minutes before the round rule. Kinda weird.

Layout is good. Pretty open but with enough challenges.

Fairways are not fairways. Grass is very poor. Think the first cut on most others courses and that’s what to it you’re shooting in from.

Main reason for average review isn’t the greens. The are impressively kept and they run true. SO MUCH undulation. It was fun for the first few holes but when you see a 2ft birdie putt roll 8 feet past a few times it starts to grind. And I wouldn’t mind this EXCEPT when’s you know the greens are tough, why place the pins in such difficult positions? I’m talking holes cut into the downslope. I’m a fan of tough greens but this just seemed totally pointless. Be hard but still be fun.

There are way better courses around. Bad fairways and crazy pin placements will mean I won’t be back soon.

Why I make time to play a few times a year

The greens. Fun and pure. It was cold and wet, which leaves mud in the fairways so the round was difficult. However, mid winter greens are fast and true. Great muni.

The fastest greens you ever played.

My first time at Mesquite. I read the reviews before going and was prepared for fast greens but these were unbelievable. I am extremely diligent about scoring my shots- all of them, but when the greens were this incredibly fast, if I got within 2-3 feet I was done. The 3 footers would roll right by! I couldn't hit it any softer in some cases and when EVERY ball rolled 4 feet past the hole I quickly realized they were unfair and just took my score whatever it was if I got within 3 feet. The pin placement on most of the greens was on a mound or incline as well, making your green reading skills important. The 2 guys I played with said they have never seen pins placed as difficult as they were today. The fairways were fairly soft but had some wet patches and ground under repair areas so staying out of those areas was important. I expected more ball roll near the greens but didn't get it in most cases, the ball would stop short and not roll up to the green. The one bunker I had to hit out of was as fluffy and soft as you would want, I am used to seeing gravel and hard pack but this one was nice, I actually made a decent shot on the greenside bunker. The cart paths are smooth and the tee boxes are well marked. There was no beverage cart service and they don't allow food & drink to be brought onto the course so we rented the cooler at the 19th hole and bought their drinks and re-filled with water on the course. All in all I would play again now knowing what to expect on those slick greens.
