Mesquite’s muni, located in the Duck Creek floodplain, was built in the 1960s by Leon Howard. Playing only 6,280 yards from the tips and void of bunkers, it makes for a fun day on the links. In fact, water comes into play only seven times–not as much as you might think for a floodplain course that has been ravaged by floods over the years.

The most challenging hole, No. 13, has water. It’s a 418-yard par 4 that doglegs right and features a tee shot over a creek, followed by a long approach to a tough, narrow green.

Other notes: Garrett Gill and George B. Williams redesigned this course.

Getting there : From I-30 east, take Northwest Hwy. for .5 mile to North Hwy. 67 and the course.

Course was in great shape. The greens were smooth and fast, and the fairways were in excellent shape as well.

Great Public Course with Greens that are Amazing

This course is not your standard Public course that is easy and has bad greens. This course is difficult and the Greens are in great shape, fast, smooth, but worth the trip.

The starter told us not to be above the hole and he was right. They had redone all the greens and they did a great job.

Staff Attitude and Course Set Up Ruin What Could Be a Great Course

The layout of this course is completely fine, but the greens are extremely fast. Faster than most country club courses I've played, which is a lot, but that is also completely fine as it’s great to see such greens at a public course. What ruins it is that the greens are very hilly, which in itself is also fine, but they choose to cut the holes on the inclines of those hills on almost every hole. This means anything but a straight uphill putt unfairly rolls yards away from the hole, turning most of your GIRs into 3-putt bogeys as putts would arc up a sidehill and then coast twice as far from the hole on the other side. I do note I played a charity tournament here the very next day and it was the first time I had seen all the holes cut on flat portions of the greens, and my guess is they wanted participants to enjoy the course and maybe come back in the future, so they didn’t want to frustrate them with the usual ridiculous hole placements.

But the worst thing about this course is the staff. They treat players like they would rather not have them touch their course at all. They have marshals patrolling every hole, which is very uncomfortable as they stalk you during your round, and rather than hiding while you hit, they stop in your line-of-sight and watch you closely. They also drive up on you while you’re on the teebox addressing the ball, which is one of the rudest thing anyone can do on a course. They also tell you not to drive the cart on most of the rough to find/play your ball, especially between any trees, which is frankly where you need your cart the most to both find your ball and decide your recovery shot. You also cannot drive your cart to the practice chipping area, which is not very close at all to the clubhouse and which allowing would not interfere with anything at all. But by far the most ridiculous thing we experienced was being lectured on how we were supposed to pick up a ball out of a hole! Note there are an excessive amount of unrepaired ballmarks from the golfers too special to repair their mark, but never a mention from the marshal-per-hole stalking each group for these selfish jerks to repair damage they caused.

Although I’ve played here many times, the treatment by the staff in both their unnecessary lecturing of ridiculous rules and their continuous stalking of each group is too distracting to want to return to this course any more. The entire round you are too distracted by wondering if you’re breaking yet another unwritten made up rule, which you’re about to be called on by the stalker following you before each shot, than to enjoy your round.

Mesquite is sweet

I have been bouncing around the North Dallas and Frisco golf courses and was looking for at change of my routine. I’ve been wanting to visit Mesquite for a while but I always thought it was too far of a drive. I finally decided to go ahead and give it a shot. The drive was easy went down the tollway went east on 635 went north on 30 and I was there it was a quick 25 minute drive no big deal. Great course !!

Good challenge for any level of golfer

Mesquite is a challenging course for all types of players but allows you to score by making good choices. Greens are quick and undulating so careful reading is required. There are several risk / reward holes that will allow you to go for it or play it safe. Greens are well maintained, sand traps are in good shape as well as fairways. Staff is helpful and friendly with Marshalls to help the pace. Overall this is a hidden gem close to Dallas and a fantastic bargain.

Hidden Gem

My first thing to look at, as a scratch golfer, are the greens. And they were SUPERB. They ran at least 10-11 on the stimp, true challenging slope and roll. The second thing I look for is layout. On the difficulty scale, I think it's only a 128 slope because of the length. More than a few tee shots caused you to either place, or shape your shot. Some elevated greens, but also some chances to attack. Absolutely incredible. Would recommend to anyone.

Bang for your buck

The Mesquite golf course has taken the customer's opinion very serious, they have made the appropriate upgrades and changes throughout the course that makes it a very inviting and friendly place to play. It is definitely the biggest bang for your buck, and the greens create a respectable challenge. Even though the course does not reflect difficulty as it relates to distance, many of the mini tour players have said it is one of the most difficult courses to score on, but it is not intimidated.

Regular Muni Course

Paid $40, range mats only, greens have a lot of slope but they were punched and full of sand. Was not happy with condition of the greens, they weren’t rolling true. Would only play this course in the spring or fall during the wetter months.

Challenging

Mesquite is a really good golf course. The greens are fast, and challenging, the staff friendly, even the marshals! A few of the fairways have bare spots, but mostly it's a good, challenging course.

Impressed

I first played this course last winter...and as you can imagine it was not in the best, most presentable shape. Fast forward several months. A group of friends and I, some whomplayed with me then first time and some who's first time to play the course, were very impressed with the overall condition, layout, pace of play and greens speed. We played from the blue tees. From there the course presents itself with a number of challenges and inviting opportunities to put your ball in play off of the tee box and on approach shots as well; however, be warned, there are numerous hazards, including water, sand traps, deep rough and undulating greens that will humble the best of golfers.

If you've never played MGC or it has been a while since you last played, treat yourself to an outstanding golf experience that won't cost you a fortune.

Greens greens greens

I'd describe this course as a typical metropolitan muni until you step on the greens, then it becomes special. I can't remember playing smoother or faster (pro-speed) bernuda greens anywhere. Even with the speed, full and chip shots hold and check predictably. A hot deal at this course is the best deal in town.
