Developers eventually had their way with this cow pasture on the fringe of Houston. Loaded with native pecans and oaks and supplemented with even more transplanted trees, the terrain is ideal for golf, with two creeks and five natural lakes on the property. In fact, it's good enough to host the PGA Tour's Houston Open in 1973 and 1974.

The traditional El Dorado Course plays to a par 70 and features five par 3s that go 190-yards-plus from the tips. Jay Riviere designed the back nine.

Jeff Blume managed the redesign and complete renovation of the El Dorado Course in 2009.

Great Course - Has Shade

Course was in great shape. Greens rolled nicely. Long par 3’s. Layout is challenging but allows for a good time for all levels. Makes you play smart.

It’s nice that there is shade around almost all tee boxes to get out of the sun a little.

Best course on the south side

Everyone’s friendly. The food is good. Decent pro shop. Course is amazing. You can go low here or find yourself in a world of trouble. Course management is the key. Greens have got way better over the last couple of years. The biggest problem with this course is the only men that play there. They don’t fix their pitch marks. Pace of play is good. And cart girls are always out.

Very fun course

Fun course. I had a rough front 9 but recovered on back nine. Lots of hazards and fairways on the narrow side. It pays to understand the hazard locations because they are well disguised. I highly recommend

Great course. Play too slow.

Even though the greens have not yet fully recovered from aeration, they were playable. The course is in fine condition.

But when will marshals actually help keep the pace of play within their own rules? A five+ hour round in summer heat is terrible.

Pace of Play is Bad

Course is in so-so shape. The greens haven't recovered from punching and sanding earlier in the season. My main complaint is pace of play. We were about to take the tee box when the group that supposedly had the tee time right before us showed up 10 minutes late. The starter forced us to allow them to go ahead instead of making them wait for the next available slot. The round took 4 hours and 40 minutes on a Thursday morning! This is unacceptable. The screen showed us 32 minutes behind pace and the Marshal's just drive by and wave. They do nothing to speed up play!

Slow Greens

Greens were painfully slow. Not worth the $86. More like $50-60 greens..

Other than that, the course was in good shape.

Best value course in Houston

This course was better than some courses I’ve paid over $100/round to play. I’d pay $60 every day of the week to play this course. Fun course. Great condition. Friendly staff.

Blazing hot

The title refers to the weather and to how our foursome played, despite hot, humid conditions and wet fairways.

Excelent course -- Very slow pace

Course was in great shape; would have enjoyed it more if not for the two five somes in front of us. Marshall came by but not sure if he told the groups to speed up or not.

Great Course

Second time at El Dorado course at Quail Valley. Really like the course. Has a few challenging holes and a couple other parts that “encourage” smarter golf. It is friendly to higher handicap players.

Greens were in good shape. Fairways were excellent.

However, I think the course designer had one too many Olde Fashioned’s when he set up the par threes. They are not very friendly - LONG!

Can’t wait to go back.
