Greatwood Golf Club
About
Greatwood is known for its white sand bunkers and impressive par 3s, three of which play right at or over 200 yards. The 1989 Carlton Gipson design features elevated tees and greens that sandwich plush fairways and are contoured with mounds.
The 434-yard par 4 hole 5 is one difficult par, featuring a fairways loaded with bunkers and involves water on the approach. No. 18 goes 576, yards. While the tee shot is fairly standard, the second shot must land short of a plateau and might involve a blind approach shot if placed too far to the left. The intimidating approach plays into a green surrounded by water on three sides.
Getting there : From Hwy. 59 south, turn left on Crab River Rd., then make a left onto the other side of Hwy. 59. Look for Greatwood Pkwy. and make another left when you get there.

Don't waste your money or time
I used to play this course regularly with my young son about 20 years ago. It was one of the best public courses in Houston. Conditions were almost always very good, even in hot, dry weather. The staff was very friendly, especially toward my then 9 year old son. We played slow of course, but the marshals were understanding of a new, young player and never gave us a hard time as long as we were letting the faster groups through. Over the years this course has gone to pot. The course care is near nonexistent. From tee box to green, the ground is rock hard, the grass is very poorly maintained, the greens shouldn't even be called "greens" as there is far more dirt patches and weeds than grass. We had drenching rains the week before I played on May 4th. I thought I'd give the course a chance since I hadn't been in years and thought it might have improved or at least been in decent shape after all the rain. It made virtually no difference. Boxes hard w/ little decent grass, fairways also hard, lots of dirt patches and weeds, greens with lots of dead areas, weeds, and grass that was obviously not tended to. "Sand traps" are a joke as they are nothing more than dirt holes, little to no actual sand in any of them. They do have good carts with GPS. They also have the warning system that won't let you drive too close to greens or out of bounds. This was also a problem as you can't drive too far off the cart path to search for a ball. I'm 66 and my knees are poor, being able to drive out in the rough, which is cut deep in the area beneath power lines and used to be possible, really helped. Not any more. I just forgot the ball and took a stroke. It also wouldn't let me drive up to the forward tee box, again forcing me to walk an extended distance to tee off. Overall it was a poor experience. I'm glad I only paid $40 for the round as a senior but felt that was overcharging me for the condition of the course. Also, I stopped at the turn and got a few cold drinks. The girl was stocking the fridge and I felt like I was disturbing her when I asked for them, going by her reaction, tone, and facial expression. There are also no marshals on the course and delays are rampant. I play slow and have no problem letting groups thru, which I did 3 times. But, I still caught up to those faster groups because the ones in front of them were so slow but wouldn't let anyone play thru them. No marshals anywhere on the course to help with speed of play. Needless to say, I won't ever be back. As the old saying goes "a bad day of golf is still better than a good day at work", well, not at Greatwood. Don't waste your money or your time.
Nice Course - Challenging at Times
Nice course. Layout on a number of holes makes you think and plan. Smart golf will better your score. Most greens were decent - a couple could use some help.
Fun day.
Rough Greens
Fairways are in pretty good shape, the greens, not so much.
Never again
Weather was great. Course condition was awful. Bunkers were bad, greens were even worse. No soap in bathrooms, no water or cups in some of the water stations. Clubhouse was old and smelly. Worst course I’ve played in the Houston area thus far. First and last time visiting this course.
What A Waste
Course is dry as a bone from Tee Box To Green. Hardpan fairways and greens A little water would help. Don't waste your money or time. That is why it been a year or so that I've play here.
Elegant and well kept up
The greens were pure, and the views are premium. Will be going back again soon.
Great layout, but in rough shape
The greens are in very rough shape especially in the front nine. The driving range is somehow even worse. I would avoid unless they really spend some time to fix the golf Course and get it back to its former glory
Greatwood Golf Course
The greens could use a little TLC, but overall fun track to play.
Needs Maintenance Greens Terrible
Greens are terrible and the course is in disrepair. The ownership is obviously not engaged and in tune with their customers basic expectation of a golf course.
Everything about this course is disappointing. Visible damage to the Signage, cart paths and general upkeep. The practice area is in bad shape and their $8 for a small bucket of balls is one of the highest I've seen in the Houston area. The Clubhouse is dark and dated, the pro shop steps are cracked. We won't be back there.
Bad conditions but has potential
If this is your only option just don’t play use your time more wisely.
Never again
Every time I played this course in the last couple years, it’s been horrible. Yesterday was the worst and we left after 12 holes. Everything about this place is bad.
Bad on top of worse
A great layout is going to pot. Un-puttable greens, untended tee boxes, bare spots everywhere.
Add a starter who is just a ticket-taker with no idea of what letting three singles play one after the other can do to delay play.
Add a nanny who takes a baby in a strolled down the cartpath when play is going on: DANGER!
Where is the marshal? Of course, there is no marshal.
A shame, because Greatwood is a great layout.
Some work needed
Friendly starter! Aging club house….Carts banged up….Greens need work!! Ball wobbles and can change directions at any time. For the rest, fairways were ok and atmosphère is relaxed…but the drive is really not worth it.
Decent layout, Greens need work
Have not played here recently and since then the greens have taken a turn for the worse. Solid layout, relatively tight course and teebox and fairway conditions were good. Too many bare or bumpy patches on the greens for my taste. Solid course if they can get the greens back in order.
Greens
Worst greens I've played on in a while. Some of the tee boxes are less than desirable as well. I paired up with a resident and he said this is common for the time of year but it's the only course I've seen with such severity.
