Iron Horse Golf Course
About
Iron Horse Golf Course is laid out in the floodplain of Fossil Creek, an area loaded with woods and a railroad that divides the property into three tracts. When Dick Phelps designed the golf course he loaded it with par 4s that are over 400 yards. This track has only two par 5s, but you'll get your money's worth as they are virtually impossible to reach in two. Iron Horse's best hole is the 462-yard, par-4 third hole, which is generally a bogey hole for the average golfer.

Lots of ground under repair on every fairway. This was one of the better ones. Photo submitted by Ken9948006 on 03/27/2023

Fairways Great, Greens good, tee boxes bad
Greens still growing in from spring aeration, little rough but playable. Fairways are excellent. Tee boxes once again need a lot of work. They are overgrown, rough and very difficult to find a flat spot to play from. I played whites today and greens last round, didn't matter.
Course - Rough Shape
The course was pretty bad! Rocks and mud in the middle of the fairway! Bunkers were in bad shape. Greens were pretty slow and bumpy
Basically it is in pretty good shape. This year they are struggling with a water issue..too much of it. Lots of mushy areas in the fairways and around the greens. The tee boxes are in good shape. The greens were just aerated so putting was interesting. For warm up you have to hit from mats even though there is ample grass available. I’m not sure why we hit from the mats. Nice large putting green that is usually very similar to the pace of the on course greens. Well worth the fee I paid I would say.
Decent course
The course was in good condition except for the erosion around many of the greens...due to recentl rains
Time to invest
Greens GREAT...Tee Boxes remain hilly and fairways still have dirt piles...Traps shot,,Keep it in the fairway and on the green and conditions great...but take care of rest NRH!!!
Course had received heavy rains over night so it was sloppy and cart path only. The tees and greens are in good shape. the practice range is still mats only. It was very hot and humid but there are several old water stations on the course. It was still a great value for the highly discounted rate on GolfNow.
Pace of play
The pace of play is awful. They try to put so many people on the course at once it’s ridiculous. Golf isn’t fun like that. Other than the pace of play it is a beautiful and enjoyable course.
Getting there
Tees and fairways in good shape. Greens on front nine need more attention many sanded bare spots, back nine were in good shape compared to front The pace today was slower than usual for a Thursday 4.5 hours Still always enjoy my rounds on this course
Great Condition
Though I have played here several times before, my most recent trip found the best conditions I've seen here. The fairways were over-seeded rye, giving great lies every time, and the greens were fantastically fast fast.
The course is short (6500 tips) fairly tight in spots, and has lots of trees, and several holes that skirt the edge of the neighborhood. Many par 4's require precision off the tee with less than driver. Water/creek/pond in play on 15 of 18 holes. All the Par 3's are different, so you can use PW through 5 iron.
My 2 Main Issues with Iron Horse:
Pace of Play: There is often a bottleneck around the Train(bathroom/halfway house) that can cause long delays. If you aren't the first one off or playing at twilight, expect the rounds to exceed 5 hours at peak times.
Unwalkable: There is a pretty good hike between 1-2, 6-7, 11-12, 1-18, and 18 to clubhouse. Also, you don't see the clubhouse at all until you are finished.
TLC
Greens coming in and fairways lush...Bunkers, few fairways and some tee boxs need TLC..
Great, except one thing.
I really like this course. Making good shots is a must and it’s always in great shape. The only issue I have is that their golf carts are terrible. They have GPS which is helpful but they are the absolute worst for driving (tough to turn) and braking ( brakes hardly ever lock) in this area. If they would fix that, it would be a much better experience.
Grass was too long.
Tee box had long grass so I could not see how much high tee must be.
Green had lot of sand instead of grass.
Grass was too long even in fairway.
Time to invest
Love this course and time to get fairway water patches, selected tee boxes, and sand trips repaired!!! This gem needs a little work around the edges to be a top public in area,,,,
Time for TLC
Time to get the bogs out of selected fairways, fix some tee boxes and redo the traps.....This along with sanding the greens(which is understandable) turns a potential gem into a bit of a construction area......The staff is great and because of conditions, green fee's and beverages were reduced-a classy move. But let's get our course whipped into shape with some NRL $$$$$. It's TIME!!!
