Iron Horse Golf Course
About
Iron Horse Golf Course is laid out in the floodplain of Fossil Creek, an area loaded with woods and a railroad that divides the property into three tracts. When Dick Phelps designed the golf course he loaded it with par 4s that are over 400 yards. This track has only two par 5s, but you'll get your money's worth as they are virtually impossible to reach in two. Iron Horse's best hole is the 462-yard, par-4 third hole, which is generally a bogey hole for the average golfer.

Lots of ground under repair on every fairway. This was one of the better ones. Photo submitted by Ken9948006 on 03/27/2023

Great place to play, practice, or eat
The course is really pretty and laid out well. The practice facilities are really nice and the burger at the pro shop was amazing. The golf shop is small but loaded with choices and the staff is really friendly. The only issue I had is there were three holes down for renovation and there were a bunch of muddy spots throughout the course. I would definitely love to return here in the spring or summer when the grass is green.
Really nice place to play!
The only thing negative I have to say about this course is the few muddy spots scattered around and the fact that they are revamping three holes so I only got to play 15. Other than that this course is great and very fun and challenging.
Hard to find your way to next hole
Winter golf ....very windy, a bit chilly and course was in average shape. Layout out wasn’t bad BUT many times it was not easy to find the next tee box - they had tees marked but NO directional signs or arrows pointing you to the next tee and in some cases you had to travel a fair distance and it was not clear where to head.......a good example is you finish playing #17 - you travel back under the road - and must decided do I turn left or right - no sign indicating that you have to travel a long distance up and around a green you have already played - a bit pricey for the conditions
Poor fairways
Fairways were in poor shape. Havent played there in awhile and not sure how long its been that way. No marshal to keep pace of play moving on a Sunday either.
Fun course to play! Definitely a must golf.
I played Iron Horse for the first time today. The course is a lot of fun! Tee box conditions were ok, seemed to be oddly uneven, but the greens were in great condition. Fairways were in okay condition, and the traps were basically straight dirt. The steering on both carts seemed messed upped and mine had a cracked rim, but the gps worked well.
Layout of the course was a lot of fun and all the staff were very friendly. I’ll definitely be back!
Good ole iron horse
Love the course a lot of target golf. Greens very good fairways has some bare spots on certain holes but mostly good tee boxes ok course has always had a water problem (standing in fairways) and very wet in certain areas but it looks to be getting addressed and better Golf carts were the worst part of the round no brakes steering by Armstrong and tires bald GPS is nice thougg
i am so waiting for the city to invest
Jeez, one of the greatest tracks in town, and we a have to deal with 1. BOGS of swamp in the middle of the fairway 2. Tee's that make you play out of the secondary rough, not to mention some with side hill lies 3. Carts that make pre power steering drive SEEM like power steering...Hate playing a course that punishes a drive down the middle with a mud puddle with a lost ball. A great layout that needs TLC and a city to INVEST now..
Course is in major need of repair/maintenance
Everything good....
But the course....
If you are looking for a level tee box don’t go here!!!
The whole course needs a major overhaul!!!!
As a first time observer
I value interaction with golf course employees quite highly. The two young men in the pro shop were very polite and cheerful. The driving range is good too. This course is beautifully laid out with lots of moderate elevation changes and only a few fairways had some water damage. The greens were of a moderate speed. I got lost on a couple of holes so a few more directional signs would help. Overall this is an excellent value for the player who prefers to not play on a "back and forth" municipal course.
Course is overpriced on the weekend
The staff is excellent...friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The golf carts need replacement, the steering was very difficult and the tires were bald; however, they do have very accurate GPS. The course seems to be experiencing a serious water drainage issue. Several holes had standing water and we have had several days of 100° days and no rain. There were many areas that were mushy, bunkers were muddy and had many rocks. Standing water was so bad that I lost a ball in the fairway in a hole filled with water.
There are several tee boxes available, but the tee boxes are in poor shape. The greens are in decent shape and roll true. The course layout can be confusing and more signage could be helpful. I would recommend playing the course during the week where rates are more reasonable for the calibre. The weekend rate I paid left me feeling disappointed.
Great track with TLC coming
Greens in great shape...Waiting for the investment to make a good course great i.e. the wet areas on the fairway and traps...One of the neatest layouts around and a great staff, and food....New carts coming and will help tremendously as well.
Great Course in the Hot weather
We played at 1:22 on 8-17-19 and it was hot. The course was in great shape. They punched the greens and you could still see where they affected your putts but other than that the course was great. There were 5 of us and we had holes open in front of us and behind us so the pace of play was great. The guys in the pro shop were great as usual. The cart girl kind of disappeared but they had water on the course that was great. I will play this course whenever I can even though I live in Decatur.
Great course friendly staff
I play this course often. Love the layout. There was a lot of water on the course and soft areas in the fairways. Maybe watering too much or they need to work on drainage . Good round overall!
Iron Horse heat of the day
Course pace and staff were awesome, so were the members we played with. I did go into the restaurant after my round and was told I would have to eat outside, due to an incoming tournament concluding. Not really, what I wanted to hear after playing in 100 degree heat..
Better than the cowboys course!!!!
Even though it rained all day the fairways held up till the end had to do cart path only. The fairways are superb and the greens are green and have good action on them. I would play this course every weekend!
