Greatwood Golf Club
About
Greatwood is known for its white sand bunkers and impressive par 3s, three of which play right at or over 200 yards. The 1989 Carlton Gipson design features elevated tees and greens that sandwich plush fairways and are contoured with mounds.
The 434-yard par 4 hole 5 is one difficult par, featuring a fairways loaded with bunkers and involves water on the approach. No. 18 goes 576, yards. While the tee shot is fairly standard, the second shot must land short of a plateau and might involve a blind approach shot if placed too far to the left. The intimidating approach plays into a green surrounded by water on three sides.
Getting there : From Hwy. 59 south, turn left on Crab River Rd., then make a left onto the other side of Hwy. 59. Look for Greatwood Pkwy. and make another left when you get there.

Good day on the course!
Talk about good pace. Buddy and I zoomed through in 3 hrs. First time I've gone to a course where there was literally NOBODY on the course with us. We tee'd off at 1230. Course was in great shape btw.
This place is in horrible shape
This may have been the absolute worst cared for course I have ever played. I stopped after 9 holes. You needed a hammer to even put a tee in the ground. The fairways had huge cracks in them. I should've gone in and asked for a refund it was so bad. There were no scorecards on the carts and the guy didn't even give me a key when I checked in. Do not waste your time or your money. Had I known what the course was like...I wouldn't have paid $5. The pace of play was excellent because it was empty. I should've clued in to that. DO NOT PLAY HERE. BTW...this is the first review I've written and I've played a lot through golfnow.
Needs hydration
The course was very dry, felt like it hadn't been watered in weeks. Staff member said that they could no longer use the ponds to water the course. The course conditions will be completely dependent on rain water to keep the course in good playing condition.
Greatwood
Course was not in bad shape overall. Yes the tee boxes are rock hard. The sand traps were fine. The greens were ok, they had been aerated and sanded within a few weeks ago but for the most part rolled pretty good. For whatever reason there was very few people on the course allowing us to play in just about 3 hours even. #NICE I would definitely play Greatwood again.
Friday off golf day
Wife and I decided to head back to a course we had not played since we first lived in the Houston back in 2005. Course was showing some wear and tear but staff were amazing. Would have liked to see a bit of a discount as the greens had been dressed and aerated on Monday of this week. When they did the greens they should have done the tee boxes as well needed a hammer to get your tees in. Other then these issues course layout was fun. Course is well bunkered and has a number of hidden water hazards you can not see from the tee box. Some signage stating distance to the water would help but with relatively dry firm conditions and low shot seemed to run an extra 20-30 yards so laying up was not necessarily easy either. Based on how I played I should be trashing the course but at my age we just enjoy the day and time together and modify the rules a bit. (Inside the leather a gimme put on aerated greens) . No beverage cart out so reason for slightly lower course amenities. Would play some different shots or different clubs. Number 10 probably one of the best drives I hit all day only to find a blind water hazard had claimed it. Would play it again but give it some rain to soften things up. And couple weeks to have the greens smooth out.
Heavy Rain Didn't Allow a Fair Evaluation
The course was in good shape considering the problems with rain and cold in Houston this winter. Yeah, cold and Houston in the same sentence. The greens in Houston didn't like it. I will say Greatwood's greens were in good shape. much better than other places I've played this spring. Challenging layout if you have trouble with water. I think it's easier to count the holes that don't have water than the ones that do. Of course, the water in the fairways contributed to some issues with playability. I like the layout. It is challenging to all but the single digit handicaps.
Don't play unless conditions get better
Everything was hard. Tee boxes were so hard couldn't get the tee in the ground. Front nine greens were so terrible. Fairways were so terribly hard your elbows could go bad. Bunkers had just half an inch of sand and base were hard earth. Overall bad experience and would never play there.
Bad Hot Deal First Experience
Not that anyone will read this, I thought it would just help to express my experience. The Golf Now Hot Deal price, should explain why the price was so low. There were not many cars in the parking lot, and on a beautiful Friday afternoon. This was my first time to play at Greatwood, and will likely be my last, unless I could be convinced and confirmed that there were a LOT of improvements made. The tee boxes were hard as a rock, with white sand all over the top, and it was almost impossible to get a tee into the ground without breaking it. The fairways seemed to be cut too short, scalped in some areas, very dry and hard, even sometimes causing a shot off dirt, in the fairway. There was sometimes standing water or mud, even though the other areas were very dry and hard. The sand in the bunkers was hard in many areas, then the greens were quite short and dry. Too bad, as I had expected more, from what I had heard about this up scale area, and the homes around the golf course appear to be well taken care of. Now I understand why there were only a few players on a great Friday afternoon.
Greatwood Not So Great
I was looking forward to playing this course and didn't want to believe the bad reviews. After playing the course, I have to agree that this course needs an upgrade. The course layout is great but the conditions of the hardpan fairways and rock hard tee boxes is sad. A course like this needs to be watered and nurtured. I guess they are just not trying to achieve "elite" status anymore. I will play elsewhere.
Greatwood could be with some work
Booked a Hot Deal. Weather was really nice with some stiff breezes which made for some creative shot making. We play the white tees which played a little under 6100 yards. Front desk was friendly as well as the starter. Good driving range and practice greens one for chipping and one for putting. Tees boxes were hard, fairways were hard, greens were firm. Signs of improved maintenance with fairways looking like the were recently aerated. Sand traps were consistent with Brazos river red sand in them. Greens putted nicely with decent undulations that is not overblown.
Understand that I am a vision imp;aired golfer that is legally blind so being able to see the layout is rather difficult so take my impressions with a grain of salt. I thought the front nine was decent but seemed to have a sameness to the holes that was probably more subtle than I could detect. The back none is much more challenging and memorable. I think I shot an 87 with a 44/43 as my short game was on and I made some good putts. I am very lucky to have a younger brother that picks me up and takes me to play golf, watches where my ball goes and helps me to know where the pin is and is how and why I enjoy playing.
Cart service on the course was excellent. The marshals also did a great job of keeping the pace of play up.
This course is a fairly long drive from my part of town but I would return again especially if the course maintenance is continued like it appears they are working on. I would like to see how it looks in a couple of weeks.
Great Price
It was a good price on a hot deal to get a round in. The tee boxes were terrible and it was difficult to stick your tee in the tee box on every single hole except one.
The course was pretty short and filled with slow golfers but we finally got to play through on number 5 and it was smooth sailing after that. Greens were decent and fairways were ok. It was a 90 deg rule Day and it had barely rained the day before.
All in all, for $40 it was a good deal for my first round of 2017 and would recommend this course with the aforementioned warnings.
Great layout
Playing through Greatwood was amazing. Lots of shade⛳
For the price it was good
Cant beat the Golf Now price for a round, but the people that paid the normal rate of $57 would probably be disappointed. Course not in very good shape, and staff at front desk and in the bar area weren't very friendly. There was no beverage cart, and on course bathrooms were rough.
Would only play again if I found a cheap Golf Now rate.
This course has determinate grestly
It has been years since I played Greatwood , but it has deteriated greatly. It use to be well maintained, manicured very in years past. There was no drink or food service for golfers off or in the course. Some drinking stations even did not have water cups. There are courses around Houston that are chargibg $15-$20 with much better services and amenities. It must be bad when community residents were asking me why I was playing there. One very good aspect of the course are the greens are very challenging. I will not be playing this course until there are tremendous changes.
Nice layout. A few really tough holes when winds are blowing.
Tee boxes were in need of some moisture. Almost needed a hammer to get your tee in the ground. Some bunkers needed sand and others had very poor rake equipment. Other than that the course was in good shape.
