Quirky course but challenging
Royston is EXTREMELY hilly so be prepared for some steep inclines both up and down. Also, the rough was VER long so a few balls lost in the hay! Some really memorable holes and the greens were really good and consistent. I think it's a 'marmite' type of course. Some will love it. I personally didn't like it that much. However, I've rated it fairly well as the overall experience was good.
Great tee boxes and greens, shame about everything else.
First of all the plus points. The tee boxes and greens were as good as I've seen them on this course. Extremely well maintained.
Now the negatives. The rest of the course was a shambles. Fairways, if you could call them that, with weeds and wild flowers growing everywhere. More like an 'unfair way'. Then the bunkers, which ranged in consistency from a kiddies sandpit to 'oh, are we supposed to have sand in this hole in the ground'. Then we come to the the worst aspect, pace of play. Having to wait on single player, who took between 3 to 5 minutes just to decide on what club to use, and then duffed the shot anyway. People need to understand that there's a courtesy that needs to be applied when you play golf, such as, take as long as you like, just don't make others take as long as you like.
Hilly and undulating course with good greens
We played on a day that was sunny and dry. Do not recommend carrying unless you are really fit. Lots of walking and climbing could be treacherous in wet weather. Fairways in general is ok patchy in some places. Interesting course overall.
Excellent Course
Highly recomend playing this course, very interesting on a windy day
Didn’t play
I can’t find anything on Golf now that states carrying only and when we got there we saw that everyone was carrying and had this confirmed on calling the clubhouse. We only had our trolleys and looking at our bodies and the terrain we knew this was unmanageable and they agreed to cancel.
Is it possible that such details could be put on golf now?
Course with very good views
A very friendly and welcoming golf course. Lots of dog walkers, most stay away from fairways and greens.
Great course!
great condition, challenging course, wonderful views!
Great course!
Royston is a challenging course, with some tricky holes, and windy, with great views!
Great course!
very good value, great condition, wonderful views, hilly!
Excellent
Love the rough with the course gives it a special character. The greens immaculate. Definitely playing again. Get ready for a hilly walk but loved it.
Testing course
Excellent greens. Difficult approaches to greens on several holes with bunkers and valleys.
Royston golf club suprises me
Heathland course. With very undulating fairways.extreme slopes up and down .so beware. Greens in excellent condition tee boxes the same . If you go off fairway you are in long grass .This can be a problem especially as there is not much in the way of working out the distance the ball has covered.
There are also ramblers about as it’s on public land So be careful .Overall though a change from parkland courses .Only negative really is that the clubhouse is a distance from the first tee (400 yards)and there is actually an unconnected sports bar by the 1st tee .Very odd .Overall a very good course and a good physical workout over the hills and dales .
Challenging but excellent course
Great course in excellent condition. Greens were fantastic, very fast but true. Rough was unforgiving so best to keep to the fairways.
Only negative was lack of sand in green side bunkers, and what sand that was there was shallow and poor quality.
Overall a very enjoyable afternoon.
Wouldn’t go back
The pro shop were really helpful and friendly. The overall condition of the course is good and the greens are in nice condition and quite fast.
As you would expect from a heathland course it’s pretty featureless and a bit boring.
Some holes were very challenging given the wind. They have a couple of lovely par 3’s and the majority of the holes you have to be pretty accurate to get (and stay) on the green as it’s so fast.
Overall a good course, just not for me, I prefer a course with features like woodland and water etc not just fairways and rough. I got it for a ‘hot deal’ but I wouldn’t pay full price for it, as it is definitely overpriced compared to others.
Would definitely make sure you get a buggy unless you like pushing your trolley uphill and are fit as this could quite easily add an hour on to your normal play time
Great round
Only spoiled by kids running on the fairways but it was a beautiful day so lots of walkers.
