Jones at Lyman Orchards Golf Club
About
Lyman Orchards in Middlefield is a favorite spot for families because of the nearly 100 varieties of pick-your-own fruit, but it's popular with golfers as well, boasting both a Robert Trent Jones-designed course and one designed by Gary Player. There is also the Apple Nine Course. Situated along the banks of the Connecticut River, the orchards provide the perfect setting for a round of golf. The Jones Course has a diverse terrain, offering dramatically rolling hills on the front nine and a back nine that is routed through woodlands and wetlands. Water comes into play on a total of seven holes on the back and there are more than 40 bunkers strategically placed along the severely sloped greens. Accurate drives and irons will be generously rewarded but it's not overly punishing for high handicappers.

First, par-4, 435 yards: A classic Trent Jones par-4 that has to be one of the greatest opening holes in Connecticut. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Second, par-3, 197: This is a relatively small target to hit with a mid-iron or longer club. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024

Another view of the second green from its left side, showing its large fall-off. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Six, par-4, 366: A fairly tough approach to a hilltop green, which has the glassiest putting surface on the entire course. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Eight, par-4, 391: This mid-length par-4 concludes on a tricky green complex, seen here in the late-afternoon shadows. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Nine: par-5, 572: A first-rate five-par concludes the front side. Both fairway and green are guarded with large bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024

Four is a burly, well-bunkered par-5 of 571. Your tee shot should avoid this trap. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022
-
Six is among my favorite short par-4s anywhere, playing uphill to this heavily pitched green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022
-
Seven, a par-3 of 197, plays straight uphill to a tight target. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022

The ninth green, seen here from some 100 yards or so away behind a fairway trap, is narrow and well-bunkered. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022

The Overlook: from one of the practice putting greens, you’ll have this view of the tenth and eighteenth fairways, with a large pond dividing them. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022

Down on the tenth green itself, the same large pond forms a backdrop. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022

Ten, par-4, 412. A classic risk-reward hole with aesthetics to match its playability. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021

13, par-4, 390. A scenic view from the adjacent twelfth hole. Countless golf balls, including some of mine, have found these waters. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021

14, par-4, 407. You’ll need an accurate drive and approach to find this raised green in regulation. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021

15, par-4, 402. Opinions will vary, but I like this as the best hole on the back nine. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021

A three-par of 180, this hole looks great in the late afternoon shadows. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
This fine closing hole spans 567 yards and demands a careful pitch to hold its green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
Lyman’s finishing hole stretches 567 yards from tee to green. Hazards are plentiful along the way. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021
-
The third hole. Dogleg right, 408. Both drive and second shot must be hit with precision. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021
-
The sixth green rises well above the fairway, and putting its severely sloping green can be nerve-wracking. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021

Hole ten: par-4, 412. Cut the corner of this dogleg left at your own risk. It promises to be an adventure. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021

Sixteen, a 428-yard par four, will test your mettle from tee to cup. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021

Too slow
Took 3 hours to do 9 holes but even after complaining about the slow group ahead of us at the turn, we never saw the ranger. I actually quit playing after the 12th hole. Wasted my money and just had an aggravating round.
Beautiful Course
This course was very well maintained but somewhat wet due to recent rain which made for slow greens. It was pretty busy the day we went but my friend and I got teamed up with two very nice gentlemen. Groups playing ahead and behind us were very respectful. The course is a bit narrow but did not have leaves covering the fairways which is difficult this time of year. I would definitely play here again.
Solid and fair course.
Played on 10/10. Rough was very high, but that happens sometimes on Mondays. They were trying to mow but it was wet from heavy Sunday rain. Cart part only was tough, made searching for balls and bringing clubs difficult. I liked the layout, it was fair if you hit it straight, and a lot of green side bunkers. Bunkers were packed hard from the rain too. The staff was very helpful and friendly.
never playing here again
Won't be playing here again, no matter how beautiful the courses are.
The rangers like to shame players into playing faster, instead of being courteous and actually helping. Had a ranger tell us we were playing too slow, when we had already closed a 2 hole gap into a one hole gap by the 5th hole. Perhaps if there is a 2 hole gap in front of a foursome going out, you would at least let them hit their second shot before sending off the next four behind them. 4 guys played the front nine in less than 2 hours, not sure how that is considered slow play, especially on a day that was 90+ degrees with high humidity. Then he sat on the tee box at ten, insulted us, drove away shaking his head after he caused us to hit 4 bad shots while he sat there glaring at us with his arms folded across his chest, like we were a group of children. We went to 11 and waited for the group in front of us to tee off. Again, not sure how this is considered slow play.
Also, the golf pro won't return your phone calls when you call to tell him how bad your experience was, so there's that. Guess they don't care about player experiences, only collecting greens fees. The rangers are a direct reflection of the course pro, I believe his name is Mr Valk, but I don't know for sure because he wouldn't call me back.
This is supposed to be a gentleman's game. Not so at Lyman Orchards Golf Club based on my experience.
Oh, and I asked when I was paying for the round if they sold cigars, was told no. Grabbing a soda afterwards, saw them for sale about twenty feet from where I was told 'no, we don't sell cigars'.
good walking course
different tee boxes for your level of play
not to many flat putts
it was a hot day plenty off water on course
Great course, great conditions, bad starter
The course was great! They had an outing in the morning, a friend and I got there to play in the afternoon and when we booked there were a lot of open tee times, and as we drove up there wasn't a lot of people there (mostly due to the outing.) The first 9 flew by, we're late 20's guys, mid handicappers, so we were done in about an hour and 45 minutes.
There was a ranger circling who should have been aware of our scorching pace, however this did not stop them from putting out a threesome and a twosome of ladies who couldn't reach a par 3 with a driver on 10! This was extremely frustrating. Just start them off of 1! Why do you throw them out on 10? Our 3-3.5 hour round quickly turned into a 5 hour round. Kind of a bummer. the course was sweet, liked everything about it, I just hated that decision from the clubhouse.
NEVER AGAIN !!!!
Let me start by saying, I LOVE this course. I've played it 500+ times. I learned to play golf on this course. The last time I played it was about 7 or 8 years ago. After that round I swore I wouldn't play it again. But I did. A couple weeks ago, I decided to give it another try to see if my frustration from 7 years ago would repeat. It did.
Here's my frustration....
The course Ranger insists on bothering the golfers about keeping up with Lyman's rate of play policy.
Hey, if I'm holding up the group behind me, then you can say something. But if I've got 1to 2 holes open behind me --- leave me alone and let me enjoy my round.
I WILL NEVER play this course again!!
And that's a real shame because I really love the course. The course itself was in great shape. But I won't go back because I don't want to be harassed when I'm trying to enjoy myself.
Good value
Great value for the money. Course condition was great. Some of the pin placements were gimmicky but overall a great round. The course offers a little bit of everything.
Nice Course
Played with a friend. Starter matched us with a third. After two holes a single arrived we asked him to join but he wanted to play through. We let him go. Caught him on the back nine because a foursome would not let him through. Lyman can do a better job with this.
Greens were very good. Semi-fast and true. But one worker was pumping air into the greens to soften them and another was two holes away rolling them. What?
Traps were below average, basically hard red dirt/sand and rocks. Tees and fairways fine. The course is a challenge. Food was very good after the round.
Beautiful day, slow play
We hit perfect weather and 4 of us met from Bristol, Boston, Worcester and Manchester, NH. before going to Mohegan. The course was challenging, fast greens, fairly well kept. Played the front in 2hrs and 10 mins. The back took 2hrs 35mins and apparently some were started on the back. 3-1/2 - 4 star rating is appropriate but hopefully they will do something about the slow play.
Exceptional
Course is nicely maintained. Greens are perfect. Fairways couldn't be better.
Too Long of a Round
With a 6:12 a.m. tee time on a Sunday morning I was hoping for an average time of play of 4:00 hours for 18 holes...it took 4 hours and 40 minutes. No ranger in sight to keep the groups ahead of us honest. I guess that's too early for them too!
Rough rough
The rough was ridiculously deep. If you hit into the rough, chances were you could not find your ball. The grass was so tall it had gone to seed! We averaged a lost ball per hole. This made for a frustrating round that was not fun. And the bunkers are really gravel pits. There is no soft sand so it became dangerous for your hands. I've played here many times before and never had this kind of experience. Doubt I will play here again.
Always a favorite
The course was in very good shape.
Aeration notification
Played Lyman many times and while sometimes play is slow, it's been an overall good experience. My only criticism is their website never tells you when the course has been aerated. The rough, fairways and greens were all recently done. Would like to know before hand what to expect and then weight the overall value before booking tee time.
Very enjoyable round
This is a very enjoyable parkland course, not overly penal, with interesting elevation changes, and beautiful treelined fairways. The greens are moderately sized with fair contours, and well placed bunkers. Its a bit of a drive for me, but well worth the trip. The greens had been recently aerated, but the staff warned us of this fact and discounted the fees. I respect their efforts to support the greens with this important maintenance and to maintain player good will.
beware, aerated greens, with not enough sand,
no chance for scouring, hole's in greens too deep. they should of notified and discounted, make's it hard to return any time soon. sorry for the bad review, but they could of warned us.
Beautiful Course & very Friendly staff
The course has a historic feel while being beautiful and challenging. The staff are very accommodating and the club house is classy and engaging. Played the Jones course and had an overall fantastic experience from the parking lot to the 19th hole - slightly remote but well worth the time!
Fun and challenging
Nice course layout. Overall conditions are very good. Played with some very nice people. The group in front was very slow. A few holes open in front of them. Would have helped if they could have been encouraged to keep up. 5+ hours is a long round
