Jones at Lyman Orchards Golf Club
About
Lyman Orchards in Middlefield is a favorite spot for families because of the nearly 100 varieties of pick-your-own fruit, but it's popular with golfers as well, boasting both a Robert Trent Jones-designed course and one designed by Gary Player. There is also the Apple Nine Course. Situated along the banks of the Connecticut River, the orchards provide the perfect setting for a round of golf. The Jones Course has a diverse terrain, offering dramatically rolling hills on the front nine and a back nine that is routed through woodlands and wetlands. Water comes into play on a total of seven holes on the back and there are more than 40 bunkers strategically placed along the severely sloped greens. Accurate drives and irons will be generously rewarded but it's not overly punishing for high handicappers.

First, par-4, 435 yards: A classic Trent Jones par-4 that has to be one of the greatest opening holes in Connecticut. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Second, par-3, 197: This is a relatively small target to hit with a mid-iron or longer club. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Another view of the second green from its left side, showing its large fall-off. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Six, par-4, 366: A fairly tough approach to a hilltop green, which has the glassiest putting surface on the entire course. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Eight, par-4, 391: This mid-length par-4 concludes on a tricky green complex, seen here in the late-afternoon shadows. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Nine: par-5, 572: A first-rate five-par concludes the front side. Both fairway and green are guarded with large bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Four is a burly, well-bunkered par-5 of 571. Your tee shot should avoid this trap. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022
-
Six is among my favorite short par-4s anywhere, playing uphill to this heavily pitched green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022
-
Seven, a par-3 of 197, plays straight uphill to a tight target. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022
-
The ninth green, seen here from some 100 yards or so away behind a fairway trap, is narrow and well-bunkered. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022

The Overlook: from one of the practice putting greens, you’ll have this view of the tenth and eighteenth fairways, with a large pond dividing them. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022

Down on the tenth green itself, the same large pond forms a backdrop. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022

Soooo close to an ace on hole #2!!! Photo submitted by u241990994 on 02/24/2022

Ten, par-4, 412. A classic risk-reward hole with aesthetics to match its playability. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
13, par-4, 390. A scenic view from the adjacent twelfth hole. Countless golf balls, including some of mine, have found these waters. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
14, par-4, 407. You’ll need an accurate drive and approach to find this raised green in regulation. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
15, par-4, 402. Opinions will vary, but I like this as the best hole on the back nine. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
A three-par of 180, this hole looks great in the late afternoon shadows. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
This fine closing hole spans 567 yards and demands a careful pitch to hold its green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
Lyman’s finishing hole stretches 567 yards from tee to green. Hazards are plentiful along the way. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021
-
The third hole. Dogleg right, 408. Both drive and second shot must be hit with precision. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021
-
The sixth green rises well above the fairway, and putting its severely sloping green can be nerve-wracking. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021
-
Hole ten: par-4, 412. Cut the corner of this dogleg left at your own risk. It promises to be an adventure. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021
-
Sixteen, a 428-yard par four, will test your mettle from tee to cup. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021

A view toward the Lyman-Jones 18th fairway to its perched green. The clubhouse lies above and behind it. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021

JOnes Course
Course was in great shape....We were able to play in 4 hours with no hold up.
Markers
Course was in great shape, enjoyed the round. Only complaint is there were no markers above ground on the course. Found myself guessing the distance of most shots.
Great course
Very well maintained, for the quality of the course $40 including a cart for 18 holes can't be beat
Recipie for success
They know how to grow great apples and bake amazing pies. They took this know how and put it into two great tracks. I prefer the Jones course but the Player offers some scenic views of central CT. Our foursome played on Good Friday along with everyone else who had the day off from work and we still managed to play a 4-1/2 hour round. Highly recommend either Lyman course and Golfnow. Go Play!
No Leaves
The grounds crew were on top of the leaf situation. we had no issues with this fall round. Staff was friendly and courteous.
good shape
Got a great deal on the price for the course. Worth the 40 min drive
Great condition despite no recent rainfall in area
Beautiful scenario and grounds. Rough was not too nasty, greens were consistent and well maintained, hardly any bad grounds to be seen even under trees. Pleasant layout, try the black or blue tees which totally changes the personality of the course or play the whites for bogey golf with fun.
too much money for shape of course
The greens were slow. Not what Lymans used to be. Some greens had dead spots. For $69. The course should be in better shape.
Good Course for the price
Good course for the price. Some greens definitely needed attention, and alot of dead grass for some reason. Other then that, it was a fair course.
The course is ok
The two problems are --if your ball is not in the fairway and rolls in the second cut , (that was mowed to app.2") you can't find your ball. Because the earth under the evenly mowed grass is not even, it's like an egg crate so the ball sets down in and you can't find your ball unless your standing on top of it .even when 4 guys seen exactly were the ball landed . And this leads to lost balls and slow play.
Second - while we were putting the greens keeper would not stop mowing the fring around the putting green, (never seen anything like this from a course maintenance employee this is crazy.)
Course is in rough shape.
The greens and tee boxes are either diseased or worn down. Some greens are almost unplayable especially 2nd and 17th greens. Luckily we played it for a discount rate (later in the day) but still feel like we paid too much. Would be really upset if I paid full price (morning rate is $72 on weekends) to play the course which is over priced to begin with. The greens keeper should be ashamed of himself. Not going back for awhile!
Great Track, Disappointing Condition
This course has a great track however the areas around the greens and some greens were burnt out and contained no grass. Disappointing condition for a course of this reputation to have dead spots in the middle of the golfing season.
Course is beat up
The course has went downhill the past couple of years
Nice layout. Usually great conditions.
With the exception of this time I just played, the course is usually in great shape. Many of the greens had large bare patches of dirt today. Very disappointed. Not sure what's going on, but I hope they can get them back to usual shape. Otherwise, the fairways, rough, tee boxes were in good shape.
Course in good shape despite recent heavy rains
Lyman Orchards - Jones Course is always a favorite of mine in central CT. Heavy June rains have slowed the greens and softened the low lying areas on the back nine, but the course is still in excellent condition. We played as a twosome and breezed around in about 3 1/2 hours - practically unheard of on a Saturday in July (maybe hot weather turned others away). Staff was very friendly. I'll definitely be back.
Red tees offer little advantage. Not a good couples track.
The course has not been updated to incorporate real ladies tees. I liked the course but my female friend who is an average player struggled with the distance from the red tees.
Good Course
The course has a good combination of easy, intermediate and hard holes. Played only the front 9 of Jones course since the back 9 was flooded. Good thing they let us out in the front 9 of the Player course.
Greens were over grown and very sandy
I booked 18 holes on Saturday, when I checked in on Sunday they stated the back 9 was unplayable. There should not be 18 holes tee times available if they course is not playable. Staff was freindly but getting ready for 18, only to be told the back 9 was closed leaves a bad taste in one's mouth.
Course is open
The putting green was not cut thin so hole to hole it was faster or slower and bumpy putting

Thank you Patchz for your comments! We are glad you had a great time on Good Friday. The golf course is really shaping up for the 2014 season, we'd love to have you come out again soon.
