Jones at Lyman Orchards Golf Club
About
Lyman Orchards in Middlefield is a favorite spot for families because of the nearly 100 varieties of pick-your-own fruit, but it's popular with golfers as well, boasting both a Robert Trent Jones-designed course and one designed by Gary Player. There is also the Apple Nine Course. Situated along the banks of the Connecticut River, the orchards provide the perfect setting for a round of golf. The Jones Course has a diverse terrain, offering dramatically rolling hills on the front nine and a back nine that is routed through woodlands and wetlands. Water comes into play on a total of seven holes on the back and there are more than 40 bunkers strategically placed along the severely sloped greens. Accurate drives and irons will be generously rewarded but it's not overly punishing for high handicappers.

First, par-4, 435 yards: A classic Trent Jones par-4 that has to be one of the greatest opening holes in Connecticut. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Second, par-3, 197: This is a relatively small target to hit with a mid-iron or longer club. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Another view of the second green from its left side, showing its large fall-off. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Six, par-4, 366: A fairly tough approach to a hilltop green, which has the glassiest putting surface on the entire course. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Eight, par-4, 391: This mid-length par-4 concludes on a tricky green complex, seen here in the late-afternoon shadows. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Nine: par-5, 572: A first-rate five-par concludes the front side. Both fairway and green are guarded with large bunkers. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/18/2024
-
Four is a burly, well-bunkered par-5 of 571. Your tee shot should avoid this trap. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022
-
Six is among my favorite short par-4s anywhere, playing uphill to this heavily pitched green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022
-
Seven, a par-3 of 197, plays straight uphill to a tight target. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022
-
The ninth green, seen here from some 100 yards or so away behind a fairway trap, is narrow and well-bunkered. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022

The Overlook: from one of the practice putting greens, you’ll have this view of the tenth and eighteenth fairways, with a large pond dividing them. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022

Down on the tenth green itself, the same large pond forms a backdrop. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/16/2022

Ten, par-4, 412. A classic risk-reward hole with aesthetics to match its playability. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
13, par-4, 390. A scenic view from the adjacent twelfth hole. Countless golf balls, including some of mine, have found these waters. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
14, par-4, 407. You’ll need an accurate drive and approach to find this raised green in regulation. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
15, par-4, 402. Opinions will vary, but I like this as the best hole on the back nine. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
A three-par of 180, this hole looks great in the late afternoon shadows. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
This fine closing hole spans 567 yards and demands a careful pitch to hold its green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 11/07/2021
-
Lyman’s finishing hole stretches 567 yards from tee to green. Hazards are plentiful along the way. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021
-
The third hole. Dogleg right, 408. Both drive and second shot must be hit with precision. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021
-
The sixth green rises well above the fairway, and putting its severely sloping green can be nerve-wracking. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021
-
Hole ten: par-4, 412. Cut the corner of this dogleg left at your own risk. It promises to be an adventure. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021
-
Sixteen, a 428-yard par four, will test your mettle from tee to cup. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 07/07/2021

Slow back nine
Played here many times and the course is always in excellent shape. Today however it took almost 3 hrs to play the back nine. There were 4 groups on the 10th hole. I know the ranger was trying to do something about it but I also know that you do not want to lose customers. What about the customers behind.?There were at least 3 holes open in front of that slow group and not once did I see them asked to be moved up. I know the pro should be able to do this. As for the Philly Cheesesteak it was awful. The beef was as tough as shoe leather.
Great experience
The course was in excellent condition and played in 4hrs 10min Despite some slow play (many twosomes). Rangers did a good job in patrolling.
Played both course - both were excellent and different.
Great Layout
Layout is excelllent. Locale is excellent with high quality staff.
I would certainly play again for the price. I would have been disappointed if I had payed full freight.
Conditions were OK. The tees were pretty beat on the par threes, and the course had not been cleaned up in a bit.
It was the end of the day, but garbage cans were overflowing, tee boxes were covered in divots.
It is clear that the fellow player is not doing there part. Divots just off the green, unrepaired ball marks, unraked bunkers, and just sloppy golfsmanship was evident.
I'll play it again, and hope that what I saw was an aberration.
Rough rough
A five hour round is frustrating on any course any day of the week. The rough was so high which made finding balls was extremely difficult. The rough did factor into the pace of play for sure. Additionally, there was a ranger who was out a visible yet the group in front of us had a hole opened in front of them but nothing was done to have them pick it up. Not sure what the function of a ranger is then.
Slow
Teed off at 3 o'clock finished in the dark 5 1/2 hours never saw a Ranger could've been handled a lot better by The staff the group in front of us was drinking heavily and leaving the beer cans for us to pick up three open holes The staff the group in front of us was drinking heavily and leaving the beer cans for us to pick up three open hole in front of them and we never saw a ranger
Decent for the money
The bunkers are hard pan, unplayable. Greens were slow. The rest of the course was in good condition and the layout is fun.
A serious treat
Had a work training in this area and decided to bring the clubs with a few co workers and I'm glad we did. Got a 6:12pm tee time off the app for $38 but we got out at 4:30pm so we decided to warm up on the 9 hole course before and this was the nicest par 3 course I had ever see and the practice facility was gorgeous. The jones course was next and it did not disappoint. 4 sets of tees for all abilities and the course was in perfect shape!! Difficult but not to hard for your average golfer and just a gorgeous landscape. This is one of my all time favorite courses and I'm just upset that I can't live closer to this course. I will be going to more trainings just to be able to play this course.
putting
the greens were in good shape and were fair - but they are very contoured and tough
Another ride around the jones course
I took advantage of a 50% off hot deals special so I played 18 with a cart for $33.75 on a beautiful sunday.
I was here about a week ago and I enjoyed this round even more than the last one. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating when I showed up to play as a single. The course is in absolutely great condition. These are my new favorite greens to putt on. They roll decently fast and true. Best greens I have played on with the tradition of Wallingford being right there with these. The Rough is really thick and penalizing. This courses true defense. I have no complaints about it though other than it being hard to find your ball when your in it. So keep a good eye on your tee shots! Pace of play was a usual sunday. A lot of people on the course but I was able to skip a few groups and pair up on the 9th tee with a 3-some. If you get a chance to play here on a good golfnow deal I highly recommend this course!! A little pricey otherwise.....
Disappointed
Course was in horrible shape. If you hit it in the rough it's imposdible to find your ball. I personally like challenging toughs but when you have 8 sets of eyes on where it landed and still can't find it until your hovering over theirs a problem. Also greens were super slow and some in disrepair with bare spots. Play was extremely slow as to where we couldn't even get our 18 holes in and left at 14th. 4.5hrs. I would wait to go back next year to give them a second chance and clean up the course. Way overpriced for condition this year
Nice view great layout
Great layout and undulating greens. We played in the fall, the greens recently had "little lines" instead of aeration holes. The machine made lines in the green which affected putting, otherwise in great shape.
great fall golf
Have played here since it opened. Great design, allways look forward to playing the Jones course.
Conditions of course
I couldn't believe the amount of leaves left on the course (in the rough as well as the fairway) for the price I paid. It slowed play tremendously.
Much Better...
In the past, I've always felt the staff was a little unaccommodating, course overplayed, conditions bad, pace of play horrid, and way overpriced. That was not at all the case this past weekend. I golfed on a Sunday, and albeit crowded, it was a pleasure to play and saw very noticeable changes from staff to course condition.
Great day
2nd time playing the course and was very pleased again. Great layout with a mlx of tough and fair holes
Top public course in the area
The Jones course is a classic. There is plenty of challenge from the back tees but very playable from the whites. I guess a good review would be tough but fair which you don't find very often. The staff is awesome! It is our "go to" course and very reasonably priced during the week. The weekends can get very crowded. Overall, it is a pleasure to play and we never tire of it. Enjoy.
Jones course
We have a twosome and played 18 holes in 3hrs 45 min. Course condition was impeccable . Very nice place for the $$
a great place to play golf.
One of the better kept Golf courses in the state. The staff are very friendly and the food is pretty good as well.
Another Long Day at Lyman
Forgot I played the Player course last September and also had a 5 hour round, The player assistant assured us he warned the group ahead of slow play--but obviously he could do nothing about it---5 hours+ is not an enjoyable day. Lyman is off my radar for a long time.
On the Right Track !!!
Course is under a new superintendent who is making the conditions much better than last couple of years... I know 2 members who quit due to conditions and now want to rejoin as it has improved so much,
I shot 81 w 11 pars, 2 doubles, 1 3 putt... so ok.
The rough was deep as it growing out for health reasons so maybe a first cut would be fair, but they are on track to a MUCH improved facility.!!!
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed in your experience. Our rough is certainly healthy, and our turf crew is working over time to keep up with its length. Adding a first cut of rough has greatly helped with this issue. We are also concerned about your pace of play as that is a priority for us to improve. We have already implemented changes to our scheduling of Marshals and we hope to see you back at Lyman Orchards soon!
