Royal Hawaiian Golf Club
About
Nestled at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains in Oahu, Royal Hawaiian Golf Club enjoys a stunning tropical setting framed by ancient jungle trees that climb to more than 100 feet tall. The father-and-son team of Pete and Perry Dye designed the course. There are many telltale signs that this is a Dye course, from the many elevation changes to the varied bunker styles that are utilized throughout. The round begins with stunning views as you plunge downhill into the Maunawili Valley. There are more trees and narrower fairways on the front nine, contrasting nicely with the wide-open back nine. Royal Hawaiian Golf Club's back plays towards the mouth of the valley, offering a view of the mountains and sparkling blue Pacific waters in the distance. It's not an overly punishing golf course but locals and visitors alike have called it the toughest and most scenic course you'll find on Oahu.

Good features, muddy fairways, course partially closed.
Good: interesting holes, challenging undulating greens, nice scenery, Driving range & practice area greatly improved from before.
Bad: Only allowed to play back 9; front 9 was closed due to green renovations. We were never forewarned before purchasing the green fees which was unfair. Fairways were very muddy although it was sunny; consequently no roll and very messy. Some greens were in very poor shape with weeds....at least management is addressing this with the green renovations. Hopefully better in a couple of months.
Not worth the money
This course might be alright in a years time but right now it is in terrible condition for the price. Beautiful and challenging location but wet and muddy. Poor drainage. Weeds on the greens and had the play the back 9 twice because the front is closed. Spend your money elsewhere
FRONT NINE CLOSED and a MUD PIT
The front nine is closed for "re-doing the greens". Back nine greens are over grown with weeds that are nicely mowed…
It has obviously been raining and the course was soaked. Not a dry lie all day. They should not allow play when it's that bad.
We appreciated that it was open on Christmas day so we could play but we were doubly bummed with the outturn.
Sorry to complain for a $25 green fee but something should have been posted about the conditions and only half open.
Difficult course for a beginner.
One of the 9's was closed but we played the back nine twice. Although it rained--not very hard- the course was well-maintained but still had muddy spots.
Beautiful Course but...
Royal Hawaiian is my favorite Oahu course. I play there 3-4 times / mo. Great layout! The course is in very good condition EXCEPT for the greens. An invasive weed has taken over 75% of the greens. As a result, these greens have been heavily sanded as they try to convert over to a new grass variety. . The problem first appeared in JUN 2014 and has gotten much worse since then. It may take a few months before these greens are back to normal. If you can get a discount rate, the course is well worth playing.
the green is the worst i have ever seen
the fairway is dood...the course is kind confusing, we have to drive back and forth to find tee box.
the green is the worst i have ever seen....
Bunkers, hills, and great views
Typical Dye course with plenty of elevation change and not many flat lies. The mountain and jungle views are excellent and the course presents you with a lot of interesting shots, including plenty of can-I-get-over-the-x sorts of positions. A lot of fun and not to be missed if you're visiting. Great facilities and service, too. This is probably the all-around best course I've played on Oahu.
Great course!
First off this course is gorgeous with amazing views and hole setups. The YouTube video on this course doesn't do it justice. Very challenging course, but not overwhelming. If you aim for the 150 stick every time you will be fine. First time playing this course and only shot a few strokes over par while doing that gameplan. Take lots of pictures and you MUST play this course if you visit Oahu.
This the most beautiful and interesting course I've ever played.
This golf course is so breath taking you could just drive around eighteen holes and not hit a golf ball and feel like you got your money's worth. Somewhat challenging but well maintained and worth every penny we spent to play here. Loved this golf course and the staff.
Horrible conditions for price
The practice facility had no balls and the greens were sandy. The food was very poor and the customer service was poor. All of the greens were in horrible condition and sandy . It was nearly impossible to putt accurately. The scenery was beautiful, but the conditions took away feom the experience. Anything this price should be in pristine conditions
A must play in Oahu
Fabulous course with all the challenges golf has to offer. The people working there were absolutely professional & cordial - they were actually both from Seattle. Course forces the golfer to put premium on keeping the ball in play primarily.
Wow
This property is awesome and the views spectacular, but I paid 155.00 dollars for 30.00 dollar round the greens are the worst I have ever played on the 8th hole was closed I'm not sure how there still open.
Not bad...
Got a great deal thru golfnow. Which was fortunate as the 'regular' rate would have been very over priced. Very tight course. Played from the tips and didn't hit a single driver. 8th hole was closed so an extra par 3 was used. Lots of up/down and blind shots which I'm not keen on but if you like that kind of challenge... Course conditions were ok. Greens and fairways could both use some TLC but not bad overall. Staff was very friendly.
Amazing golf course
The staff was very friendly and gave us suggestions on how to play the course which were very helpful. The course has amazing views, right out of the Jurassic Park movie. Even if you lose a lot of balls the scenery makes it worth it. The course is impossible if you don't hit your drives in play, especially on the front side, this is not a resort course! I read that this course and nearby Ko'olau suggest 1 golf ball for each stroke in your handicap. A low handicap player will not lose many balls but players who cannot not hit it straight of the tee will lose a lot of balls. The landing areas are tight areas but not unfair. The course was soft from the rains etc, so it was a little forgiving. Greens were a little slow but rolled smooth. Fairways were good throughout the course. Some rough areas on a couple of greens probably due to too much moisture. This will be the first course I will play when I come back to Oahu.
Very good course
It is a great and difficult course. Front nine is in forest and narrow. Many blind shot. Back nine is open and on the hill. Quite different flavor. Condition is good. All Par3 are impressive.
Challenging
My friend and I have been waiting 2 years to play this course as it was not available when we were here last time. We were not disappointed . It isn't overly long (we played off the blue tees) but you must know your yardage and be able to hit straight. It is not for the" hacker". I am a single figure golfer and lost 4 balls. Bloody hooks!! Although one was a miss reading of the yardage on the card, stupid mistake by me. My friend lost 9. But they give 6 for free. It was the most picturesque course I have played and a must for any good golfer. You MUST have a cart.Too far between green and tee to walk.
A great course
Beautiful scenery
Views are amazing. Holes are challenging. Birdies to be made as well as triple bogies. All is good because just look up and around.
Beautiful course
I like this course challenge and well maintained. Great view, too
Good course
Tough but in really good shape when I played. Nice forest like course, somewhat different than the other courses on the island
