Nestled at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains in Oahu, Royal Hawaiian Golf Club enjoys a stunning tropical setting framed by ancient jungle trees that climb to more than 100 feet tall. The father-and-son team of Pete and Perry Dye designed the course. There are many telltale signs that this is a Dye course, from the many elevation changes to the varied bunker styles that are utilized throughout. The round begins with stunning views as you plunge downhill into the Maunawili Valley. There are more trees and narrower fairways on the front nine, contrasting nicely with the wide-open back nine. Royal Hawaiian Golf Club's back plays towards the mouth of the valley, offering a view of the mountains and sparkling blue Pacific waters in the distance. It's not an overly punishing golf course but locals and visitors alike have called it the toughest and most scenic course you'll find on Oahu.

This course is challenging.

it's one my favoriate golf course, made me challenged.
Each hole have a ravine in the fairway, both side are hazard, narrow and up and down hill, no flat area in fairway.
In thesedays, they are doing lots of renovation, and arranged the course. Green condition is best, wedge is fine and clear.

Like playing in a rainforest

Great course. Hard to believe they carved this out of the jungle. You are rewarded for good shots and pay the price for bad ones. Bring extra balls since if you don't keep it in the fairway chances are you won't find your ball. They have been doing a lot of renovation to the course and I look forward to the many positive changes I see taking place. It is a beautiful and peaceful place. Would be nice to have a bar serving liquor and food. Right now just a snack bar with beer and soda.

spectacular course but know your distances

the views at the course are beautiful: the first nine goes along the hillside, then the back nine goes into the rainforest. in order to have a good score, you need to know the distances of each of your clubs: there are so many places you can get into trouble, but you can be safe without sacrificing your score. or you can hit for distance, and can lose a lot of balls. the fairways are undulating and some of the sand traps are amazing craters.

there is also a par 3 [#11] that mimics Sawgrass #17. Pete Dye designed both courses.

there is on-going course improvements: there are some new greens and tees being added; presently there is no driving range; and the course card is a xerox of the old card [there is no helpful layout image], making some of the blind shots even harder.

CHALLENGING, DEMANDS ACCURATE SHOTS, COURSE IN GOOD CONDITIONS

Beautiful course "shaped in the mountain", challenging due to narrow and slopy course with small greens. Very well maintained. Friendly staff. Certain holes are currently going under re-shaping that promisses further joy for the challenging golfer. No restaurant but a snack point with friendly service for stopping by at start and after first 9 holes when playing in the afternoons (snack closes at 4:30 pm) A beautiful 11th par 3. A course for somenone looking for Hawaiian inland mountain scenary and challenging golf. My wife and I won't miss it on our next holidays in Hawaii.

The New Luana Hills!

Luana Hills was purchased by Pacific Links Intl and renamed to Royal Hawaiian. Although the course is undergoing a lot of renovation they have done a great job at keeping it open, playable and fun. I can't wait to see this beautiful course when all is complete.

Beautiful scenery

There was some course construction going on but they have an extra hole on the course so we were still able to get in 18. Quite a challenging course but it's such a fun challenge especially with such beautiful mountain views. Even living in Hawaii I admired the beauty of this course. Best deal in my opinion.

Driver or 3?

Almost every hole has you questioning if you should drive, or play it safe. At every tee box, the sight gives you the yardage to "Ravine". Bring lots of balls, and have fun with it! This course has you reaching for your camera as much as the next club. Truly, beautiful. The cart path on the back nine is like a trip through Jurassic Park. We saw more wild boar than golf carts! There was some improvement construction going on, but don't be deterred. If you have limited golf time on vacation, this would be the must golf course. Highly recommend this course. The cart guys meet you at the parking lot, and take good care of you. Pro shop guys were very helpful too. If you want beer, bring your own cooler. They will ice down beer in a plastic bag otherwise. Like all four courses I golfed on this trip, No beverage carts! Must not be the thing at Honolulu courses.

It is hard to find. The address on the tee time confirmation was wrong and my GPS took me to the wrong place.

Extraordinarily beautiful / Extremely challenging

Course in transition. Lots of construction going on as golf is play. Greens were just sanded and aerated so difficult to assess quality. I had fun anyway.

Awesome value

The course is undergoing a revitalization at this time however, what they have is already great. Very challenging but fair. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I would recommend to anyone.

Very beautiful Golf Course

Our second round of the year and this course ate us up. But we had a great time, the greens were challenging and the fairways were in great condition. The front nine was nice and open but the back was where you need accuracy and be able to hit the ball straight.

The most beautiful scenic golf course on Oahu.

Royal Hawaiian is set in the highlands and valleys of the Koolau Mountains with the most spectacular views on Oahu. Parts of the course look as though you have gone back to Jurassic Park. The natural vegetation is magnificent.

Recently, under the new ownership and management, the staff and service has been wonderful. This time the service, such as bag pickup in the parking garage was not there and the staff was indifferent at best. The starter was not around and the cart barn seemed under-staffed.

The ownership is continuing to re-do several of the holes which is great. The fairways were in good condition, but quite a few of the greens were heavily pockmarked.

The course is filled with sloping fairways and greens as well as ravines, drop offs, and long carries. The white tees, this time, were set back to where the blues have most often been, making the round even tougher. But, that's golf...always a challenge.

Over-all, Royal Hawaiian is still my favorite course on Oahu. I love it.

The Front is Good, but the Back is Under Construction

I really enjoyed the front 9, but they did not tell me the back was undergoing major construction. Several holes were shortened, and 13 was closed with not alternate. Therefore, you cannot play a round of 18. When I said something to the starter at the end of the round, he just smiled and said oh well... Had I not gotten a great deal on GolfNow.com, I would have been really upset. Do NOT pay full price for greens fees at this course if you want to play 18 - or should I say 17.

Jurassic Park Island Green

One of the most beautiful courses we’ve played, with the setting in the mountains and jungle making views spectacular. Having said this, it is very challenging. Their version of the "Island Green" includes nothing but gnarly trees, shrubs and dense vegetation between tee & green! See pic. The course has lots of these ravine-like hazards crossing or parallel to fairways. With water hazards you usually have a look, with these if you go in, you don't even bother! Crazy! A beautiful course and location, you just need to understand going in ... you WILL lose balls! Great course to play our last round on! Well worth the trip!

Course is beautiful but still under construction

I would like to see improvement on the greens. The speed from green to green is not consistent. Hopefully after they are done renovating it will be perfect!

Not worth the price right now

Played in early February 2013, Great course played here before. But the course is clearly under construction and has very poor drainage on a lot of holes. In my opinion in the state that the course is in should be less than a hundred dollars untill the renovations are complete

Incredibly beautiful.

The landscape and views were awesome. The course was in good shape. It played about 6,200 from the blue tees. There was a little construction on a couple holes but no big deal. The course was challenging and you couldn't stray far from the fairway or green and not be in the jungle. My son and I had a great afternoon.

Jurassic Park

This course was probably the highlight of my stay in Hawaii. The course staff were super friendly and the course was challenging, but the sights and the setting make it all worth the trip. Between the 10th and 11th holes we saw a beautiful parrot sitting on the cart path. Unreal!!!!!!!!!

Challenging; Awesome Scenery

This is a challenging course. You can lose a few balls, but who cares - the scenery is amazing, especiall the back nine, just like in a pre-historic jungle! The course is in good condition too. We enjoy it tremendously every time, doesn't matter what the score is.
