Royal Hawaiian Golf Club
About
Nestled at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains in Oahu, Royal Hawaiian Golf Club enjoys a stunning tropical setting framed by ancient jungle trees that climb to more than 100 feet tall. The father-and-son team of Pete and Perry Dye designed the course. There are many telltale signs that this is a Dye course, from the many elevation changes to the varied bunker styles that are utilized throughout. The round begins with stunning views as you plunge downhill into the Maunawili Valley. There are more trees and narrower fairways on the front nine, contrasting nicely with the wide-open back nine. Royal Hawaiian Golf Club's back plays towards the mouth of the valley, offering a view of the mountains and sparkling blue Pacific waters in the distance. It's not an overly punishing golf course but locals and visitors alike have called it the toughest and most scenic course you'll find on Oahu.

Very Challenging!!!
2nd hardest course i have every played. Stop keeping my score after I lost 10 balls. You have to keep it on the fairway with jungle and trouble on both sides of the narrow fairways. Had a lot fun and the views was some of the best every! Staff is very good. Looking forward to playing again once construction is complete.
Testing course that will have you coming back for more.
There cannot be a more beautiful course in the world but the poor green conditions and dilapidated carts prevented it from being an unforgettable experience. The back 9 presented the greatest challenges where the location for the second shot on the long holes are critical. Don't rely on the yardage markers, couldn't figure out some of them.
Super mountain views.
We had the course to ourselves. Great rentals. Worth the drive from Waikiki.
Amazing golf course felt like you were in Jurassic Park
This golf course was in pretty good shape but the real treat was the views and surroundings what an amazing experience. Pretty challenging lots of blind shots and elevation swings but worth while golfing and would do it again when back in Hawaii. We played with my wife and sister so it was a long but very enjoyable round of golf
A beautiful course but a real ball eater
This is a wonderful course with extremely well maintained fairways and greens. The staff was friendly and helpful. The one drawback is that if you don’t hit every fairway and green, the ball is lost and all lost balls are treated as lateral water hazards.
Authentic Hawaii Golf
This course is unbelievable. The views are amazing and everything is luscious and green. You go deep into the jungle and feel as if you've got the entire course to yourself. A very fun course to play and a great value. We even received free transportation from Waikiki through HiGolfGuide. Our driver Eric was a nice young man and made the trip even more memorable for my wife and I. He was very knowledgeable and gave us some really interesting information about some of the hidden landmarks we passed along the way. Not an average driver but a true "Golf Guide." I would have to say that this is my favorite course on the island and it's exactly what golf in Hawaii should be. If you only had one round of golf to play while staying on Oahu play here!
This course was fantastic!
Besides the savings by booking on GolfNow.com, this course is a "must play" for anyone traveling to Oahu; it is really not that far out of Honolulu. Pay attention to the yardage markers at the tie boxes; the course plays similar to a desert course only in a jungle; ball position is important. Be wary of the Par 5 14th hole; being uphill, the length is deceiving. At mid-week, this is an under-played course. The two of us played 18 in 2 1/2 hours and the club let us re-play for $30. Great course, great value!
Mahalo!
Review of Royal Hawaiian Golf Course
Of all the courses I have played in Hawaii, this one is my favorite. It is "Dye-abolical," but I love the gorgeous "Mother Nature" around which it was designed. It is like playing in Jurassic Park! This course is on my "Top Five" list of all courses I have ever played anywhere.
Great layout, but needs work
This is a great track, it must have been a real pleasure to play when they kept it up. Unfortunately many green have trouble. The 17th green is almost gone. Bent grass greens usually have a 'hairy look' but I think they need to mow more often. It's is such a fun track that I still enjoy it, they are working on the driving range and the "10th hole" , this course has two number 10's, or is it two number 11's. and odd feature that either has you driving a long way from 9 to 10 or if the "pond" hole is in play a long drive from that green to the (12th?) In any case there is an extra hole stuck out there that you don't play. Again a great course, but needs attention.
Great Day of Golf!
This is a very beautiful course with spectacular scenery. They are rebuilding the driving range and Hole 10 but it doesn't really affect play. Even though it is a difficult course we had a really fun day. We will definitely come back to play.
BEAUTIFUL COURSE
COURSE IS BEING MADE MORE GOLFER FRIENDLY. HOLES ARE BEING SHORTENED AND LAY OUT CHANGED. SOME GREENS ARE IN BAD SHAPE. IN ALL COURSE WAS BEAUTIFUL AND WILL BE GREAT WHEN DONE. I STILL ENJOYED GOLF AND SCENERY NONE THE LESS.
Fantastic experience!
Even though the course is being renovated, it is still worth experiencing. It is very challenging, but the scenic beauty from beginning to end is awesome!!!!! Felt like we were in Jurrasic Park. I actually played well, as it may be challenging, but not too long for women. Loved it!!!!!!
Absolutely Stunning Setting
This course is exactly what I envisioned a Hawaii golf course would be. The vistas were absolutely stunning and beautiful! It was like playing in the middle of a tropical rain forest.
It is a very challenging course and requires your "A" game. Unfortunately I only packed by B game and it cost me several more golf balls than usual.
The staff was very friendly and courteous.
Playing the Royal Hawaiian is a memory I will cherish for years. It is the most spectacular course I have ever played!
Greens were a mess, patchy sandy and inconsistent. Pace of play should be monitored.
Disappointing overall. Driving range was closed and it was not disclosed. Many of the greens were very patchy with heavy sandy areas. The group in front of me was a twosome. They played multiple balls each and had a full whole seperation between them and the foursome ahead. They played multiple shots per ball played while I sat and waited on the tee box. There was no Marshall or ranger on the course. Probably wont play here again for awhile.
what a cool golf course to play. Front 9 layout very different from back 9. both are great
I thought the staff was very customer service and friendly. The course was really great to play. Greens were consistent in their roll. Golfing in a golf course that makes you feel like your are in the jungle is a unique experience from anything else out there. Fairways are narrow so beware - if you hook any way - you might as well reload cause you will not find it - especially in the back 9. The course layout is being altered in the back 9 when we played and that didn't match up with our golflogix software which was frustrating but not enough to disappoint the experience. I will definitely play this course again!
beautiful!!!
this is hands down one of the most beautiful course i ever play, very challenging but gorgeous!! u get to check this out!
Beautiful Course
Very intersting holes wound thru the forest with lots of elevation change. It was like going for a scenic hike and playing golf at the same time. The greens were not as fast as in the mainland, but I haven't played a course in Oahu that was.
This one's on my 'replay' list
Other than the one hole that's under construction, this course is in pristine condition. WHAT an absolute pleasure it was to play this course. We had heard nothing about this other than what was listed on GOLFNOW. We played Ko'Olina after this one and three holes into Ko'Olina we wished we had skipped Ko'Olina and played Royal Hawaiian twice.
Need to hit the ball straight and correct distance
Course was really imaginative and beautiful. Great views all around you. Luckily, I was hitting the ball well. You must be accurate. I lost only 2 balls and one was just hit too well on an island par 3. The other I misjudged a blind slope to the left into the jungle. The negative for the course would be if you are straying with your shots you will loose a lot of balls. Very narrow fairways and sometimes no rough just jungle, so miss the fairway - loose a ball.
This course is under construction so call ahead.
We arrived and found several features of the course were under construction or unavailable. The driving range was closed and under repair and one of the holes on the back nine was temporary. There are no beverage carts and the food service that they do have near the pro shop was not very good. In speaking with the club pros this course was just recently taken over by the new owners hence the name change to Royal Hawiian. They are making improvements due to neglect by the prior owners but I think they have several months to go so look forward to 2013 and call ahead as this is a Jungle course with spectacular Hawiian mountain views and a very challenging course. You really need to be able to drive the fairways, as with several other courses in HI.
