Richter Park Golf Course
About
Situated at the heart of Fairfield County, Richter Park Golf Course is situated along the West Lake Reservoir. The course has been ranked among not only the top ten golf courses in Connecticut but also as one of the top 25 public courses in the country. The course sprawls across more than 180 acres of gently rolling hills. Water has a prominent presence throughout, with the Reservoir bordering seven holes on the front nine and water hazards coming into play on a total of 14 holes. In addition to the water, there are a variety of elevation changes ranging from subtle to dramatic, which can make it a tough golf course to play your first time. Be prepared for a few blind shots. Richter Park's signature hole, the par-5 12th, is bordered by Boggs Pond. Your third shot will be over water to a bunkered green.

Richter Park during fall foliage Photo submitted by dplevin11 on 10/05/2013
A Favorite
Great golf course and simply a beautiful, scenic layout. A few of the greens were rough in places, but everything else was very well maintained. One of my favorite courses to play.
fantastic public course
Richter Park in Danbury is definitely one of the best public access courses in the metropolitan area. This course is pretty easily accessible from Westchester County and is far more challenging, and better maintained than any of the Westchester public courses. It is not cheap, but deals can be had in the late afternoons. The course is beautifully designed, and features far more water hazards than any course in the area that I have played at. The course has everything I like in a golf course: a great natural layout that is super challenging without being "tricked up". Holes that are reachable in regulation from 4 different tee boxes, but require that you use every club in your bag, a strong focus on course management, well protected large, but challenging greens. Straight shooters will be rewarded with a good score. Slicers and hookers..... bring LOTS of extra golf balls. Course is generally in excellent shapes, though a few greens are pretty funky and rutted. The course is very hilly on the back, and there is a long distance from green to next tee in many locations, meaning you might want to use a cart. The staff is extraordinarily helpful and enthusiastic. I love this place!
Top Public Course in CT
Heard nothing but positive things about Richter Park. Well it stood up to its reputation!
Course was in great condition, its been pretty damp the past few weeks here in Fairfield County, as a result some low lying areas were a bit damp, and the greens were a bit slow as well. But don't let that deter you, the course was in excellent shape overall.
It's definitely in the top public courses I have played here in CT. Getting the deal I got here at golfnow to play this course under $40.00 was such a steal!!!
Would play again in a heartbeat!!!
Beautiful scenic view and challenging course
This course is located in the mountain area with a lot of water. You need to prepare with many extra balls.
The course is in excellent shape.
It is a wonderful layout. I played for 36 dollars at 4 pm. And didn't get thru it all because of slow pay. Wouldn't pay the regular price to play though. Overall if you have the cash it's a beautiful course in excellent shape. Very nice greens and very great sand!
Excellent course
This course is always well maintained condition and
excellent lay-out.
Slow but worth it
The greens were extremely sandy, so putting was way more complicated than usual. Nice views. Water everywhere. Blind downhill dogleg tee shots. Tons of uneven lies. Bunkers seem to have been placed expressly for my shot shape. You don't need to hit it a mile to enjoy playing here. Overall, for the first round of the season it was a great round.
Ok course not as advertised
This course had great reviews online. Greens were sub par and course was lacking some maintenance. I know it was early in the season but I expected more. Good price at $45 but would not play at regular price of $80.
No one mentioned the greens were topdressed
Richter is a nice course; the first six holes are especially set up well, and #3 is a great hole where they've tucked the green behind the end of the reservior. The rest of the front nine is sort of quirky, and #8 is plain bad; The back nine has some very good holes as well, again mostly front loaded, and the #12 green layout is wonderful. It's rather mundane at the end, and #18 is not a very good finishing hole. In the summer and fall it must be very pretty, and judging from the pace of play you'd have alot of time to view the scenery. Contrary to some reviews, the staff we dealt with were excellent; But.... it really should have been pointed out somewhere the greens were being worked on. All in all, worth a drive, and we'll give it another shot in the fall.
Beautiful course
This course is challenging but a lot of fun. It has beautiful scenery and was a great place for golf
Shot gun start..we weren't scheduled
For some reason people who purchased Shot Gun start from Golf Now. ..we not scheduled until all the holes were booked... and were double up to start at 2 starting holes...making the round even longer...they gave me a cart to start the round that was not good and had to switch me out with another... Treated like second class golfers...we held up the start and were abused verbally by other golfers...if Golf Now customers are treated this way I can't say I will return as a customer. So what can you do for me!!!
Nice Layout, beautiful views, disappointing conditions & pace of play.
I played this courses years ago & remember pristine conditions matching the high price for non-residents at $82 with cart before 2pm on weekends. With it's beautiful layout & wonderful views I didn't mind the high price tag, but when the pace of play prevents you from finishing before dark with a 4-1/2 hour casual pace (front nine was over 2-3/4 hours & I left after 14 holes with about a half hour before dark), it's really frustrating to see that the ranger was definitely not enforcing at least a 4-1/2 hour pace of play which would have allowed us to complete our round well before it would be too dark). The starter even gave us a card that he attached to the window of our cart with what time it should be after every three holes- we were at least a half hour behind "their" demanded pace of play after 6 holes, but the ranger disappeared after 6 holes. I am not normally this critical, but Richter Park's cavalier attitude toward non-resident visitors paying exhorbitant prices for playing a course that did not live up to it's image in my mind in terms of maintenance, staff helpfulness, and just plain forgetting about the fact that they are selling outdoors physical entertainment to their "guests." If I was a senior resident walking during the week, I couldn't complain about the $25 for 18 holes....oh well.
A thinking man's golf course.
Whereas this is not a long course, the layout and hazards (both natural, and man-made) determine how you want to play each hole. Not a course for taking out the driver on every hole. The course is very well maintained for a public course. I believe that this course is more for an intermediate to advanced player, as it poses quite the challenge for a straight shooter, or one who can intentionally shape his shot.
Great course during peak fall foliage
Richter is a challenging and interesting course among some reservoirs. It is especially beautiful during peak fall foliage. Pace of play is usually poor. It is expensive for a non-resident even with promotional discounts.
Nice cours
I have never played here before so I was happy to see how nice it was to play. Very pretty course with lots of space. Beautiful layout for all skill levels but on the hard side. greens were semi fast for this time of year. Overall it is great.
Staff were stuck up (starter), something about muni starters I don't get. No carts at time of check in and were at least one group behind schedule, then had group cut in front of us because they were late by starter.
Nice Day at Richter Park
Very nice course. First time playing there. Interesting and challenging layout. Course was in great shape. A little pricey ($72 regular-$62 if a senior) if you are not a Danbury resident, but I would definitely go back with a Golf Now or Groupon coupon price @ $40 to $50.
A very good day of golf.
The course was in good shape. The greens were thick and smooth even with a full day of play. Fairways were in good shape. The pin placements were challenging. Richter Park is a reliable public course with consistent and challenging play.
Great scenery, challenging golf, fair value.
Richter Park is a must stop on your summer golfing list. On 9//9/13, the course was in outstanding condition; fairways were firm enough to allow roll on the tee shots but soft for iron play. The greens were rolling a little slow, but true. The weather was perfect for play, clear and sunny with temps in the 70's, and the scenery was spectacular with abundant mountain and reservoir views.
From the back tees, Richter is an unforgiving test. As the front nine progresses, accuracy with the tee ball is a must or you'll roll off into the woods. What makes Richter satisfying is balance. Two of the par 5's are straightaway (#2 is reachable, #16 isn't- for most), and the other two are exacting position holes that run side hill all the way. The par 3's are moderately difficult (none of them play more than 180 yards) and represent a scoring opportunity. The par 4's are a mixture of long and short, uphill/downhill holes with a left to right bias. Many of the longer holes (on the card) actually play short due to elevated tee boxes and/or fairways that run downhill.
In summary, you'll definitely enjoy Richter Park, but don't expect to be comfortable on this demanding test.
beautiful scenic views on most holes
There is a reason this course is ranked in top 50 public courses you can play each year. The 18 holer makes you hit every club in the bag and is in nice condition overall. Greens roll true and the pace of play is good as rangers are around to move the groups along without seeming intrusive.
Great Course, Tough Greens, Slow Play
Very nice public golf course, in very good shape, with some of the hardest greens I've ever putted. A few quirky holes, with no real landing area, a few to many blind shots for my liking, and pace of play keep it from being a 5 star. Still a great public track and worth playing.
