Weird Express
Our foursome was ready for a wonderful day at this championship course. When we chatted with the starter he seemed concerned that we had a foursome. "oh, you have a full group, huh?" We soon found out why. On the second hole a twosome began pressing us. We started looking for a good spot to let them play through... obviously. Then we noticed a single! playing behind the twosome... what top course schedules like this ... on a Sunday morning? It got worse. After we allowed the twosome and the single to play through... the starter came out and told us "you guys are behind the pace of play and need to pick up your pace." Just put a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Then they began watching 👀 us on each tee. Weird. So, great course, but be careful when you're in front of a twosome or single!
The Better of the Two Courses in my Humble Opinion
Felt this was the better designed course of the two and a more memorable round. A few pretty good golf holes. The undulation on some of the greens are crazy. Although it's touted as the wider and easier course, I didn't feel it was really any more easy or hard than the East course if you were playing the same distances. I felt both courses are a little overpriced and underwhelming but if they can get the price they are getting and have full tee sheets then why not! I do love the fields ranch logo with the round bale of hay and the flag stick leaning on it.
A more laid-back, fun-forward alternative to the East
Knowing a major championship host was being built simultaneously next door, West architect Beau Welling was equal to the task of building something for the rest of the golf world to truly enjoy at PGA Frisco.
The West differs from the East on two fronts. The first is the West’s more rambunctious terrain; it tackles the property’s large central hill three times where the East’s routing features two climbs, both somewhat more gradual. As a result, carts are the norm at the West, as opposed to the East’s mandatory walking caddies.
Whereas the East’s undulating greens are generally convex (and vexing), the West’s putting surfaces are more whimsical, though plenty challenging in their own right. The abrupt ridge that bisects the par-3 3rd green is an early indication of the West’s different approach. It works; many weekend visitors who blow into town for three rounds will play the West twice and the East once. That’s a high compliment to Welling’s design sensibilities.
