Disastrous traps
I've played course 1/2 dozen times & on each occasion, the traps are worse than moguls on ski slopes...just horrible. Rest of course is nice & well manicured, but PLEASE, get people to rake!
Needs improvements
Have played this course for years and watched it improve but lately, it's gone the other way. Bunkers are never raked and overflowing with sand, fairways are less than acceptable, and yesterday, some random dude showed up on the fairways hitting golf balls between groupings (unbelievable!). I later learned when I complained that he is a regular visitor and the golf club doesn't do anything about him because he is the buddy of Bridgeport's Mayor. Golfers were yelling at him to get off the fairway and he would wave and continue to take his random shots across the fairway. We had to skip a hole because he would not move. This course has become a mediocre mom and pop shop catering to cronyism. I only recommend it as a last resort.
Pleasantly surprised!!!
Haven't played the Black in over 10 years. Overall, course in good shape except for a few tee boxes were in bad shape. Carts have gps, greens consistent and great sand in bunkers, although players do not rake them. Will be back!
Nice Course
Both courses are a great value and challenging. Well groomed public course.
Not bad
Condition was pretty bad. Green very slow. Some great elevations make it fun. Back 9 is very tough. Lots of blind shots.
Played Friday, 7/28, with perfect conditions @ noon.
Played Blues Tees @ 6500+ yards. Course in good shape although we didn't play the ball down on the fairway. Certainly didn't roll it every time but we didn't feel summer rules were called for. Greens rolled true but a bit slower than I recalled, could be don't want to over cut w the summer heat. Problem we had was a twosome suddenly appeared in front of us on the back 9. They eventually joined a single who we let play thru on the front, but we finished around 4:20 . Hot Hot Dogs @ the turn which were good eatin'. A good day on the links.
Nice Day at the wheel
Played the red course. Some traps on the back 9 had no sand but overall good.
Great Value
I prefer the Black course however both it and the Red are equally challenging as you have to navigate hilly terrain and doglegs. There is a premium placed on your length off the tee otherwise it can make for a long day. Bunkers were not in great shape and you could tell they are probably not maintained daily. Overall it's a nice parkland style course.
Starter
Only complaint was the starter he was rude and hates golf now folks said it several times in front of others
Fun, but tough walk
Good variety of holes. Elevation changes make it challenging. Some blind shots, but overall fun to play
overall experience is very good.
Love The Wheel ! Very friendly stall , polite players, and good conditions. Love the deals on Golf Now, We can play more often!
No walk in the park
I've been playing The Wheel for the past 5 years, and every year it's improving. 2017 finds greens in great shape, fairways nice and smooth. Lots of trouble throughout Black so it's no walk in the park. When you do find trouble, the rough can be very rough. Rocks, hard pack, tree roots and more. A true New England experience. Just keep the ball straight! ;) Weekends plan on a long round if you're out before noon. Course serves a wide range of golfers, some of whom don't know when to wave the faster through. Rangers are not that present. It's a nice track and worth the dough.
Pro Tip on Pace of Play
You can save 1.5 hours per round if your have everyone in your foursome putt out. Said another way, Once you start putting don't stop until it's in the hole or you are given the putt. Try it in your next friendly & report back.
