This course was not too bad
The course was in decent shape. We played the black course today. It's spread out over a lot of land so you definitely won't want to walk this course. You need a cart. It's challenging. Some dog legs and you really have to shape shots. Some short par 4's that can be taken advantage of easily. Overall we were pleased but surprised at how inconsistent the greens speeds were.
Not worth a return trip
Sprinklers were on and off during the round resulting in a very muddy course. The staff (starter and old guy moving carts) were obnoxious.
Pace of play was the best thing about the course.
Great value for $24 with Cart - any higher would be too much for conditions
Many fairways are missing grass - washed out - greens soft but in good shape...should not allow walkers until afternoon for such an up/down course - really slows down play on a number of holes...
Black Course - Bad Shape
I have played Fairchild Black course numerous times. Throughout the years this course has always needed some attention, but for the prices you pay it is difficult to complain. This time around my tee time cost $21 for 18 & cart and I would honestly have to say that was too much. The fairways consisted of more mud/dirt than grass. The greens were so shaggy and slow that all putts were coming up ridiculously short. Overall the condition was terrible and even though the price was so cheap I will most likely not play here again.
some difficult holes
Pace of play was excellent greens were slow but consistent some rough patches on a few fairways.
Golf on a rainy day
Played on a rainy morning, was lucky that rain held off suing our round. Checking in was quick and staff was friendly. Took a cart or the round and it was gas powered. A lot of damage on the course from the recent heat wave and rain storms. Some fairways were "skinned down" to bare dirt. Tee boxes were in fair to poor shape. Greens were in fair to good shape. For the value I would play again, was told that an average weekend round is 5+ hours.
Wonderful layout played black course
very pretty course- played the black course for first time- nice mix of holes with fairly wide fairways- hilly terrain up and down on several holes-used cart
This course has potential.
The greens are in great shape-the fairways need some attention. Nice tract. Convenient location.
It's all downhill
While both the Black and Red courses at the Wheel do benefit from generous elevation changes, both courses' state of disrepair is troubling. I've played this course over the past three years and each year is worse than the last. This year the Red course featured tee boxes of full crab grass, poor fairways, and mediocre greens full of ball marks. The Black course doesn't fare much better although there are patches of actual grass on the tee boxes. Not only that, but the food service in the "snack shop" (not the bar, the bar is excellent) takes forever if you stop at the turn and the riff-raff that plays here leads to getting hit into and getting held up for 5+ hour rounds. Overall, it's only worth the $15 "hot deal" that is sometimes featured on Golfnow to play there. I won't pay a cent more.
Fun course for beginers and moderate players
The renovation to the course make the place a lot better. Last year I would have never recommend it.
