Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club
About
Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club (formerly known as The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford) is one of the most affordable rounds in the area and it has received praise as one of the best golf courses in Connecticut. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for beginners but low handicappers will also find it to be a fun round. The holes are fairly straightforward though there are some fairways that have very narrow landing areas that will test the accuracy of even the best golfers. Numerous bunkers are strategically placed along the undulating greens and water also comes into play on the occasional hole. The golf course starts out gently but becomes progressively more challenging on the back nine. The most memorable hole on the golf course, the par-3 12th, is a water hole that features an intimidating island green.

Third: Excellent short par-3, including this rolling and tricky green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Sixth: the view from about 50 yards of its green. It stretches 554 yards from the blues. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Seventh; Great, strategic short par-3 with six bunkers in landing zone. This is the largest. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Island par 3 Photo submitted by Tim6164739 on 09/24/2013
Fun course with some interesting holes. Very fast and fun greens. A few surprises along the way. Lots of roll on the fairways. Fun time. Would play again.
Wet Conditions
It is a nice course, okay. The conditions were not good on the day we played. The fairways were extremely muddy and the sand was more mud like. I would guess when the weather dries out, this course would pretty nice.
The Old Guys
Am 69 year old ... Driver 180-200 yds, 5iron 145 ... Low mid handicap. Tradition only had three tee boxes. Blue, White, Red. Several holes were extremely long for Senior golfers. 525 yd Par 5, Several 475-495 par 4s. Par 3 distances were fair. Would recommend Tradition adding Senior tees, especially during the mid week when us grey heads play. Other than that ... High marks. Will play again. Hot Deal is a great value.
Solid Course
Overall the course is nice. However, it is extremely wet on some holes which makes it hard to maintain fairways. Greens are in great shape for this time of year. Fun layout with some very unique holes.
Nice job!
Tradition Golf Course was pleasure to play today!! My group had a great time!
Great were in excellent condition for March 27th!!!
Pace was great!
Fairways were also in great shape.
Staff was great. Nice touch with the greeter at the carts to help us with our bags!!!
Went in to the pub for a quick bite. Home made chips were Awesome!!
We'll be back soon!!!
Great course!
Considering today is January 4th, the course was in remarkable shape. Greens & Bunkers were “as expected” for winter golf. The island green was a blast. Fairways were in good shape.
Staff bent over backwards to ensure we enjoyed our round.
Overall our group had a great time and will be back soon!!
Wet
Well first off, it was a rainy and rather chilly day. Not knowing the course really and the weather put it to a challenge. One of us had a good round the rest eh. The pin placements were tough for us but the greens ran true and in spite of the rain, quick.
Great shape, great pace
Always in great shape, a little pricey, but worth the extra ~$10 over other local courses
Awesome day on the links‼️
What a great day today was.
They had a golf tournament right after our foresome and not once were we inconvenienced.
The course was a bit saturated with all the rain but totally playable.
The starter was spot on!! He had everyone well organized.
A pleasure to play Wallingford Tradition today‼️‼️
Sad and grossed....
I’ve played this course many times. The fairways and greens were in decent shape. The back nine greens were under airation but they did a great job adding some sand so it was not like putting on a peg board as in the past... so that’s a positive. The negative was on hole #12 (island water hole)... there was a lot of algae/fungus, but too many DEAD FISH floating all over! I stopped counting at 25.... it was really gross and smelled terrible. The next few holes were ok but I can never get over the hate for a par 3 18th hole.... Keep your mind on the positive improvements at this course, but don’t look in the water.... try to enjoy your round.
Aeration is necessary. I have played here for the past 4 years and have never seen peg board putting after aeration. As for the algae/fungus and dead fish that's Mother Nature. Of course you could kill the algae/fungus but that would put a lot more chemicals into the water which is not good for the environment. As for the 18th hole I quite enjoy it. It's especially challenging if the pins on the right front.
Tight fairways
me And my buddy’s we’re up to try a new course. So we thought why not Try the traditions. Fairways are a little tight but greens are pretty big. Greens putt fast. Overall the course is in good shape. The only things I didn’t like were the bunkers were rockhard and the tee boxes Haven’t been moved in a long time. A lot of debits on all the tea boxes
I play there often. Most of the time the bunkers are just fine. If played just after a rain they may not have had time to work on them yet. As for the tee boxes they move them often. As for divots on the tee boxes many people do not fill them in even though each par 3 tee box has divot mix on it. Plus every cart has divot mix.
Staff was great. The course needs adjustments. Most of the light rough is rock hard. The greens and pin placements are sometime comical. They were way too fast. There’s no reward for going for them because the greens don’t hold.
I play here quite often. As far as the light rough being rock hard I disagree plus until yesterday we had barely any rain in over a month. As for the greens at times the pins are in difficult spots however when they are just go for the safe place below the hole.As far as too fast I again disagree in fact they are slower than earlier in the season. The greens actually hold fairly well when hitting an 8 iron or less in and using a correct ball.
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
I play there often and am also a senior. Yes there is one par 5 of 525 yds but the tee shot is down hill. As for par 4s being 475-495 yds there are none. Also the other par 5s are less than 450 yds from the white tees. In fact the distance from the white tees is less than 5500 yds which is actually a little less than most courses senior tees.
