Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club
About
Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club (formerly known as The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford) is one of the most affordable rounds in the area and it has received praise as one of the best golf courses in Connecticut. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for beginners but low handicappers will also find it to be a fun round. The holes are fairly straightforward though there are some fairways that have very narrow landing areas that will test the accuracy of even the best golfers. Numerous bunkers are strategically placed along the undulating greens and water also comes into play on the occasional hole. The golf course starts out gently but becomes progressively more challenging on the back nine. The most memorable hole on the golf course, the par-3 12th, is a water hole that features an intimidating island green.

What is wrong with your management?
Was repeatedly harassed by course staff during the game mid-stroke for play speed even though they was no one else on the course and over whether our drinks were purchased on location even after showing receipt. When we returned to the clubhouse there was some angry woman who I assume was in-charge stalking around screaming at her employees in full view of customers. Not going to return to this course again and will be informing family and friends of the abhorrent atmosphere here. Came for a relaxing day of golf, left disgusted and irritated. I plan all the company outings for my branch and I certainly wont be bringing them here, find new management.
Customer Service Training Needed
We had a golf tournament there yesterday, we have the same tournament twice a year at many different courses and they are always very accommodating and appreciative of all the business they are getting, until yesterday at Traditions at Wallingford. As everyone walked up to check in they asked us all what was in our bags and told us we were not allowed to bring our own alcohol out, that was ok but not usually something we have been greeted with. During the course of our game the beverage cart came around a total of 1 time, so then they wonder why people want to bring their own out…. When we finished hole 18 there was a tie between 2 teams, we decided it would be a good idea to play hole 1 over as a tie breaker, as long as it was open. One of our carts drove to the club house and told the starter the situation and he said fine. So we played hole 1 over with no one waiting behind us and ended the hole still in a tie, we then decided to play hole 2 and if we were tie after that we would have a putt off and not go any further. Within 30 seconds of us getting to the tee one of the workers rode up and was infuriated yelling we need to get off the course right now!! He said the owner was very mad!! We explained the situation, even offered more money to finish up and told him this was the end no matter what, he said ok and pulled away. All of us were then at the green ready to finish the game with nobody waiting behind us and here comes the cart again with the same worker and the owner… She gets out of the cart yelling hysterically at us that we need to leave now!! We asked if we could finish our putts and even pay more if needed, her response was yelling NO you are not putting, take your stuff and get off the course, she even took the keys out of our carts wanting us to walk back!!! This rant went on and on it was ridiculous!! Her approach to us was so non customer centric and crazy, she seemed to want a confrontation. We were doing nothing wrong, just trying to have a clear tournament winner, again nobody waiting behind us, we offered to pay a difference, I just do not get it! Unfortunately I will never play there again and I know many people who golf there and will share this story with them…. This is an example of horrible customer service at its best!
Excellent Golf in CT in January
Tradition was one of the few course open during 50 degree weekend in January. Conditions were great for the time of year. The pace of play was good. They even allowed carts on the course. An excellent January experience. I'll definitely be back in the summer!
Great Late Fall Course
Course was in excellent condition. Traps were raked, Greens were smooth, and leaves were blow off of the playing areas.
Great fun
Course is in great condition...staff very friendly...
. good food & drink
Very nice course
Course was in very good shape one green had some damage. Course was totally empty played 18 holes and never saw another golfer, only complaint is we got there early and asked if we could possibly get off early and was told you guys that book cheap tee times online have to wait till your time comes up....so we waited for an hour and never saw another group go off. Other than that it was a good day..no one picks up missed shots came out with over 50 balls all within a hands reach.
This is an underrated course which is a fun challenge
Drove up from NY not with high expectations and the slope rating was not high. There are some wonderful holes on the course, greens were in excellent condition and there are some very hard par 4 holes, number 2 and and 4 and 9. The short par 4 holes require focus, number 7 and and excellent 17th. Par 4 16th required two solid shots just to not lose a ball and the par 3 island 12th is as much fun as you would expect. It was a slow game but the layout was worth the trip. Plays a very long 6,000 yards from the back
Great course
Course is in good shape, greens were kept up and consistent. Play on the course was slow but groups of golfers let us play threw, did not see a ranger to keep play moving along. Overall a great course to play.
Fun course
Can't use your driver everywhere. Makes white tees play much longer. Greens very fast and a bit too hard. Do not believe the course slope of 119 is accurate seems much more difficult than that. Fun layout if you like the mental aspect of club selection to a target area. Some condos on certain holes and high tension wires take away from the aesthetics but not an issue for me
Great track
I decided to play a quick 9 since I was on my way to New York to play Bethpage Black the following day. I used the golf now app and this course was close by. The course has some funky holes. Very tight course. The greens are little bit slower than I am use to. A group let me play through on hole 6 and then they joined me on hole 8 since pace of play slowed down. Overall, a very nice track and I would play again.
Golf w my pops
Took my dad here. Greens are fun and challenging. I often found trouble on the course. Aim for the fairways and you'll be fine
Wouldn't do it again
Staff was very friendly but pace of play was atrocious with no help from the ranger. Not sure they even have one. A couple of stupid holes....like most courses I guess. But for the price I'd gladly pay a couple bucks more and play a better course that I can get around in less than five hours. Observed three other foursomes that had absolutely no idea about etiquette. Replaced no ball marks, filled no divots, stepped and turned on the cups, blatantly hit balls into the group ahead of them. Refused to let smaller faster groups play through......not going back if the staff can't police their course. Not even close to a four star course.
The pace can get a little slow on very busy weekend mornings. It is not an easy golf course, don't let the yardage fool you. As far as how "other groups" conduct themselves, a lot of golfers now and days have no clue about proper golf etiquette. From showing up later for t-times, improper dress, and total disregard for other player as well as a clubs rules and policies, it's ridiculous .
Fun Course If You Play Smart, but Can Spiral Quickly
The course itself is not inherently difficult, but the changes in elevation and constant out of bounds lurking off to the side ensure that you need to play smart.
The best part about this course is the variety of layouts for the holes. You never feel like you are replaying the same holes over and over. On the contrary, each hole is able to stand on its own and provide a unique experience on every tee to green.
The hardest part when we played was the speed of the greens. It hadn't rained in a while and it was impossible to putt well. All things considered, it didn't detract from the day and we just figured it was part of the challenge.
The food in the clubhouse is quite tasty and the staff is friendly, but service can be painfully slow on weekend afternoons. So much that you'll regret wasting time sitting and just decide to head somewhere else to eat. If it doesn't look too crowded, give it a try.
This course has a par 3 water hole and a lot of different elevation shots
Great course to play, great greens and very nice. Not a green level, need to read all shots. Fairways fantastic. Overall the course is great, and 19th hole is great.
Good course
Good course, has something for all skill levels. Pace of play 5 hours just too long. Need a ranger to move people. Food was good.
WOW AMAZING COURSE.
One of the best courses I've played between western MA and New Haven, CT. Greens are as good as you can imagine, undulation is freakish and beautiful. Fairways are pristine and have good run out. Some of the tee boxes are a bit sandy, and they course is definitely plenty long and challenging. The wind was NUTS today, and with elevation changes it will absolutely make you pause. I am absolutely in love, and for 42$ with a cart that's incredible. Played the back tees and the forced carry is great. Fairway bunkers are strategic but easy to avoid. You want to be accurate, so don't spray everywhere. The 6th tee shot is tightest tree line fairway I think I have ever seen. Island green 12th is surreal. Considering I have never been here before, I'll take the 86! Warning- not walkable with the layout. You will definitely need cart. The only thing that was a bit annoying was score card yardages vs. stone yardages have variance, since no gold tees. You'll add this course to your favorites in CT, no doubt about it.
Ridiculous blue tees
I play this course often, and yesterday was a joke. Blue tees were as far back as you can possibly have them on every hole except 18 (because of maintenance on upper tee). Almost every hole was 20 - 30 yards beyond the beginning of the blue area and some were an additional box beyond the normal area. 6 made for a ridiculous tee shot with an overhanging branch on the right that needs to be cut with the tees back that far. It left only about a 15 - 20 yard wide window to hit your drive. I moved to the very left of the box to give myself the best angle and had bushes in my backswing. It made for a much less enjoyable round. They should warn you when you check in if the tees are all the way back, we would've played from the whites.
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
Thank you for coming out to enjoy our course. I apologize if our staff made you wait for your t-time, but that is our policy with "hot-deals". We hope to see you again.
