Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club
About
Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club (formerly known as The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford) is one of the most affordable rounds in the area and it has received praise as one of the best golf courses in Connecticut. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for beginners but low handicappers will also find it to be a fun round. The holes are fairly straightforward though there are some fairways that have very narrow landing areas that will test the accuracy of even the best golfers. Numerous bunkers are strategically placed along the undulating greens and water also comes into play on the occasional hole. The golf course starts out gently but becomes progressively more challenging on the back nine. The most memorable hole on the golf course, the par-3 12th, is a water hole that features an intimidating island green.

Third: Excellent short par-3, including this rolling and tricky green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Fun course
Can't use your driver everywhere. Makes white tees play much longer. Greens very fast and a bit too hard. Do not believe the course slope of 119 is accurate seems much more difficult than that. Fun layout if you like the mental aspect of club selection to a target area. Some condos on certain holes and high tension wires take away from the aesthetics but not an issue for me
Great track
I decided to play a quick 9 since I was on my way to New York to play Bethpage Black the following day. I used the golf now app and this course was close by. The course has some funky holes. Very tight course. The greens are little bit slower than I am use to. A group let me play through on hole 6 and then they joined me on hole 8 since pace of play slowed down. Overall, a very nice track and I would play again.
Golf w my pops
Took my dad here. Greens are fun and challenging. I often found trouble on the course. Aim for the fairways and you'll be fine
Wouldn't do it again
Staff was very friendly but pace of play was atrocious with no help from the ranger. Not sure they even have one. A couple of stupid holes....like most courses I guess. But for the price I'd gladly pay a couple bucks more and play a better course that I can get around in less than five hours. Observed three other foursomes that had absolutely no idea about etiquette. Replaced no ball marks, filled no divots, stepped and turned on the cups, blatantly hit balls into the group ahead of them. Refused to let smaller faster groups play through......not going back if the staff can't police their course. Not even close to a four star course.
Fun Course If You Play Smart, but Can Spiral Quickly
The course itself is not inherently difficult, but the changes in elevation and constant out of bounds lurking off to the side ensure that you need to play smart.
The best part about this course is the variety of layouts for the holes. You never feel like you are replaying the same holes over and over. On the contrary, each hole is able to stand on its own and provide a unique experience on every tee to green.
The hardest part when we played was the speed of the greens. It hadn't rained in a while and it was impossible to putt well. All things considered, it didn't detract from the day and we just figured it was part of the challenge.
The food in the clubhouse is quite tasty and the staff is friendly, but service can be painfully slow on weekend afternoons. So much that you'll regret wasting time sitting and just decide to head somewhere else to eat. If it doesn't look too crowded, give it a try.
This course has a par 3 water hole and a lot of different elevation shots
Great course to play, great greens and very nice. Not a green level, need to read all shots. Fairways fantastic. Overall the course is great, and 19th hole is great.
Good course
Good course, has something for all skill levels. Pace of play 5 hours just too long. Need a ranger to move people. Food was good.
WOW AMAZING COURSE.
One of the best courses I've played between western MA and New Haven, CT. Greens are as good as you can imagine, undulation is freakish and beautiful. Fairways are pristine and have good run out. Some of the tee boxes are a bit sandy, and they course is definitely plenty long and challenging. The wind was NUTS today, and with elevation changes it will absolutely make you pause. I am absolutely in love, and for 42$ with a cart that's incredible. Played the back tees and the forced carry is great. Fairway bunkers are strategic but easy to avoid. You want to be accurate, so don't spray everywhere. The 6th tee shot is tightest tree line fairway I think I have ever seen. Island green 12th is surreal. Considering I have never been here before, I'll take the 86! Warning- not walkable with the layout. You will definitely need cart. The only thing that was a bit annoying was score card yardages vs. stone yardages have variance, since no gold tees. You'll add this course to your favorites in CT, no doubt about it.
Ridiculous blue tees
I play this course often, and yesterday was a joke. Blue tees were as far back as you can possibly have them on every hole except 18 (because of maintenance on upper tee). Almost every hole was 20 - 30 yards beyond the beginning of the blue area and some were an additional box beyond the normal area. 6 made for a ridiculous tee shot with an overhanging branch on the right that needs to be cut with the tees back that far. It left only about a 15 - 20 yard wide window to hit your drive. I moved to the very left of the box to give myself the best angle and had bushes in my backswing. It made for a much less enjoyable round. They should warn you when you check in if the tees are all the way back, we would've played from the whites.
Good Course for the price
I have played here 10x this year already and definitely recommend it. I wouldnt reccomend playing from the blues when they are on the tips.
Hard Course but alot of fun.
This course was a very difficult course in my opinion. Usually shoot in the low to mid 90's and I ended shooting 103. Not for hackers. Requires some precise shots and pretty decent accuracy overall. Lot of places off the Fairway where you could loose balls. Lots of narrow fairways but overall had alot of fun. The 12th hole with the island green was great. Lost two balls but finally got the 3rd one to stick. The only downside was the grass and greens were very dry and almost burnt 6.4.16 but we have not had much rain recently. Overall great course and maybe I'll play again one day but right now it's a little to hard for my skill set.
Challenging
The greens are very challenging. It helps if you know where you want to put your ball on them. 3 putts happen more than I like. Lol. You have to be striking the ball well if you want a good score.
not easy not difficulit
Easy start but more difficult course. Challengeable eagle on 10th. Beutiful and interesting 14th island hall. After round grab a beer at restaurant.
Nice course with an island green
Overall a really nice course!
The carts are kinda slow and old, which I feel added another 1 hour on to our playing time lol. The only negative thing for me is the last 4 ending holes, to have a par three and than two holes back to back in wig u have to lay up and than another par 3 kinda always makes me scratch my head when I play here. I I will continue to play here but probably Will not be my first choice sadly
Monday afternoon outing with my son who just got home from college.
Always enjoy playing this course.
Nice course layout
Very good public course. Interesting holes. Specially 12th hole.
Challenging and in great shape
Been playing here for 10 years and it's in the best shape ever.
Good condition and pace of play.
Course was really in good condition. Greens were comfortably fast even with the morning rain and dew.
Place of play was good although we had a 7am tee time so tough to tell how it would be later in the day.
Fun course for an intermediate or better golfer.
Challenging, great condition
Love the course. Once again, slow play mared the experience. More needs to be done (education, course ranger) to improve this issue. One slow group can ruin the playing enjoyment of every group on the course.

The pace can get a little slow on very busy weekend mornings. It is not an easy golf course, don't let the yardage fool you. As far as how "other groups" conduct themselves, a lot of golfers now and days have no clue about proper golf etiquette. From showing up later for t-times, improper dress, and total disregard for other player as well as a clubs rules and policies, it's ridiculous .
