Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club
About
Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club (formerly known as The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford) is one of the most affordable rounds in the area and it has received praise as one of the best golf courses in Connecticut. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for beginners but low handicappers will also find it to be a fun round. The holes are fairly straightforward though there are some fairways that have very narrow landing areas that will test the accuracy of even the best golfers. Numerous bunkers are strategically placed along the undulating greens and water also comes into play on the occasional hole. The golf course starts out gently but becomes progressively more challenging on the back nine. The most memorable hole on the golf course, the par-3 12th, is a water hole that features an intimidating island green.

Third: Excellent short par-3, including this rolling and tricky green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Island par 3 Photo submitted by Tim6164739 on 09/24/2013
Mediocre
Greens were very distressed , bumpy and hairy. Course conditions were very suspect
The back 9 is glorious!
The back 9 really makes this course what it is. Complete with a rollercoaster-like cart path bridge, lush greens, beautiful fairways, an island green surrounded by water, completely quiet and woodsy. Here's why I didn't give it more stars; the front 9. It needs a lot of work. Even the greens were a little off. Tbh I was extremely disappointed after the front 9 but the back 9 more than made up for it. It is one of the most beautiful back 9's in the state if not the most
Excellent Condition
Early morning tee time and pace of play was great
Overall condition excellent
Enjoy
Excellent Course
Staff was excellent. Very efficient and friendly
Course was in great shape
Greens were fabulous
Fantastic course
Play the course quite often. It's always in wonderful shape. The staff is great. I have read reviews that if you have a Hot Deal they will not let you out early. I have never run into that problem as long as space and time is available. A two twosome option at times is also allowed as long as you will not be running into full paying customers(can you blame them). One recommendation for the course would charge an extra $1.00 for playing and include about 15 range balls.
Great Job
This course is a great challenge. Do not be fooled by the yardage. It is a par 70 with five par 3s if you turn one par 3 into a par 5 at 500 yards the course would be a 6500 yard par 72. Longer par 4s...Par 5 opportunities to reach in 2. Drivable Par 4s combined with the island green all makes every hole so much different. The greens role true and are undulating. The food is great. The course is in excellent shape. Bernadette the GM and Rick the Head Pro are a great team who strive for the customers to have the best experience.
Great pace of play
The staff were friendly and quickly got us started. Played an early morning round of 18 as a twosome and finished in 3:40. This is despite the fact that the layout is odd and you have to drive extensive distances between tees on some holes. Really the only negative. Greens were fast and in good condition. Loved the island green par 3 - short but fun. Overall great value for the $28 it cost through Golfnow.
Thought I booked a different course
I booked Tradition at Wallingford by mistake. I thought I had booked the Woodbridge course!
We showed up and the staff were very very friendly and genuinely glad to have us there. From the moment we arrived we could tell this was no Augusta or Pebble Beach but it was really impressive that we got the feeling that they were using all of their resources to get as close as possible to those high standards. It had a great feeling about the place, and I appreciate the genuine effort to accommodate and their guidance.
The course was in great shape, very well cared for. The carts were clean and well maintained, the facilities were very good too.
The course is a little tight in places but a challenge is always refreshing. Some holes had overhead power lines.. nothing they can do about that and it really didn't take anything away from the day.
Although I was unfamiliar with the course, the better than average diagrams on the scorecard made it easy to understand where to go and where not to!
When you play this course, you'll love the replica par three island hole. Awesome. Maybe more so because all four of use hit the green. But just a great hole.
The last hole is a par 3. A bit surprising, but nevertheless a fun hole. A weird looking two-tier green, but, with the pin on the lower and landing the ball on the upper, you don't chip from the upper part of the green to the lower as you might think is the only solution. Just roll your ball down the channel to be surprised how close even the worst shot gets you a par. Those are two holes you'd be talking about on the ride home!
Overall, a very nice day of golf, and once more, the staff could not have been more helpful.
Great job guys!
What is wrong with your management?
Was repeatedly harassed by course staff during the game mid-stroke for play speed even though they was no one else on the course and over whether our drinks were purchased on location even after showing receipt. When we returned to the clubhouse there was some angry woman who I assume was in-charge stalking around screaming at her employees in full view of customers. Not going to return to this course again and will be informing family and friends of the abhorrent atmosphere here. Came for a relaxing day of golf, left disgusted and irritated. I plan all the company outings for my branch and I certainly wont be bringing them here, find new management.
Customer Service Training Needed
We had a golf tournament there yesterday, we have the same tournament twice a year at many different courses and they are always very accommodating and appreciative of all the business they are getting, until yesterday at Traditions at Wallingford. As everyone walked up to check in they asked us all what was in our bags and told us we were not allowed to bring our own alcohol out, that was ok but not usually something we have been greeted with. During the course of our game the beverage cart came around a total of 1 time, so then they wonder why people want to bring their own out…. When we finished hole 18 there was a tie between 2 teams, we decided it would be a good idea to play hole 1 over as a tie breaker, as long as it was open. One of our carts drove to the club house and told the starter the situation and he said fine. So we played hole 1 over with no one waiting behind us and ended the hole still in a tie, we then decided to play hole 2 and if we were tie after that we would have a putt off and not go any further. Within 30 seconds of us getting to the tee one of the workers rode up and was infuriated yelling we need to get off the course right now!! He said the owner was very mad!! We explained the situation, even offered more money to finish up and told him this was the end no matter what, he said ok and pulled away. All of us were then at the green ready to finish the game with nobody waiting behind us and here comes the cart again with the same worker and the owner… She gets out of the cart yelling hysterically at us that we need to leave now!! We asked if we could finish our putts and even pay more if needed, her response was yelling NO you are not putting, take your stuff and get off the course, she even took the keys out of our carts wanting us to walk back!!! This rant went on and on it was ridiculous!! Her approach to us was so non customer centric and crazy, she seemed to want a confrontation. We were doing nothing wrong, just trying to have a clear tournament winner, again nobody waiting behind us, we offered to pay a difference, I just do not get it! Unfortunately I will never play there again and I know many people who golf there and will share this story with them…. This is an example of horrible customer service at its best!
Excellent Golf in CT in January
Tradition was one of the few course open during 50 degree weekend in January. Conditions were great for the time of year. The pace of play was good. They even allowed carts on the course. An excellent January experience. I'll definitely be back in the summer!
Great Late Fall Course
Course was in excellent condition. Traps were raked, Greens were smooth, and leaves were blow off of the playing areas.
Great fun
Course is in great condition...staff very friendly...
. good food & drink
I played a day later and totally disagree with this statement. The greens are some of the best in the area.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion and we appreciate any and all feedback, this however is not an accurate statement. The maintenance staff works extremely hard to keep the course, especially the greens, in top condition.
