Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club
About
Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club (formerly known as The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford) is one of the most affordable rounds in the area and it has received praise as one of the best golf courses in Connecticut. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for beginners but low handicappers will also find it to be a fun round. The holes are fairly straightforward though there are some fairways that have very narrow landing areas that will test the accuracy of even the best golfers. Numerous bunkers are strategically placed along the undulating greens and water also comes into play on the occasional hole. The golf course starts out gently but becomes progressively more challenging on the back nine. The most memorable hole on the golf course, the par-3 12th, is a water hole that features an intimidating island green.

Third: Excellent short par-3, including this rolling and tricky green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Sixth: the view from about 50 yards of its green. It stretches 554 yards from the blues. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Sixth: from behind the same hole. Downhill drive, followed by gradual uphill climb to green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Seventh; Great, strategic short par-3 with six bunkers in landing zone. This is the largest. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Island par 3 Photo submitted by Tim6164739 on 09/24/2013
Great Condition
The course is in great condition with a very challenging layout. The weather was cold and damp so pace of play was under 4 hrs. Enjoyed the day and course
Great round
I enjoy this course. Good value and nice people. Mostly challenging. Good variety of holes.
Fun Course
The only issue is the pace of play! No need for a round to take 5 1/2 hours! Never once did I see a Marshal. Course in good condition and would play again!
:):)
Very nice course. Fairways and greens are in great shape. Surprised how fast the greens were. Staff at the pro shop is very pleasant.
I would recommend this course especially for the island green hole :)
great spring golf
the weather was a little chilly and breezy but the course was in great shape. Always a pleasure to play golf there.
An Underrated track (in my opinion)
You should play the blue tees (the day we played, there's wasn't much difference between the whites and blues). From the blues, the track measures about 5,700 yards, but be aware that there's not of "width" to the course. Fairways are fairly tight and doglegs are narrow at their corners. Overall, a really good challenge for the low- and mid-handicap golfer.
For 03/09, the course was in really good shape. I've played this course at different times during the season; it's always in great shape.
Icing on the cake: the true island green on #12!!!
Too much time
Pace of play was problem, course staff seemed uninterested, unaware or both. Did not seem to understand that 2 hrs for the first 7 holes was a problem. May want to get someone to manage the course on a more professional level.
Backside tougher, lot longer than card says
Had i known about cart path only, i would not have payed. Course was not much fun with little roll (i missed 2 fairways). Tough cpurse. Gps on carts would be nice feature. No available. I prob will play again under drier conditions
Exciting Course
I like playing this golf course because each and every hole is unique and different from each other.
excellent value
staff very friendly course in excellent cond. play a little slow not bad well worth the price
Great Value
played with my son after booking through golf now. We found it to be very enjoyable course. Many different challenges including island green and some accuracy required target golf. Greens rolled very well.
Tony
Course was in great shape and the saff was very good!
A must play
This course is as good as everyone says it is. Great challenging layout, some holes are target golf and need to be played like it. Everyone on staff was friendly and courteous. I got paired up with 3 great guys and had great round on beautiful day. Island green needs a bullseye or it will cost you strokes and balls. Tee boxes clean, bunkers raked and greens are fast but receptive and not rock hard. Play Here.
Keep Coming Back!
Traditions is one a several local courses that I play over and over. This is due to the good condition of the course and interesting hole layouts. Rick and his staff are excellent. Plus the bar and restaurant are convenient.
The "go-to" course
This course has it all. Love the feared island hole on 12. Back 9 is tougher than the front. Course in good condition, the price is usually right. Cart girl comes around often for food and beverages.
Pretty good
Overall this course was ok. I would not pay the full price green fee to play there though.
Nice course
I have played at Traditions half a dozen times this year. Course is in great shape. Staff is always very friendly.
Had a fun day
Course in very good shape, plenty of challenging holes. Very friendly staff. Food/beer after round was excellent.
Short But Narrow Course
My wife and I played here yesterday. Course has some very narrow holes and position golf is necessary. A fun course to play.
Nice course with a few interesting challenges.
This course heavily favors precision over length, especially on the narrow back 9. Early morning weekday play felt like I had the place to myself for most of the round.

Was at the course all day on December 30th, the course was not crowded and the pace was good. Carts were restricted to path only but no other issues. The staff here does a great job, the course is in great shape. Players forget that it's up to them to show up on time (15 minutes early) for their t-time, not all facilities offer "all you can play" rates or "twilight" rates, even in the fall or winter months and you should play what you pay for in order 1 through 9 or 1 through 18, no jumping around.
