Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club
About
Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club (formerly known as The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford) is one of the most affordable rounds in the area and it has received praise as one of the best golf courses in Connecticut. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for beginners but low handicappers will also find it to be a fun round. The holes are fairly straightforward though there are some fairways that have very narrow landing areas that will test the accuracy of even the best golfers. Numerous bunkers are strategically placed along the undulating greens and water also comes into play on the occasional hole. The golf course starts out gently but becomes progressively more challenging on the back nine. The most memorable hole on the golf course, the par-3 12th, is a water hole that features an intimidating island green.

excellent value
staff very friendly course in excellent cond. play a little slow not bad well worth the price
Great Value
played with my son after booking through golf now. We found it to be very enjoyable course. Many different challenges including island green and some accuracy required target golf. Greens rolled very well.
Tony
Course was in great shape and the saff was very good!
A must play
This course is as good as everyone says it is. Great challenging layout, some holes are target golf and need to be played like it. Everyone on staff was friendly and courteous. I got paired up with 3 great guys and had great round on beautiful day. Island green needs a bullseye or it will cost you strokes and balls. Tee boxes clean, bunkers raked and greens are fast but receptive and not rock hard. Play Here.
Keep Coming Back!
Traditions is one a several local courses that I play over and over. This is due to the good condition of the course and interesting hole layouts. Rick and his staff are excellent. Plus the bar and restaurant are convenient.
The "go-to" course
This course has it all. Love the feared island hole on 12. Back 9 is tougher than the front. Course in good condition, the price is usually right. Cart girl comes around often for food and beverages.
Pretty good
Overall this course was ok. I would not pay the full price green fee to play there though.
Nice course
I have played at Traditions half a dozen times this year. Course is in great shape. Staff is always very friendly.
Had a fun day
Course in very good shape, plenty of challenging holes. Very friendly staff. Food/beer after round was excellent.
Short But Narrow Course
My wife and I played here yesterday. Course has some very narrow holes and position golf is necessary. A fun course to play.
Nice course with a few interesting challenges.
This course heavily favors precision over length, especially on the narrow back 9. Early morning weekday play felt like I had the place to myself for most of the round.
Worth the time
Course was in good shape and teed off exactly on time which is great for a Sunday afternoon. Public course that looks like it is trying to provide a good experience on a course with some unique holes.
Requires more accuracy and thinking than most courses on the back nine...
LOVE THIS COURSE!
Met the assistant pro in my travels, so I thought I would check it out. Superb conditions - not a blade of grass out of place on a sprawling property. One two quibbles: the range is short and a little unkempt, and the 17th is downright bizarre. 17 plays like 280 from the tips, but is maybe a 260 carry uphill. So you lay up, right? Only the layup zone is barely visible and smaller than the island 12th green to land it on. They actually put a sand bucket out there to aim at, too.
Good round
It was a beautiful day. The course was in great shape. And we played okay, but it was a good day out there.
Great greens
Mgmt does a great job with this course. Hold your breath on the bridge after 17.
Good value
Great back nine. Course is in great shape and greens are quick. Good value.
Through Hill and Dale
Located adjacent to I-91 in Wallingford, I found "The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford" an excellent golf course. This was my first time playing here and the tee boxes, cart paths, fairways and greens were all in superb condition. I played on a Tuesday morning at a special club rate of $32 with cart. Our pace of play was fast and no one was behind us. Although short at 6120 yards from the back tees, this course is long on trouble with the back nine playing tougher than the front. We played from the 5400 yard whites but would have preferred the 5881 yard blues. I was out voted. Most holes have various problems the average golfer must deal with. No hole was easy. Club choice and accuracy off the tee is crucial on many holes.
There are some long distances between some holes as the course traverses hills, sidewalks, roads, and railroad tracks through condos, homes and woodland. The course is quite hilly, especially the back nine and a cart is highly recommended. Large high-power lines dominate some fairways. A do-over is allowed if one is hit.
The 1st hole may lure some into a false sense of easy things to come as the fairway is wide to start your round, then an evil spirit take over and the course narrows and becomes a lot tougher. The 11th and 17th holes have forced carries over brush, but very detailed signage, with carry and end-of-fairway distances, is provided. The course has some distinctive features. For example: a true island green awaits at 12. Although short at 155 yards (back tees) the 12th green is a very small target. Another rare feature is the trestle bridge that brings golfers from the 17th green over railroad tracks to the 18th tee box. To end your round, the par three 18th features a two level green separated by a narrow funnel. Pin placement and tee shot can make this short hole routine or a real challenge.
There were only three minor problems, otherwise I would have rated it 4.5. Directional signage from the 1st green to the 2nd tee and from the 10th green to the 11th tee would be nice for first-time players like us. Finally, it was irritating to find pumpkin? shells on most of the greens. Idiot!
I play over 25 public courses in CT each season and this course ranks among the ten best I’ve played in the past five years.
I highly recommend this course to any level player. Just bring a few extra balls for #12.
A Good Year
Played 27 holes on June 25th of 2015 and really enjoyed myself. The course, especially the greens are in very good shape, they run true, not overly fast but smooth and well manicured. The course is not long, a little tricky, driver needed but don't over play it as fairways are thin in places. Rough is challenging but playable. Staff are helpful, courteous, and overall a nice course to play more than once.
Excellent condition at the tradition
Booked a tee time for half price through golf now and I was pleasantly surprised. This nice shortish course has an island green that looks very similar to the 17th at sawgrass. The greens are fast and are in nearly perfect condition. The staff was very nice and I really enjoyed my round here.
