Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club
About
Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club (formerly known as The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford) is one of the most affordable rounds in the area and it has received praise as one of the best golf courses in Connecticut. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for beginners but low handicappers will also find it to be a fun round. The holes are fairly straightforward though there are some fairways that have very narrow landing areas that will test the accuracy of even the best golfers. Numerous bunkers are strategically placed along the undulating greens and water also comes into play on the occasional hole. The golf course starts out gently but becomes progressively more challenging on the back nine. The most memorable hole on the golf course, the par-3 12th, is a water hole that features an intimidating island green.

Island par 3 Photo submitted by Tim6164739 on 09/24/2013
Front and back played like 2 different interesting courses. Lots of challenging holes.
Fairways in excellent shape. Fairly tight with quite a few holes where you have to hit landing areas in order to hit the next shot. Lots of up-hill and down-hill lies. A few blind shots, as well a nice island par 3. Five greens had been recently aerated, so that affected some putts, and the course was quite crowded which resulted in waiting on lots of shots.
greens are fast, hole locations challenging par 3's well guarded
holes not real long played from the whites back 9 harder than the front
the course was in great shape.
My first trip here. Play was slow course was full we had a tournament go off ahead of us. The course was in beautiful condition greens were perfect. the views were great. My wife and I had great round very smooth play even with it being slow. The staff was very frendly.
Well maintained, challenging, great value!
I played 3 times at The Tradition Golf Club At Wallingford this year. I enjoyed it every time. The course is well maintained, the tee boxes are nice; the fairways are smooth, with nice cut; the greens are in great shape, with very few dry spots. The course is not long, but narrow, requires precision shots, penalty is severe for bad shots; greens are consistent, some holes have tough placement; some bunkers need more sands. The 3 times I played, there were groups in front of us and behind us but the pace was very comfortable, very little to no waiting and no pressure from behind. We played both blue tees and white tees. The difference in distance is not much but the difference in scores is huge. It could be mental, but for amateurs 10 yards can make a huge difference.
great course but they let us out after a tournoment today which was a bad move it took over 5 hours to play
great course, but took way to long to play 18 because of the tournament
Well maintained.
The course was a pleasure to play. It has enough hazards to make you think about your shots, yet short enough to be able to score well. The only issue is the greens which may be the hardest I have ever putted. There is not a straight putt on the course. The pin placements on several holes were extreme for the average golfer. On several holes my putt almost stopped 2-3 inches from the hole, only to then roll 10-15 feet away. Otherwise I loved the course.
needs rangers
moderately challenging course ,could be great with a little attention. Main problem,NO supervision of pace of play or behavior on course. Also short staff in the front:1person cart person & starter. However staff was very friendly & accomodating.
Very nice course to play
A challenging course but fun to play. Great staff. The ups and downs make this course what it is
A pleasant experience on a well maintained course.
Tradition offers 2 distinct types of golf. The front is a traditional layout with a signature 9th hole where bogey is a good score. The back features target golf with forced carries and blind shots. The island green 12th hole is the highlight of the back nine. If you're on your game a mid 80's round is possible for the (15-18 handicap) golfer. However, if you are spraying it the back can be a disaster.
This course was fairly well maintained. The greens were all in good shape.
The fairways were narrow in many spots but the open up as you play. The back nine was far more challenging than the front nine. The 12th hole, was a nightmare for me but friendly to others in the group. Take your time and bring extra balls to drop.
We couldn't turn down the deal from Golf Now. If I see another, I will definitely be playing here again. Also, there were some great deals in the pro shop.
Tight and winding at times
I've played here before and I usually wonder after I am done, why did I play here again. I'm not a fan of tight fairways and I hate houses on courses. This course can be very challenging if you spray the balls every now and then. The people there are nice, but only so nice. Everything seems to be rushed here. I also didn't understand why they put my twosome together with a couple of kids when there was NOBODY out in front of us. made for slow play.
Several holes unfair to average golfer
This course needs to establish another set of tees for the senior golfer. Several holes can not be reached in two shots for a par four. The blue tees they have set presently are right near the white tees. There are no rangers to speed up play. Last round was over 5 hours. Their grill wasn't even open on the weekend for morning coffee
The talk on the morning drive and PGA satellite for over a year was to play it forward and make it fun to play and give a person who can't hit it far a SHOT at par four hitting the greens in two as well as slow play. Apparently Traditions hasn't been listening.
Take a look at Timberland Golf Course. They have the gold tees and take care of those golfers who can't hit it like a Pro
Now take a lesson
Great for your average player
The course is managed very well and the pros in the staff is very helpful. The pros in the shop are also very helpful and friendly.
course was in good shape
when they put you behind 5 players in front of you and you have to wait every shot not my kind of course. I didn't think they put out 5sums especially on weekends
The coutse had a variety of holes that were challanging.
Local knowledge is a must. Some holes seemed wedged in to complete 18 holes. Placement of shots was at a high premium.
Great course.
Course in great condition. Greens were super nice. Would definitely play here again!
Good course. Play it a lot.
This course offers two types of golf. The front nine is fairly open with six par fours, two par threes, and one par five. All are enjoyable to play and modestly challenging. The back nine has a few holes that I would call target holes. The 11th has a dog leg left that is best to land the ball on a landing area on your tee shot. The 12th is a par three island hole that is challenging but doable. The 16th and 17th have marsh areas with long landing zones in the center. The 18th is a short par three but is more challenging than it looks. I have enjoyed playing this course on numerous occasions.
