Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club
About
Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club (formerly known as The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford) is one of the most affordable rounds in the area and it has received praise as one of the best golf courses in Connecticut. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for beginners but low handicappers will also find it to be a fun round. The holes are fairly straightforward though there are some fairways that have very narrow landing areas that will test the accuracy of even the best golfers. Numerous bunkers are strategically placed along the undulating greens and water also comes into play on the occasional hole. The golf course starts out gently but becomes progressively more challenging on the back nine. The most memorable hole on the golf course, the par-3 12th, is a water hole that features an intimidating island green.

Second Hole: Straightforward, uphill par-4 on which drive must cross over a fairway ‘valley.’ Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Third: Excellent short par-3, including this rolling and tricky green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Sixth: the view from about 50 yards of its green. It stretches 554 yards from the blues. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Seventh; Great, strategic short par-3 with six bunkers in landing zone. This is the largest. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Disappointing Day
The course condition including the greens were ok, but it does not really count when I was not even able to complete the round and obviously paid in full about $48. 12 holes in 4.5 hours is not acceptable, which would work out to about 6+ hours for a round of golf. Played as a single and was paired up with a threesome. Playing here for the first time, I had no clue what to except on the pace of play so, on the first tee, I just asked them how the pace of play was and they said "We should complete the front 9 in about 3 hours", and they were spot on. Unfortunately I had to stop after 12 holes as I did not plan for a 6+ hour round. Having said this, the 12th hole (island green) is beautiful and there are some other decent holes as well.
Solid course
Good Value for the money. Good course with some challenging holes. Island green is fun.
First week of April!
Aside from being a bit wet ( it rained a bunch the night before) the course was in great shape, including the greens.
First Round of the Year
Thought the course looked great for the type of conditions we've had around here in the last couple of months. Some work to be done but definitely worth the price at $19 for 18 w/ cart
Easy to play front none but be prepared for the back
Husband and wife couples and we all made on the island green. Awesome, had a great time.
Fun and challenging course with a variety of different holes which will test your shot making ability.
I really like this course. There are a great variety of holes including the island green 12th hole par 3. The course is always in great shape and the greens roll beautifully. The staff is great and the restaurant offers really good food. You can't go wrong here.
average
Decent course, decent shape. Good price. Some good holes, some are a bit strange. Some local knowledge would help for some of the holes on the back 9. 18th hole is a bit quirky.
Pleasantly Surprised
Had never played here before but had heard that it was nice. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised. A fun course that has some easy and then some real challenging holes. There is some elevation changes to the holes but it is not funky, just follows the landscape. The final few holes were definitely tricky but not unfair. The red tees were placed well so that my wife and I were playing our second shots near each other, harder for her but better than some courses we have played. For this late in the season the course was in good condition and greens were very good. I will be giving The Tradition another go in the future.
Good course for the money
I've played Wallingford a few times, the course is always in good shape and relatively cheap compared to others around. Recently has taken a bit longer than a normal round, but I chalk that up to coincidence of who's playing in front of you.
Greens well maintained; a few quirky holes, decent rate of play.
Good value for the buck. Decent rate of play. Greens very well maintained. Good mix of holes with a few a little quirky.
Fun course. Nicely maintained.
Always an enjoyable round. Course is in very good condition. Back nine is the definition of target golf. Island green 12th hole is a fun feature!
very good course well maintained
play there once weekly some challenging holes course is in great shape greens roll fast
Interesting Course
Slow play - fault of other players not the course. Playing through as a single was never offered and probably wouldn't have matter anyway with other slow groups out there. Plays should play from the blue tees on this short course.
nice course but slow
Had to wait additional 20 minutes after tee time to play so a handful of four somes could go off. No starter controlling them or pace of play. Every hole there were 2-3 groups waiting. consistently waited 10-15 minutes on every tee. 3 hours to play front 9.. gave up on back after another hour and a half for 3 holes. Was told prior course was not undergoing aeration at the time but upon arriving they had just done 15-18 that morning. Horrible experience...said some thing to a staff member who seemed to care less.
Nice elevation changes
I had a great time playing this course with amazing views and elevation changes. Requires some straight driving at times and plenty up hill greens. Holes vary greatly and the 12th water hole was fun to play.
Great Course for all levels
If you're a beginner, you'll appreciate the openness (on the front). If you're a skilled played you'll appreciate the change in pitch, slope and a few very fun hazards.
The back 9 is more difficult than the front. Stay left on the back. Very difficult to have a bad time here. Great overall course with great conditions.
Very fun course with a great staff and attentive bev cart staff ;)
Good weekend tee time and good value
Was able to get a good morning tee time for 4 on 3 days notcie.
Course was in very good condition except last 4 greens were aerated and dressed with sand. Preceeding players left many unrepaired ball marks. Pace of play (~4 1/2 hr) was ok for a weekend. One of our group dropped out and I was able to cancel and later add a substitute - no problem. Great meal at the bar afterwards.
Fun course. Back 9 is challenging
Play here a few times a week. The lady at the counter is a sweetheart! What ever you do DO MOT PLAY HERE THE DAY AFTER IT RAINS! Course does not hold water well!
Challenging but I91 is one fairway over
If you could take his course and put it somewhere secluded and quiet it would be a great golf experience. The course layout is challenging and the greens are the most challenging part of this course. They are in great condition and fast. No gimmies. However it runs parallel to i91 for a few holes and its extremely noisy and annoying. On top of that power lines traverse the course which further adds to the urban experience. Play it once to see for yourself but serenity lies elsewhere.
