Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club
About
Wheeler Family Traditions Golf Club (formerly known as The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford) is one of the most affordable rounds in the area and it has received praise as one of the best golf courses in Connecticut. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for beginners but low handicappers will also find it to be a fun round. The holes are fairly straightforward though there are some fairways that have very narrow landing areas that will test the accuracy of even the best golfers. Numerous bunkers are strategically placed along the undulating greens and water also comes into play on the occasional hole. The golf course starts out gently but becomes progressively more challenging on the back nine. The most memorable hole on the golf course, the par-3 12th, is a water hole that features an intimidating island green.

Third: Excellent short par-3, including this rolling and tricky green. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/19/2020

Island par 3 Photo submitted by Tim6164739 on 09/24/2013
A pleasant experience on a well maintained course.
Tradition offers 2 distinct types of golf. The front is a traditional layout with a signature 9th hole where bogey is a good score. The back features target golf with forced carries and blind shots. The island green 12th hole is the highlight of the back nine. If you're on your game a mid 80's round is possible for the (15-18 handicap) golfer. However, if you are spraying it the back can be a disaster.
This course was fairly well maintained. The greens were all in good shape.
The fairways were narrow in many spots but the open up as you play. The back nine was far more challenging than the front nine. The 12th hole, was a nightmare for me but friendly to others in the group. Take your time and bring extra balls to drop.
We couldn't turn down the deal from Golf Now. If I see another, I will definitely be playing here again. Also, there were some great deals in the pro shop.
Tight and winding at times
I've played here before and I usually wonder after I am done, why did I play here again. I'm not a fan of tight fairways and I hate houses on courses. This course can be very challenging if you spray the balls every now and then. The people there are nice, but only so nice. Everything seems to be rushed here. I also didn't understand why they put my twosome together with a couple of kids when there was NOBODY out in front of us. made for slow play.
Several holes unfair to average golfer
This course needs to establish another set of tees for the senior golfer. Several holes can not be reached in two shots for a par four. The blue tees they have set presently are right near the white tees. There are no rangers to speed up play. Last round was over 5 hours. Their grill wasn't even open on the weekend for morning coffee
The talk on the morning drive and PGA satellite for over a year was to play it forward and make it fun to play and give a person who can't hit it far a SHOT at par four hitting the greens in two as well as slow play. Apparently Traditions hasn't been listening.
Take a look at Timberland Golf Course. They have the gold tees and take care of those golfers who can't hit it like a Pro
Now take a lesson
Great for your average player
The course is managed very well and the pros in the staff is very helpful. The pros in the shop are also very helpful and friendly.
course was in good shape
when they put you behind 5 players in front of you and you have to wait every shot not my kind of course. I didn't think they put out 5sums especially on weekends
The coutse had a variety of holes that were challanging.
Local knowledge is a must. Some holes seemed wedged in to complete 18 holes. Placement of shots was at a high premium.
Great course.
Course in great condition. Greens were super nice. Would definitely play here again!
Good course. Play it a lot.
This course offers two types of golf. The front nine is fairly open with six par fours, two par threes, and one par five. All are enjoyable to play and modestly challenging. The back nine has a few holes that I would call target holes. The 11th has a dog leg left that is best to land the ball on a landing area on your tee shot. The 12th is a par three island hole that is challenging but doable. The 16th and 17th have marsh areas with long landing zones in the center. The 18th is a short par three but is more challenging than it looks. I have enjoyed playing this course on numerous occasions.
Very challenging course. It was in excellent shape.
From the Blue tees, this course is actually more than I can handle! I normally shoot in the mid eighties. On most holes, you must drive it straight, or you're in trouble.
beautiful course
I play this course often. It is challenging but the front 9 have forgiving fairways. The back 9 is beautiful but unforgiving. You will love this course!
Good course.
The course is well maintained. The layout is tight and penalizing for inaccurate shots on the majority of holes. Plenty of hazards, bordering town houses, and up hill, down hill slopes. The greens are in great shape and true, but were slow this day. The power lines on the 1st, 13th and 14th holes can challenge your play. Overall, I like the course.
Very nice greens, well maintained course.
A nice track, good mixture of holes, A challenge for all skill levels
nice course and not too far away
fun front nine for me....very challenging back. great staff and conditions on the course were very good for so early in the season.
good day and good course to play
Traditions is always in great shape and very accomodating
Fun short course
When we first arrived they grabbed our bags out of our vehicle! We paid, stood there and waited to get a key for the carts... The worst complain I have to say... Was the cart. It kept slowing down as we went uphill sometimes we needed to move out of the way because of how slow it was. Definite attention may be required to the carts mechanically... Course was fun to play ... Some sand bunkers need attention. But otherwise the greens were in good shape. And the rough was playable!
course can be very challenging
I play this course a few times a year. Most of the time in good shape , and the price is right.
The course is well maintained with exceptional greens
To play a course at this time of year in Connecticut is special. The course is well maintained and the fairways were cleared of leaves, which in the middle of the fall season is hard to do. The greens were fast and true. Pin placements on this day were set as if you were in tournament play, which I enjoyed tremendously. I would recommend this course for those of you who are looking for a challenging but fair course that has a very good pace of play. The 12th hole island green looks easy enough but I guarantee you'll be talking to yourself once played. I'll be back!
