Tradition Golf Club at Oak Lane
About
Tradition Golf Club at Oak Lane is situated in the quiet town of Woodbridge, just 20 minutes from New Haven. Formerly known as Oak Lane County Club, the course was both renamed and renovated when it was acquired by the management team at The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford. Many of the holes were updated but the golf course retained its challenging but playable nature. Though the course is player friendly enough to appeal to players of all skill levels, there are still several challenges in store. Numerous strategically placed bunkers lurk along the greens and towering trees also frame most of the holes. The holes are mostly straightforward with a few tricky doglegs to keep you on your toes. You'll also be confronted with the occasional water hole. Both your accuracy and short-game skills will be tested at Tradition Golf Club at Oak Lane.

It was just ... "OK"
For early July, the course conditions were a little beat up (especially bunkers and tee boxes (can the Grounds Crew spend some time cleaning up the tee boxes? Please?) . Extreme slow play with the foursome in front of us having two "first time ever" players (we witnessed many whiffs, and 20-yard shots). The Ranger was less than useless, so we had to take the initiative and jump forward, skipping a hole in order to avoid a 6-hour round. We accept that this slow play was just our unfortunate luck of the draw getting stuck behind this foursome. However, the Ranger needs to be proactive, and ask them to step aside and allow us to play through.
Always a favorite
Oak Lane is a good course and consistently in good shape.
Out of Town Course
Had the opportunity to play this course while staying in Hamden, CT. Great Track with fast greens and subtle breaks which are tough to read. The front 9 is more of a challenge. Once you learn the speed of the greens and understand the positioning off the tee it you want to come back. I highly recommend this course. The staff was nice. This will be my away course when visiting the Hamden area again.
Great course to play
I've played this course many times in the past and even though it is a bit out of the way for me (30 minute drive), I really enjoy coming here. The people are always great and go out of their way to make the experience a good one. It's the first time I've played there early in the season and found soggy, windy and cold conditions, but having played there before, I know this all improves by May. It is a challenging course (I have a 12 handicap) but the greens and fairways are well maintained and it's fun to play. I recommend it!
Best in the Area
Played on Sunday and the course was in the best condition in the area. The greens are spectacular! The staff was great, they treated us like we were VIP's all day. The food in the bar was great too!
Its worth it
I have been playing Oak Lanes for years, its a good course, and some very tough putting greans.my favorite hole is 9, a par 5 down from a raised tee box, over water on the 2nd shot to a 2 tier green, I would recommend this course to anyone that is hitting at least low 100s with real score keeping, I like to walk even though I pay for a cart and you are able to walk during the week but not on weekends
course is convenient for me but last time it reminded me why i and my friends stopped booking. for the most part it the attitude of the people ruining it. not all mind you but certainly most especially management. I find them arrogant and certainly they make you feel as though they are doing you a favor by letting you play or perhaps they do not care for those that have booked with a discounted rate! As for the course at best it is not at its greatest certainly does not justify their normal rates. The previous time I played they had aerated but did not notify the customers. OK for the most part I understand but we went through nine holes and half of them did not even have the flags up. One they had tow holes as they left and walked away from the green and probably forgot they did so. this was in the middle of the day! I can go on but frankly I don't want to waste my time on this. It will be a while before I consider playing at Oak Lane again. Now I understand why my friends do not like playing there.
Good value even though the greens were just aerated. Will go back once they heal. Good enough track for a change of pace. Lucky to get paired with a regular since there are some quirky tee shots.
4-18-17
The course was in very good condition for the mid-April season, that is with the exception of the bunkers. THEY on the other hand were nothing more than gravel and probably will be for the season as I do not remember them being anything but a 'gravely' mix at any other time. Aside from that, the greens were okay, certainly not that of a private club or even semi-private club. Still though, Oak Lane remains one of my favorites for its design, layout, speed, and locale. So when you compare some of the other courses nearby, Oak Lane works for me.
Nice Course / Good value
I have played here many times, close to my home and very reasonable. The staff is very nice, always helpful, and friendly. The course is in ok shape, some of the greens are always in sad shape. The bunkers have concrete not sand, so avoid them. Fairways are ok, need tidying up. This course is good value for the price, but the pace can be very slow. Unfortunately like many courses in the area, it needs repairs and upkeep, I am sure it is a money issue. The carts are old and tired. The people who work here are great and the layout is nice overall.
Nice Course-Worth the time
Wnt in the middle of the afternoon weekday, so the pace of play was great. Weather was not as expected, but not the courses fault there. Spring conditions with some bare spots and uneven grass, but nothing a good rain and some fertilizer could not fix. Like the way course plays and have been before. Played front nine with par 5 to start. Not my best round, but not too bad. If not there before, give it a try. Be glad you did.
No flags
Flags and cups were out of the ground and spread all over it was a treasure hunt and we had a hard time finding everything and we had to call the club house to get it fixed. Not a good day
early gem
with winter not to damaging to that point the course was in great shape for March. also a course if you live in CT. that you have to try. can be walked but challenging at times.
Ball marks, Divots and very coarse sand
Early season and very wet after a lot of snow and rain. Most traps were filled with water and those that were not were unplayable not due to the sand being wet but rather due to the sand being basically construction-grade or ever worse very thin with hard dirt underneath.
You would have thought you were playing in the US Open with the crazy pin placements.
The golfers seem to have a hard time replacing divots and fixing their ball marks on the green. One golfer somewhere ahead of us seemed to be taking his frustrations out on the inside edge of the cup, perhaps from slamming the flag back in or something. Ugh. Not the fault of the course, but maybe some signs should be posted reminding players of proper etiquette and their responsibility to leave the course in the same or better condition than when they arrive.
Great Course
My wife and I were in the CT area. We decided to play this course. I'm a native CT guy. I'm glad I did play here! Course was in great shape! Greens were slow for me. But for a beginner like my wife it's great for her! Its pretty wide open and very forgiving off the fairway. Meaning the fairways were pretty wide! It was hard to find my ball the whole round due to the leaves falling down. Other than that it was a great course for the $. My friend went too and loved the course! Will be back there again! During prime time golf season! The whole staff was polite and very helpful explaining. Only thing I was upset with. Was I wasn't told they were closing early at 3pm and carts had to be in by than. Next time they need to be up front about that to costumers.
