West at White Pines Golf Course
About
Situated just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, White Pines Golf Club has been a popular spot for both locals and visitors. The club offers two courses, the East and the West. The West Course is longer than the East by 400 yards and considered slightly more challenging. The layout is relatively tight and there is an abundance of trees, which means you'll need to be accurate to do well. The greens are large and challenging with difficult-to-read breaks. There is also minimal, but strategic bunkering along the greensides. The fairways provide plenty of variety with some that are narrow and heavily tree-lined and others that are wide with no trees in sight. The golf course has several challenging holes but it's forgiving enough for beginners to approach with confidence.

White Pines
We played on a day of an outing, luckily we were able to play the back 9 while they did a shotgun on the front 9. All worked out great!!!
4:15pm, back 9 first
I don't know if it's because the "cheaper" rates started at 4:15pm or what the deal was, but we were behind 6 groups of 4 players that were CRAZY SLOW!!!! There was NO marshal/ranger that was going around in a cart telling people to hurry up or anything. We ended up playing 10-15, skipping 16-18 to go to hole 1, played really quickly (1.25 hours) through the front 9, and then came back at the end of the day to finish up 16 - 18.
I just wish a ranger would have gone around and told some of these groups of 4 to play a scramble. Some of the golfers ahead were hitting an average of 80-100 yards from the tee, then another 80-100 from the second shot, rinse and repeat. The gents even had carts but moving at a snail's pace to find their lost balls.
Trust me, it's not about how old you are (my dad's a lively 85 year old who plays at a solid 16.8) so I'm not trying to shame the old guys. Some of these guys ahead had no thought about how slow they were moving and holding up the traffic behind.
My friend and I finished our round in less than 3 hours (even after going back to 16-18), and the guys originally in front of us were still on the 6th hole.
Last thing I have to say about this place - it's beautiful BUT, players don't rake the bunkers, they don't fill divots, and the greens are pock full of bumps, divots, etc. Hard to play a nicely sloped green that has a bunch of bumps/holes along the way. My friend and I spent more time cleaning up others' messes than we did taking our time to play and putt.
Annoyed
The condition of the course on the fairways was fine like usual but hole 11 is a joke it’s completely under repair and seems like the grass hasn’t been cut in a long time on every hole and the bunkers were the worst I’ve ever seen like there wasn’t even sand in them and hole 17 tee box having to tee up on a mat that isn’t even flat to the ground completely uneven and messed up. Like at that point have everyone tee off from the red tees. I’m very disappointed in how the course looked and play today and I usually like going to that course and not sure if I’m going to wanna go back unless something changes.
Great 2 Courses for the price
I enjoyed the West course and found it to be in pretty strong condition with a good layout that is challenging but not punishing to the weekend golfer.
I did not play the east course, but like that they have two options and some variation. The day we played was extremely hot and the on course water coolers were both full and very cold which was nice.
The clubhouse and various amenities were better than expected for the rate paid.
I will absolutely come back for another wallet friendly round.
Basicaly the etiquette here on any given day is nil. There was no Marshall at 1pm, The only area they patrol anyone is the first T and the cart return. if you enjoy the day drinking bar scene with your $108 for 2 golfer weekday round. If you never stopped smoking pot recreationaly as a child and your in your 60s.... this is most definitely your spot for networking If you're into. parking your cart inches from the group in front of you on the tee box while they wait for the fairway to clear so you can now talk amongst your buddies in your group, , And yes most of the holes have plenty of cart path between the last hole and the tee box... with shade. And you take an issue with that.Well you're just not down with the scene here..
