West at White Pines Golf Course
About
Situated just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, White Pines Golf Club has been a popular spot for both locals and visitors. The club offers two courses, the East and the West. The West Course is longer than the East by 400 yards and considered slightly more challenging. The layout is relatively tight and there is an abundance of trees, which means you'll need to be accurate to do well. The greens are large and challenging with difficult-to-read breaks. There is also minimal, but strategic bunkering along the greensides. The fairways provide plenty of variety with some that are narrow and heavily tree-lined and others that are wide with no trees in sight. The golf course has several challenging holes but it's forgiving enough for beginners to approach with confidence.

nice well maintained course with fast greens
everything was great except its very slow play with no one pushing anyone to move on...
Great course with great greens and fairways
Beautifull course! Lots of trees tho.
Go west young man!
Always loved the west course and it didn't disappoint.
The only issue was pace of play. 1 group held up 4.
Waited on every hole and every shot. Rangers have to work on slow players letting faster players play through. Other than that it was a fine day...
My Favorite new course
I had never played here before and was so pleasantly surprised at what a beautiful course this was. The Greens were the pristine I have seen all year long. The level of difficulty was just right with plenty of trees and just enough water. This is my new Favorite course. Great value for the experience.
Slow Round
Played the west course-nothing too special. A fair amount of trees, some water, but mostly straight holes with some bunkers to deal with. Some of the holes were interesting doglegs, but for the most part the course isn't too exciting.
Course conditions were incredibly slow, which can't be controlled.....however, we called the clubhouse after 3 hours and 11 holes to get a raincheck, which they denied and said they would just send a ranger. Well the ranger came to watch the groups in front of us but didn't say anything. And the ranger at the turn said to expect it to be slow because there was an outing in front of us. An outing in front of us is a poor excuse to make us play almost a 6 hour round. Yes it was probably a once off experience where it was very slow, however when we asked the clubhouse to do something about it and have players play faster, they did NOTHING, which is poor management. We called it after 16 holes and 4 hours 45 minutes when there were 2 groups on the tee at 17 in front of us. Plenty of courses in the area for the same price, better alternatives. (I must say the girl in the clubhouse was very apologetic and nice after we finished to complain about how slow it was. The other rangers were worthless)
Great staff.
Course play was extremely slow on front nine. Starter went out of his way to find an open nine for me to play for my back nine.
Be prepared to wait, wait, wait..
On the starter's hut off the first tee there reads a sign stating the round should take 4 hours and 15 min. Five and a half hours later, we completed our round. No rangers to move people along.
Sunday Slog
Got great rate, and despite knowing this course and it's deficiencies figured it was either this or no play.
The course has some nice holes but at some point they planted hundreds of unnecessary trees, many of which have been lost to ash borer, and removal has not been completed. So many holes are very tight and average golfers will spend a lot of shots pitching out.. The par 5's in particular are tough. Hole 11 badly is in need of a shorter set of tees for average golfers and a bigger green.
Course was in generally good condition though bunkers could use some work and rough around the greens was unnecessarily high.
Big issue was slow play. It took 4 hours 45 minutes for our group to play 16 holes (when I quit). Our foursome waited on every tee. Yes it was a Sunday, but I observed while on 11, that holes 13 and 14 were completely clear ahead of us and there was no ranger in sight all day.
THE COURSE IS IN GOOD SHAPE
GREAT DAY. FRONT NINE MOVED FAST. COURSE GREAT CONDITION
Course review
Course was in great shape. Despite the loss of so many ash trees, the course remains challenging. Some of the sand traps could use a little more sand. All in all great course for this early in the season. Thanks for your efforts.
Played on a very wet and cold day
I'm a bogey golfer and shot 134 on 27 holes - so right in line with my handicap would lead me to call this course average difficulty.
The course was in decent shape considering the standing water and mud from the heavy rain. The staff was friendly and encouraging despite the conditions. There were some areas needing tree clean up - to be expected this time of year. I thought this course was fair for the rate - not an exceptional value but fair.
goat ranch
this course is in terrible shape and has been for years.the bunkers have no drainage(the sand is more like light colored mud),cart paths are pothole infested garbage, carts are filthy messes, massive piles of cut down trees are everywhere.save your money and go to a decent golf course, not this piece of garbage.
Good place to play/ practice
Good course for beginners. Played by myself, staff was friendly. There was a foursome in front of me, and the ranger let me tee off before them so I didn't have to wait. He also offered me to play the west course. Back nine very narrow but fun.
slow play,
Even though they checked play speed and said
it is very slow, but nothing they did not do.
No Marshall.
Average course
White Pines East is pretty run of the mill and not bad for the price (I wouldn't pay more than $50; at higher rates there are better tracks to be had nearby). From the back tees the par 3s are challenging and the par 5s are probably going to take 3 shots to get home. The course is not in great shape. That said, we played early in the spring and perhaps they really turn it around as the season progresses. That would be a lot of work. The staff is very friendly and accomodating. There are not many solid public courses near downtown Chicago, so I expect I may be back at some point, probably when I don't want to pay $90 or $100 to play Harborside (or if it's full).
Poor Course Conditions
Apparently the course maintenance staff is still on winter vacation. Over a hundred trees either cut or blown over with branches all over the place. Choose another course until they clean this place up.
no carts
Course appears to be slightly more difficult than the slope rating. Some narrow tree-lined fairways. However many trees have been cut down most likely due due to the Emerald Ash bore. We played the Red course about 6400 yards and 127 slope. Not much undulation on the greens. Only drawback was there were no carts.
November Golf!
Anytime you can golf around here in November, EVERYTHING is Wonderful. The course was in good shape for this time of the year. Very sad to see so many trees that had to be cut down. Back nine is quite watery!
wish we would have known
We always enjoy playing white pines. My playing partner was recently disabled and needs the handicap cart (blue flag). We were told that they don't have handicap flags and besides that---it was cart path only. I offered my partner a choice if he wanted to play or cancel. He said, "Lets just do it". We had a great time and he still broke 90.
awesome day
Hey listen, I got a tee time right when I wanted it and at a great price. They don;t cut the grass every day but I;m good with that.
Finished 18 in 3.2 hours so played another 9 no Q's asked .
Way to go White Pines
