One of my favorite courses in Mchenry County
One of the few courses in the area where the driving range that you can actually hit from the grass. Redtail is a fun and challenging course. The crew there keep it in great shape. And the staff is always friendly and nice.

Two golf groups in front of us were late by 10-12 minutes which slowed everyone else behind our group. Starter should have cancelled them out completely.

Inconsistent pace of play assessment
My friend on I were paired with another two some and were on target to finish all 18 holes in 4 hours 45 minutes. One of the rangers notified us to pick up the pace of play because there were two open holes ahead. The request was unnecessary and caused for a bad experience the last 4 holes.
Just because there are two holes open ahead doesn’t mean we are slowing down pace of play. All groups have varying playing experience and needs to be properly assessed before being asked to speed up. Our group was really trying and not spending any time, if any for lost balls just so we can pick up the pace of play.
In the past, we experienced back ups and nothing was done by the rangers. We’ll think twice before coming back to this course and will relay our expience to others.
Golf is 4 hours for a foursome, cart or walking not matter which tee box your playing from. Not 4 hours and 45 minutes. I agree with the rangers. Pick up your ball and move on.
Staff
All the employees at this course are helpful and friendly. A young man accidentally drove his cart through the guardrail of a small bridge going over a creek. The man was not hurt and the car wound up not in the water, but needed several people to get it out. The staff took care of it in less than 20 minutes and the young man was able to finish his round. Some places would have charged to get the cart out. No here; just concern to make sure he was ok. This is just one example of the great attitude here. Kenny, Larry, and Kris at the bar deserve special mention.

Needs attention in a few areas
While I love to play Redtail, it has gone downhill since I last played the course. Cart paths are in major disrepair and the bunkers seem to have rocks everywhere. Course staff is always great.

Good Layout; time for a big facelift
Been playing this course for the last 6 years. Love the layout. Different looks and really forces you to think twice about club selection off the tee. 4 sets of tees (including women’s) that allow golfers of all abilities and ages to play decently and enjoy the round.
However, the course needs a major facelift. The cart paths are too worn and there are huge potholes in them. The drainage could use some upgrades as well, especially around bunkers and on flat/lower-lying fairways. Greens are in good shape though.
The clubhouse needs a rebuild as well. Still looks like a temporary structure. The course gets a lot of traffic and has done very well in the past 5 years, with tee times always sold out in spite of some steep pricing.
Time to put all those monies towards these upgrades.

Great Course, Great Value
New to the Northern burbs, so this was my first time playing Redtail and I thought the course was awesome. Great value for the money, $38 for 18 w/cart on a weekday....I thought the layout was really good, very player friendly. Greens have plenty of slope, which could make them very challending when they start moving the pin around to the different areas. The course has plenty of elevation changes and elevated tee boxes thoughout the course. I was suprised to find the greens rolling as well as they were for the 20th of March. I can't wait to get back here later this summer when the course is green and playing at it's full potential.....5 Stars!
