Needs work
Great bones, but quite neglected. Many dead trees and cart paths are horrible. Greens and fairways are nice, but don't hit a bad shot as you will be hitting off dirt.
Good shape! Challenging
Course is in good all around shape. Really enjoyed it. I even bought a shirt. Bust out the driver at Big Run!
Needs TLC
I’ve played at Big Run for years, but haven’t been there for around 20 years. In that time it seems like there has been a drop-off in maintenance. The cart paths were broken and bumpy, there were weeds and dead spots on the greens, fairways, and tees, edges were overgrown and undefined. Overall it’s looked better. It’s still a tough course, the greens are brutal, but it needs an overhaul. We have a good rate for twilight but I would’ve been upset if we paid $80 each. Pace was slow too, I just remember it being much nicer in the old days.
BIG RUN
Good layout. Cart paths are extremely bumpy they need a beverage cart and yardage markers
Poor Tee Time Management and Staff Etiquette
Course was fine but the tee times were scheduled 10 minutes apart. The tee time behind us tee’d off 3 minutes after our group. We played at a 4:30 pace (not fast but not slow). The course ranger approached us and blamed us for the entire course being backed up on a Sunday at 10:00AM. He then proceeded to watch us for the next few holes.
The group behind us was never in a position to go ahead, otherwise we would have let them play through.
When we finished playing, the group behind us was not able to be seen and finished 25 minutes after us.
We called to advise the pro shop what happened with the course ranger, and they told us to not come back.
Not a bad course outside of the cart paths and bridges needing major repair. Won’t return because of the staff etiquette.
Cow Pasture
For the amount of money this course costs it’s not worth it. The carts are about 100 years old and bounce all over the course. Keep all items in ur bag cuz they will fall out even in the cart. Fairways are in terrible shape with patches of dead grass and dirt all over with the occasional foot long grass in the middle of the fairway. I really don’t understand how a maintenance guy can go out there and think this is sufficient and I’m doing a great job, cuz ur not. Don’t get me going on the rough side. Too many trees block the rough it just creates dead spots under all trees and areas. Whoever the guy that checks you in is, is not a happy camper. They announce tee times over a microphone which can be heard from California. Just hire a starter….the bathrooms and amenities are disgusting with a 70 year old clubhouse with not much to choose from. the food is pre made grossness which they just toss on the grill. There is no ranger on the course to help move the tee times along so plan on a 6 hour round. Also a hitting bay with nets is in awful condition. Save ur money and go down the road to COG or Ruffled.
So/So
Was 1st one out so pace was ultra quick
Fairways were in rough shape in places
Greens for most part were in good shape
They were watering during play tee boxes which made a few very wet and traction wasnt great
Still needs some work
The course is in far better shape than in years past. The rough is finally being maintained, so you’re not losing a ball anytime you hit into it. The fairways were in pretty bad shape, lots of missing grass and craters where fairway used to be. Some of the bunkers need work, some are being redone and others they finally turned into grass. Tee boxes were in pretty rough shape, along with the cart paths. The greens were in good shape, they were running pretty quick even after some morning rain. The staff were fine. The amenities aren’t great, no range other than some nets with mats and a small practice area. The bar and club house are very outdated, but clean. The place still has a ways to go to return to any former glory.
Tough greens
Some of the toughest greens I’ve played. With Sunday pin placements, made some greens borderline ridiculous. I like tough greens but on 18 the placement was in a place where if you were putting even a couple feet above the hole and missed, the ball rolled 25+ feet off the green. Nobody behind us, we tried for 20 minutes.
That being said, I love this course.
Great course.
Big Fun. Challenging and mostly fair (some tough greens and pin placements), great layout, and great staff. Conditions have improved tremendously this year, I’m sure next year will be even better. Only gripe is the road being so close to holes 6 and 7, have been honked at during my backswing multiple times 🤧
