Gateway National Golf Links

About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Great time!
The course pushed our start time back, but only by about 10 minutes. They did this to pair up my friend and I with another two-some, but that two-some never showed.
Fairways and greens were in excellent shape. Some of the blue tee boxes, especially on the par 3s, were almost more sand than grass. Carts were nice, equipped with a GPS system showing your yardage and hole layout.
We waited a couple minutes on just about every hole, but that’s to be expected when the course is almost fully booked, and you’re playing as a two-some.
I got hot deal price, plus a 20% of discount, which made the course very reasonable. Not sure I’d ever pay their full weekend price, but definitely worth a visit at a nice discount.
5.5 hour round
I have played here a few times. This was my second time this year and both rounds have been the slowest rounds I’ve played this year. Today it was just myself and a friend we didn’t get paired up with another duo. There was two foursomes in front of us that never let us play through and long story short the round took us between 5.5-6 hours. The conditions of the course are the best in the area but the limited driving range space/lack of balls and slow rounds don’t justify the cost. I will unlikely be returning here.
Great condition with some exceptions
Course was great other than the greens are in rough shape as ball marks are not being repaired and it affected the puts. On a corse like this you would expect players to repair their ball marks?
Great shape!
The course was in phenomenal shape. Even
With a lot of rain of late the course drained really well and 90% cart rule. It’s pricey but that’s golf these days and a holiday weekend. Best condition of the public courses in the St. Louis area.
Beautiful course, very fun to play. Greens are nice but peppered with unfixed ball marks. Course also pushes for fast pace of play, ironically, I got stuck behind an incredibly slow group.
Impressive Conditions
You won't find better conditions on a public golf course in the St. Louis metro area this year. My son was in town this week and loves playing Gateway because of the bent grass fairways. He even commented Gateway is really in good shape.
On the weekend, the price is $100. They may have outpriced themselves because we were able to tee off 40 minutes early because of the empty tee times.
I think it is worth this because of the excellent conditions. Also, because other upscale courses like Annbriar & Far Oaks are running near $80 on the weekend. You won't find these 2 courses in the shape of Gateway. However, if you can play during the week in the $50-60 range - what a bargain this course is.
Get out and play Gateway this year!
Outstanding Conditions
Gateway National is in the best shape of any St. Louis metro club. Played the course during the week with a $56 senior rate.
Only thing to complain about was the pace of play. Other than that, the course was in great shape.
They had the snack shop at hole 10 open and a beverage cart was out the entire day.
The rate on the weekend is at near $100. I would only play the course during the week for nearly half the price.
Very pleasant experience!
Got to sneak out on a Thursday to play with my brother in from out of town. Love taking people to play Gateway that are from out of town for the beautiful views of downtown. Love the layout, course was in a great condition, but the best part was the extreme kindness of the employees at the course. All the girls selling drinks and food at the turn, were so friendly and pleasant. Really made our round more enjoyable. Keep up what you are doing on the service, it is outstanding!
Great condition
The course was beautiful and was very well maintained. The staff was super friendly, especially after telling them that it was my first time playing. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a great golf experience to play here at least once, they will not be disappointed.
Windy but Wonderful!
My partner and I showed up 2 hrs before our 12pm tee time. Sign in was easy! Friendly staff. Snack bar staff prepared our breakfast sandwich and juice Lockett split.
We took some time to hit some balls prior to our tee time on #10. Marshall’s couldn’t be friendlier. Snack driver came around often. Down side was that there was no water on the course. Hope that changes soon! And I get it but it was a little annoying when we would drive our carts close to restricted zones but guess that’s why the course is in such good shape. All in all… The rest was up to us to play well and just enjoy the “plush carpet” bent grass fairways this beautiful Winter Day!
Good Course To Play In The Winter
I always enjoy playing Gateway National. At a rate of $44 for early February, you can't beat that in the St. Louis area. The people there are very friendly and they even had a beverage cart out in February. I thought the greens were in great shape and putted smooth and were on the fast side. They have done their controlled burns of the grasses between the holes. We played the yellow (senior) tees which were on many holes further back than normal. With it being a windy day, it made several holes play extremely long.
My only concerns were the pace of play was really bad. On hole 17 (our 8th hole), there were 3 groups on that hole. The tee box on hole 4 is like a pitcher's mound. The 7th green had blackish footprints on the green. Maybe someone walked into the burnted areas before walking on the green. It just looked unsightly - the greens was fine.
They need to emphasize to fill in your divots more. The course needs to have these divots filled by players and/or develop a plan to fill these in the off-season.
nice and green winter round
MY FAVORITE course in the area, but I was amazed at how tore up some of the tee boxes were since i hadn't played here in a while...no sand to fill divots. C'mon guys, help us to help you take care of your course.
