Overpriced dirt track
The greens fees were way overpriced for this course. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were dried out and brown. A significant portion of the course was simply dirt. No grass, just dirt patches. The course website advertises as ocean front, but only one hole had an ocean view.
To top it off, the club rental was $70.
I spent over $250 to play a poorly maintained golf course.
I complained to the pro shop staff representative and his response was:
“You’re preaching to the choir, I won’t play here.”
I asked him for a refund, but was denied.
Overall a very poor experience.
Overall Solid
Review as of 10/17
Really enjoyed this course and found it to be a decently challenging layout with the wind playing a large factor on each hole. Greens weren't perfect but they rolled true and decently quick. Fairways were better on some holes than others and don’t be surprised if you end up in some dirt in the rough. If youre coming to hawaii looking for country club level lush and perfection youre better off forking up the $200+ for a higher end course. If you just want a casual round with some pretty solid views and don’t want to break the bank I highly recommend. I think the standard non-resident rate of $100+ is overpriced. I was able to get a hot deal for around $60 and I think that was good value as far as hawaii goes. You wont find a full length course at much cheaper.
Better Options Elsewhere
Played Hawaii Kai Golf course today for the first time. And here is a quick review…
Course Conditions ( fairways + greens ) fair at best. Very dry fairways and not a single decent green out there.
Course Layout is actually quite interesting with a few quirky holes. Very gettable for all level Golfer’s.
Views are nice but not spectacular. Staff is extremely welcoming and friendly.
All in all not the worst experience but really nothing to write home about.
Nice layout, but…..
Hawaii Kai is a nice layout. The greens were in okay condition, and soft, as were the tees. However, the traps were hard with very little sand, and I would compare the fairways and rough to a cow pasture—very brown with plenty of bare spots. There didn’t seem to be any effort on the staff’s part to fill foursomes. There were plenty of twosomes and singles, which slowed down the pace of play. There were no Marshall’s to help speed the pace of play, nor was there a refreshment cart to help quench your thirst. The rental clubs were pretty decent—Callaway Epic woods, and Callaway irons with Mac Daddy wedges. I wouldn’t come back.
Best asset...the employees
The greens were in great shape. Very dry fairways, but not really a problem. Fair course for all levels. Impressed with the helpfulness and friendliness of the entire staff there.
Kai public course
This course is a rip off. I had made a tee time thru Golfnow. They wanted to charge me $70 for a rental set of golf clubs or take their deal to purchase a package for 18 holes even though I wanted play 9 holes. I think golfnow should not sell tee times to this course.
great staff poor course conditions
Played here for the first time on 1-25-21. Staff were friendly and helpful. Very dissapointed in the course conditions. For this golf course to charge $120.00 for a round of golf is non sensical. Fairways were awful and putting surfaces were at best fair. On almost every shot you had to bump into a preferred lie as playing conditions were a far cry from a championship course as advertised. This course has potential but it is obvious a lack of course maintenance has rendered a promising course to the level of a poorly maintained muni. The lack of revenue due to covid 19 has likely hurt this course upkeep as there was not many players on the the day I played.
9 holes in 4 hours $50.00
Horrible experience, the T times were over booked and the starter just kept taking the money and sending golfers out with every hole having two or more groups backed up on every hole we barley got in 9 holes of golf it was just pathetic
Nice Course
Enjoyed a nice round at Hawaii Kai. Staff was friendly, they do a great job at managing Covid rules. Pace of play was OK for a Sunday. Course was in good condition.
Dog Tracks
Lots of dead grass. Nearly all fairways have huge areas of exposed dirt and weeds.

I've lived in Hawaii Kai my whole life and I'm so embarrassed that my home course has been run into the ground. They back logged tee times so it was the first time I teed off 15 minutes after my scheduled tee time. We played 12 holes in 3 hours and 40 minutes before they pulled the flags. The course is in terrible shape, no real grass, just awful. I wish I could golf 10 minutes from my house but I have to bite the bullet and say I'm never coming here again. Just about any course on Oahu is a better deal including the muni's. Plus the people working there and the Marshall have real bad attitudes. Avoid this place.
Ugly Fairways
This course was in very poor shape. Greens were ok ,but fairways and bunkers SUBSTANDARD!!. Staff was great. There is NOWAY this course is worth $120 on a Hot Deal,! It is somewhat scenic, but that didn’t offset the conditions! Rental clubs were good but still pricey! Cost over 200 to play with a bucket of balls. Not worth it. No cart girl and no halfway snack bar. Overall save your money! Play Hawai’i Prince much nicer conditions good rentals 2 sleeves of balls GPS in carts.$150 TaylorMade M5s!, DO NOT RECOMMENDED!!
