Makalei Golf Club
About
Malakei Golf Club wanders through a colorful landscape of indigenous flora and fauna, providing a home to a variety of wildlife including peacocks, pheasants, and wild turkey. Situated in the Kona region of Hawaii, which is widely renowned for its coffee farms, the course offers dramatic elevation changes that range from 1,800 to 2,850 feet. The golf course plays through lush forests accented with lava tubes, cinder cones, and an ancient stone wall that dates back over a century. The fast bentgrass greens, rolling fairways, and cooler climate are reminiscent of a course in northern California but the stunning panoramic views will definitely remind you that you are in Hawaii. Malakei Golf Club's 15h hole is a signature hole thanks to its memorable scenery. It not only offers an incredible view of Maui's 10,000-foot Mount Haleakala, it is also your best chance for a hole in one.

Beautiful approach on Par 5 Photo submitted by Pete1444216 on 11/10/2012
Conditions tough
Disappointed in the conditions of the coarse,
I have played here many times in the past and enjoyed. The fairways have not been trimmed, tall wild grasss ,clover, weeds in traps etc. No club house as of now not sure if there will be one built.
Sad to see this.
Such Unexpected Surprise & Amazing Course
From the first glance, there were the temporary trailers on the lot instead a physical building as a pro shop while a few chickens were running around. The course was not starting off so positive. Then the long drive through the woods to the driving range and first tee box. But this was an amazing and challenging golf course with beautiful views and unexpected wild life populated the course. I wish I had planned better to play the full 18 holes. With the hills and long drives between holes, this amazing course would be a hard course to walk, but I would love to try.
Bad decision!
The rough was so thick you needed everyone’s help to locate your ball. We found over 15 balls in the rough. The fairways were not all mowed and no yardage markers. The greens were supper slow. The best thing about this course was the wild peacocks.
Incredible
This course is visually stunning. Not your typical ocean course of Hawaii at all though. It’s on the side of the mountain and has about 1500 ft of elevation change from lowest to highest. Fantastic layout that challenges you but is wide and playable in a lot of areas. An absolute must play if you are on the big island.
Challenging course with elevations from 800 feet to 3000 feet.
As long as you remember there is no clubhouse, no beverage cart and no food at the course other than snack foods, it is a good value for the money. No Marshall or starter so patience is key as the golfers in front of you or playing with you will routinely play two balls.
Round took 4 hrs and 15 minutes.
Great layout and wildlife galore
This course keeps bringing me back. Exceptional layout. Very difficult. If tee shots are not precise expect double or worse.
Condition is fair at best in the fairways and roughs. Greens are great, but like most courses people don't fix ball marks. I will go back several times in the coming weeks.
Not sure if I would play again
This course may be of adequate value for the money , but if you are expecting something better than a minimal municipal course on the mainland, you might better go elsewhere. The course seems to be minimally maintained, and hanging on by a thread financially. I am not a golf elitist, but the course conditions really are not acceptable to many golfers. However, it does have an interesting course layout with everything from turkeys to flamingo wondering about the course.
Fun and challenging course
Course was maintained well. It was challenging with all the dips and hills. We hit some rain then sunshine and the price to play 18 holes was great!
Makelei Magic
Quick and easy check in, we’ll organized cart/club manager, polite and friendly starter. What a crazy course with the long distance to 1st tee and between holes. But it is well worth it. Very fun layout with great variety of 3,4,5 par holes; reasonable elevation changes; and gentle dog legs. Could use a little more sand in the traps. Lots of ball marks so it would be good to seller give away repair tools. Or at least remind people. Grooming was excellent on green, fairway and rough. Tee boxes need a little work. Had a great time!
Amazing layout
Enjoyed the challenge. Mountain course with eighteen very unique holes carved out of the jungle. Greens were tricky but a few of them were a bit weedy on the back nine. Worth visiting.
poor course amenities
the bthrooms at the shop were out of order and the out houses on the course were no better than the the broken rooms at the bottom. not woman friendly. a great place for bird watching
Great Value
Fun course with a great layout. Needs some tlc. Greens on the front were redone and nice. The green on the back needed some work. Fun hitting up and down a mountain. Really nice layout. Bonus is a unch of peacocks have made the course their home. They greet you at several tee boxes.
Fun course…
Fun course. Rarely a flat lie! Greens were in excellent condition. Enjoyed seeing the peacocks again. One of the better courses for the money. We play it every time we come to the Big Island.
Love this course
I play it every time I come to Big Island. The course is beautiful greens are nice. Worth the drive up the hill
Very hilly
This is a tough course that will humble you. Every hole is either straight up or straight down.
Very challenging course. Need to be part Billy goat
This course is high up and requires a lot of of driving up and downhill. There is 3000 feet of elevation gain as you play most fairways slope down up , left or right so you never have a flat lie. The greens are in decent shape better than most types. We’ve tried to play. Not much difference between fairway and rough and if you go off the roof, you are in jungle. This course is made to lose balls. Wild pigs have dug up many areas but fortunately not the greens. We played in the dry season so it was nice and cool with some cloud cover, which was very comfortable.
Most unique
Everyone should do this once for the experience. Major ups and downs and sideway lies. Greens were in pretty poor shape. Lots of peacocks and other birds. The pigs ruts are everywhere but not in fairways or greens. Great views. Be prepared for a little rain.
