Makalei Golf Club
About
Malakei Golf Club wanders through a colorful landscape of indigenous flora and fauna, providing a home to a variety of wildlife including peacocks, pheasants, and wild turkey. Situated in the Kona region of Hawaii, which is widely renowned for its coffee farms, the course offers dramatic elevation changes that range from 1,800 to 2,850 feet. The golf course plays through lush forests accented with lava tubes, cinder cones, and an ancient stone wall that dates back over a century. The fast bentgrass greens, rolling fairways, and cooler climate are reminiscent of a course in northern California but the stunning panoramic views will definitely remind you that you are in Hawaii. Malakei Golf Club's 15h hole is a signature hole thanks to its memorable scenery. It not only offers an incredible view of Maui's 10,000-foot Mount Haleakala, it is also your best chance for a hole in one.

Beautiful approach on Par 5 Photo submitted by Pete1444216 on 11/10/2012
Go somewhere else
This course is absolutely terrible from start to finish and it has nothing to do with the layout or any of the golf holes. The management is completely inept at another other than making excuses. If this is your career path running a place like this it is time to take a long hard look in the mirror. YOU ARE UNABLE TO RUN A GOLF COURSE AND ITS TIME TO SHUT THIS TRASH HOLE DOWN. If a course offers a restaraunt and bar, a driving range and 18 holes and the only thing actually available is 18 holes then more then 75% of your amenities are closed. THINK ABOUT IT. WHY ARE YOU OPEN?????
Makalei
This course needs to put some $$ into improving the overall course conditions. Most of the tee boxes are uneven and rutty. Bunkers don’t have sand in them. They are doing work on the fringes currently. The greens are in real good shape. This can be a really good course with those improvements. It’s a very challenging but fair layout.
An experience
Interesting course in a higher elevation that was a challenge.
Beautiful, challenging course
Love this course.... third time played it and getting to know the nuances of where trouble lurks from the back tees. I love the fact that it challenges your ability to shape shots off frequent up- and down- and side-slope lies... it has made me a better golfer. The views and bird life are spectacular, and the staff very friendly. Diversfy your game from the flat Kona coast resort courses while you pay half as much for a memorable round, even if your score suffers!
My have been nice once upon a time.
Looks like this was once a good course. Really disappointed. The entire course was over run by weeds.. sand traps filled with weeds, there really were not any sand traps. To bad, whoever is responsible for the course doesn’t do more for it.
Maybe they should just let it go wild and become a bird sanctuary.
Hilliest course ever! (if that's a word)
This is the hilliest (if that's a word) course I've ever played. That isn't bad necessarily, especially cuz you're on the Big Island, it's a good value, and the views are really spectacular on some holes. We played with a really, really nice local guy. The hills affect some drives which made the first time playing the course a bit challenging. Take extra balls, you'll probably need them. But it was a lot of fun and a great value. Just be mentally prepared for the hills, because this entire upcountry course is built on the side of the mountain.... or volcano.
Pretty layout but course needs work
The course has some very pretty holes but there was a large amount of bunkers that was in very bad shape and way too much ground under repair not marked.
Fun course
Great challenging course with nice layout. They had just reopened after the storm and the downed trees were incredible. Very destructing. But course was fun and had a good time. It’s higher up so not as warm. Lots of peacocks and chickens
Great greens but
Fairways , tee boxes and bumpers a mess .
Love layout , greens good . Golf carts on last legs
Great round
Good time out with two buddies shot best round for year
Do not trust the online pictures!!!!
This course looks nothing like the pictures shown. Only green grass is on the greens which were pretty good. Fairways and tee boxes all brown covered with weeds. Bunkers don't exist, either overgrown or just gravel.
Potential but that will take years. Don’t trust the picture on golf now as this is at least 10 years old.
This might be the worst golf money I have ever spent.
Negatives:
The only sign of green grass on a fairway or tee box were weeds and some were knee high.
All bunkers were either GUR, overgrown, mud, or gravel.
No way to know where to hit your tee shot as the “rough” and “fairway” are both just brown hard pan, dirt and weeds.
Cart went twice as fast down the steep hills as a normal cart and appeared to be 20 years old, no padding, & blood all over the sanitized seat.
Positives:
Greens were actually pretty good.
Layout is pretty good
Cart paths are excellent
Beautiful trees
Drives go 300-400 yards as the “fairways’ are rock hard with no grass. Who knows where it might end up.
