Makalei Golf Club
About
Malakei Golf Club wanders through a colorful landscape of indigenous flora and fauna, providing a home to a variety of wildlife including peacocks, pheasants, and wild turkey. Situated in the Kona region of Hawaii, which is widely renowned for its coffee farms, the course offers dramatic elevation changes that range from 1,800 to 2,850 feet. The golf course plays through lush forests accented with lava tubes, cinder cones, and an ancient stone wall that dates back over a century. The fast bentgrass greens, rolling fairways, and cooler climate are reminiscent of a course in northern California but the stunning panoramic views will definitely remind you that you are in Hawaii. Malakei Golf Club's 15h hole is a signature hole thanks to its memorable scenery. It not only offers an incredible view of Maui's 10,000-foot Mount Haleakala, it is also your best chance for a hole in one.

Beautiful approach on Par 5 Photo submitted by Pete1444216 on 11/10/2012
Nice Course on the Big Island
I really enjoyed playing here - It’s a very scenic setting up on the mountain with wonderful views of the ocean far below. The staff was super friendly. Thanks to the hot deal I feel it was definitely worth the money. I hope to play again sometime.
Great course
Was awesome beautiful green course. Greens were a little slow because they have a broken roller other than that it was phenomenal
Fun mountain course
A great experience. First time playing a mountain course and the incline and decline of the holes was very interesting. Some holes had a distant ocean view.
The large amount of peacocks and other wildlife was an added attraction. Very beautiful.
The staff there was super friendly and helpful. Quick time to check in and get your cart. The cart trip to driving range/1st hole is about a 10 minute ride. The driving range faces the ocean and is sloped downhill.
The only reason I didn’t rate a star higher is that the golf carts are very much in need of replacement. However, it was posted in the pro shop that new ones are on order. I’ll play this course again.
I’ve always enjoyed playing here, don’t hit any ball off a direct line, to the green, fringes are extra long and OB areas are a jungle. YOU WILL LOSE BALLS HERE. Views are breathtaking and air much cooler than the lower coastal courses.
Makaylei golf course
Fun course. In the mountains so much cooler than Hilo. Greens were in good shape. Some fairways a little spotty but overall a nice somewhat challenging course. Will play it again
Peacocks are beautiful!
Had fun playing this course. Greens are soft so didn’t get a lot of role. But we really loved the layout and seeing the animals..
Peacocks are awesome
Back on the mainland, it would be considered a "goat ranch". I play a "Muni" that is in better condition.
The rental clubs are very used, grips need replacing, no towel to clean the clubs, just out of sorts.
Much less expensive than other clubs on the island.
Locals Only
Visiting the Island....stay away. Locals only. Well that is how I felt at the end of the day. Paying almost $70 more than a local person I kind of get but based on the day it wasn't worth it. Wife and I played on 6/20. The course wasn't that full but the process to get on the course was timely. Carts need to be replaced as they barely manage the terrain, felt like I was riding a go cart. Maintained well, lots of green grass and really is a beautiful course. Pace of play was slow...and I mean really slow. We were waiting at every hole and so was the group ahead of us. Asked to play through and the person looked at me with rage. "We don't do that here" was the response, score card indicated differently.
Wife and I played 4 courses in 7 days. This was the worst of the 4 and my only negative experience.
Friendly staff! Easy walk from Hapuna resort.
Played in about 3 hours. Bunches of wild goats on the course. Fun time. Extremely friendly staff. Distant, panoramic ocean views from many holes. I’d been expecting the course to have at least a couple holes nearer the water at least so was disappointed. Generous resort style fairways. Fast greens.
Lovely Makalei
We had a great time. Friendly staff, Beautiful setting. This course is on a mountain side. Fun and Interesting layout, like no other course I've played. Must take a cart, no way to walk it. Wide fairways, but dense forest if OB. Greens are in great shape. Peacocks! Looking forward to playing here again.
Jungles & peacocks!
If you are looking for dazzling ocean holes, immaculate fairways, a stunning clubhouse, and an upscale resort ambiance...look elsewhere. But if you want a challenging round on a course without a single square foot of level ground, where peacocks roam freely on most holes, where cart paths meander almost aimlessly through lush rainforest, and Hawaii's only bent grass greens are finally recovering from too much neglect, then consider giving Makalei a try. Sure, the ancient gas carts are on their last legs, the "temporary" structures at the clubhouse look like they're a few decades beyond their expected lifespan, and the long hike up the mountain from the clubhouse to the first tee makes you wonder if it will be worth it IF you make it there, but once you begin to play I think you'll find, as I did, that Makalei offers an unique, memorable, and quite fun experience if you temper your expectations a bit. You're not going to be at Mauna Lani or Mauna Kea, but then again you're not going to pay $200+. You're not going to have crashing waves or ocean carries, but you will have over 1000 feet in elevation change to deal with. You're not going to feel coddled or pampered, but you will feel welcomed and challenged. Yes, the fairways are spotty, the rough is patchy, and some of the bunkers are unplayable; and you will likely participate in the "ball exchange program" (losing balls in the ever-present jungle lining each hole, but finding someone else's occasionally instead); but good shots will be rewarded, poor ones will be punished, and you will find, I think, at the end of your round that the course provides a fun and fair test of golf. My wife and I played on a somewhat rainy Mothers Day afternoon, and while the round was "holiday slow", the other golfers we encountered were uniformly friendly, happy to be there, and completely willing to usher us on ahead if we wanted (even though there was no where to go). So, if you want something different (know another course with dozens of peacocks and 600 yard par fives?) and don't mind less than perfect conditions, I recommend trying Makalei.
excellent
lots of vegetation and loads of birds of all kinds and a few pigs. Natural beauty at it's best
Jurassic Park golf
If you want a cart path that's like a Disney jungle ride, and surroundings to match, this course is for you. You'll never play another like it, surrounded by dense foilage and dodging screaming peacocks and francolins while other unseen birds cry out from the trees and ferns around you.
