Malakei Golf Club wanders through a colorful landscape of indigenous flora and fauna, providing a home to a variety of wildlife including peacocks, pheasants, and wild turkey. Situated in the Kona region of Hawaii, which is widely renowned for its coffee farms, the course offers dramatic elevation changes that range from 1,800 to 2,850 feet. The golf course plays through lush forests accented with lava tubes, cinder cones, and an ancient stone wall that dates back over a century. The fast bentgrass greens, rolling fairways, and cooler climate are reminiscent of a course in northern California but the stunning panoramic views will definitely remind you that you are in Hawaii. Malakei Golf Club's 15h hole is a signature hole thanks to its memorable scenery. It not only offers an incredible view of Maui's 10,000-foot Mount Haleakala, it is also your best chance for a hole in one.

Weather was the issue. When you go, check the weather, it rained hard and I was in the clouds so couldn't see the fairways or the greens. Would love to play this course in the sunshine!

Makalei 3/21

Weather was great so we chose the opportunity to play this course. It’s going through a remodel so things are somewhat crazy. The course it self is extremely challenging and the terrain will beat you up. Was not a fan of the current layout. When you finished on 18 you then traveled past 2-3 holes to get back to the parking area which meant you were passing others playing those holes. The value of the “hot deal” made it worth trying, would never pay there normal rate to play again. Wife loved the peacocks!!🦚

Great value for vacationing golfers

I played this course for less than $100 dollars (with cart and club rental!). Fantastic mountainside views of ocean from 3,000 feet and a lush tropical setting. Most holes up or downhill with lots of side hill lies, but generous landing areas and fair. Bent-grass greens were hard to read but good and true. No amenities yet, but building new clubhouse. PEACOCKS! (beware wild pig fairway damage-drop GUC)

Course in better shape than previous 5 years. Still a lot of hog damage. It would be nice if the golfers repaired their ball marks on the greens.

Incredible value

I played this course with club rental for well under $100. Elevation changes of 1000' plus bottom to top, but up and down most holes were wide enough. (Jungle=Gone). Bent grass greens were hard to read, but smooth and fast. The Views were great and PEACOCKS! FUN and fast.

Makalei - great time

The course is working to build its new club house so the golf shop and bathrooms are operating out of large mobile trailers. Staff is very friendly and the starter was great about providing key information about the course and how to play particularly holes. The course was a very good condition and surrounding forest that fronts most every fairway is lush and impenetrable (lost balls) if you hit errant shots. There's a significant amount of terrain elevation change between teeing areas to greens on most holes.

Overall great value and very fun course.

A golf adventure through the Hawaiian vegetation

A fun round in the mountainous terrain. Challenging slopes, rock walls and peacocks make this course stand out. Tough to maintain a good score but, very entertaining and demanding imagination and creativity.
